How we handle canopy cleaning in The Warren
Duct Doctor has cleaned canopies and hoods since 2009. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers plenum chambers, island canopies and canopy light fittings, and the jobs we see most are a hood coated in old grease and grease filters blocking between washes.
In a smaller place like The Warren, many kitchens sit in older buildings or later extensions, with the duct running through a roof space or up an outside wall. Flat runs collect grease and need proper access to clean.
We are CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we are fully insured. We’re also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we have been trading since 2009.

What canopy cleaning looks like in The Warren
The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 15 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 12 sandwich bars and takeaways across The Warren and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Wherever there’s a canopy over the cooking, its hood and plenum collect grease with every service. The Warren sits within the area of Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises. Food hygiene inspections in The Warren are the job of Bracknell Forest council’s environmental health team. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after.
Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Heatherwood Hospital is the nearest hospital to The Warren, about 1.6 miles east. Bursars and site managers at schools such as Harmans Water Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.
The Warren is about 1 mile east of Bracknell, in Bracknell Forest. We provide canopy cleaning for businesses, landlords and public buildings in The Warren and the rest of Bracknell Forest. Around The Warren
We work in commercial kitchens and buildings around LVS Ascot and Ranelagh School and the streets around them. There’s a railway station in The Warren itself: Martins Heron station. A little further out are Heatherwood Hospital (1.6 miles east) and The Lexicon (1.5 miles north-west). Green spaces nearby include Heath Lake and Wildmoor Heath.
Keeping the system healthy
Once we have finished, these simple steps help:
- Avoid harsh scourers that scratch the canopy
- Refit filters the right way round and fully seated
- Check and empty canopy gutters regularly
- Never run the range with a filter out
File the report alongside your fire risk assessment, so it’s ready when an EHO, insurer or fire officer asks. Before and after pictures speak for themselves.
Don’t let canopy gutters fill to the brim. Most canopy drips start with a full trough, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.
What happens on the day
Your trading hours come first. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that’s an evening, overnight or a weekend. Once we’re in, the area is sheeted and anything that has to be off is turned off and cooled, and the work takes a few hours for most canopies. Tell us about any gates, ladders or locked plant areas at your site near The Warren when you book.
- The canopy is checked from photos or on a visit.
- Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
- We lift out the filters and scrape the plenum and housing.
- The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
- We put the filters back, tidy up and photograph the finished canopy.

Advice
The Warren questions
Which environmental health team covers The Warren?
Food hygiene inspections in The Warren are carried out by Bracknell Forest council. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.
Do you work at weekends in The Warren?
Yes, evening, overnight and weekend work is normal for us. The work in The Warren can fit around your hours. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote.
How long will it take to clean the canopy?
It takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. Your quote will give a time.
Do you clean inside the canopy as well as outside?
The full canopy, inside and out, and the plenum behind it. Grease troughs and filter channels are emptied and degreased as part of the job.
Which accreditations do you hold?
Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.
Do you offer maintenance contracts?
Yes, of course. Tell us what you have and how it’s used and we’ll propose a schedule with a fixed quote.
Who has the legal duty for fire safety?
In the words of the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person. That is generally the employer or the person in control of the premises, and in shared buildings more than one person can have duties. Your lease and fire risk assessment should make it clear.
Do you cover The Warren?
Yes. Our area takes in London and the counties of South East England, The Warren included.
What a clean won’t put right
Some problems need a different service or another trade:
- Bent or broken filters
- Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor
- A light fitting that doesn’t work
If you’re not sure, just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer before booking.
What the work covers
- Grease gutters
- Wall canopies
- Baffle filters
- Plenum chambers
- Island canopies
- Canopy light fittings
What we’re called out for in The Warren
Grease doesn’t build up any differently in The Warren: it comes down to how long the kitchen cooks and what’s on the menu. Frying and grilling load a canopy far faster than steaming or boiling.
What we are most often called out for:
- Filters that clog soon after cleaning
- Drips from the canopy onto the range
- Smoke hanging around the canopy during service
- A canopy flagged at an environmental health inspection
Volunteers running a hall kitchen near St Paul, or anywhere in The Warren, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.
Questions to ask before you book
- What’s included in the scope, part by part
- Whether a survey comes first
- Whether the figure could change on the day
- What happens if part of the system can’t be accessed
Multi-site and managed buildings
Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Each visit produces a dated report with pictures, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.
The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.
Why it’s worth doing now in The Warren
When grease clogs the filters and plenum, the canopy can’t draw air as it should. Smoke and heat hang around the cooking line while the fan strains. A clean canopy and plenum let the extract do its job. Around The Warren, a kitchen or building out of action is missed straight away.
We don’t list prices on the website, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. For a fixed quote, call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email, and we will talk you through it.

What the work involves, part by part
School and staff canteen kitchens
Canteens and school kitchens tend to run to a timetable, which makes a canopy clean easy to schedule. We often clean them in holidays or at weekends.
Island canopies
Island canopies often have filters on two sides. We work round the canopy, cleaning each filter bank and plenum.
