Kent · Canopy and hood cleaning
Tenterden canopy cleaning
Professional canopy cleaning in and around Tenterden, timed so the site keeps working and finished with a written report and photos.
- Filters that clog soon after cleaning
- An EHO comment about the canopy
- Fat running down the front of the hood
What the work involves, part by part
Grease troughs and gutters
Grease channels around the canopy collect what runs down the inside. We empty and degrease them, so they can do their job again.
Wall canopies
The back of a wall canopy is hard to reach and easy to miss. We remove the filters to reach it and degrease it properly.
How we handle canopy cleaning in Tenterden
A kitchen team can wipe the outside of a canopy, but the seams, gutters and inner skin need more. Thick deposits are scraped off by hand, then the surfaces degreased to suit what’s there, using hot water or steam where it helps. The work covers canopy light fittings, island canopies and wall canopies, and people most often call us about grease dripping from the canopy edge and a plenum thick with grease behind the filters.
Around a smaller place like Tenterden, kitchen extracts tend to belong to pubs, cafés, takeaways and school or care home kitchens. Quieter kitchens still collect grease in the duct, just more slowly, so cleaning is planned around how much it cooks and what the readings show.
Each visit ends with a written report and photos, so you have a record of what was done and when. Where the work is a TR19® Grease clean, the certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

When it’s something else
We’d rather tell you now than book work that will not help, so here are the limits:
- A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that’s a design question)
- A fan that can’t pull enough air because it’s worn out
- Ductwork and fans beyond the canopy (those need a full TR19 clean)
Not sure which it is? You can ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll tell you honestly.

Aftercare tips
So the system stays in good health:
- Wash or exchange the filters on a regular cycle
- Empty the grease troughs before they fill
- Refit filters the right way round and fully seated
- Clean the hood’s outer surfaces daily
A full system clean comes with a TR19 certificate from the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. Where only the canopy is done, the report says so clearly.
A daily wipe of the hood keeps fresh grease from baking on. It will not replace a professional clean, but it slows the build-up you can see.
Do you need canopy cleaning in Tenterden?
Grease doesn’t build up any differently in Tenterden: it comes down to how long the kitchen cooks and what’s on the menu. Frying and grilling load a canopy far faster than steaming or boiling.
These are the problems we see most often:
- Fat running down the front of the hood
- A canopy flagged at an environmental health inspection
- Grease filters blocking between washes
- Greasy streaks across the canopy
Bursars and site managers at schools such as Tenterden Infant School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.

What canopy cleaning looks like in Tenterden
Food Standards Agency data counts about 23 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 5 takeaways within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Tenterden. Any of those kitchens with a canopy has a hood that needs cleaning inside and out. In Tenterden, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Ashford council. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready. Tenterden is covered by Kent Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel.
If your kitchen is in a listed or historic building, like the houses around Tenterden (Smallhythe Place is about 2.2 miles south), fitting access panels needs care. A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near Parish Church of St Mildred or elsewhere in Tenterden, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.

Tenterden: your questions answered
Who inspects food businesses in Tenterden?
Food hygiene inspections in Tenterden are carried out by Ashford council. How often a business is inspected depends on the risk rating the council gives it, so it’s worth staying ready all year.
Can you get to a site in Tenterden?
Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Tenterden included. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.
Where does the waste go?
We contain it and take it with us. We collect grease, debris and waste water as we go, so it doesn’t spread.
Who is responsible for fire safety on the premises?
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, it’s the responsible person: often the employer, owner or occupier. Landlords, facilities managers and managing agents can also hold responsibility.
Are you insured?
Yes. Duct Doctor is fully insured, and the details are available on request.
Do we need to close while you work?
Usually not. Booking the work out of hours means the site can carry on as normal. Bigger sites can be done in stages so parts stay in use.
How long is a canopy clean?
Size and build-up decide it. Typically it takes a few hours for most canopies.
What accreditations do you have?
BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. We have been trading since 2009 and we’re fully insured.
What we do, step by step
The first job on site is protection: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. Then we make the system safe and start. It takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. We plan the journey to Tenterden and bring what the job is likely to need.
- We look at the canopy first, from photos or on a visit.
- The range is turned off and allowed to cool before we cover it.
- We remove the grease filters and clean the plenum and filter housing.
- We degrease the canopy shell, its seams and the grease troughs.
- We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.
How to prepare
- Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
- Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
- Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
How to get a quote
We don’t publish a price list, because every site is different. Instead, we look at your site first, from pictures or a survey, and then send you a fixed quote. To get going, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.
Advice
What affects the quote in Tenterden
The price is fixed before any work begins. It takes into account:
- Any permits to work or inductions
- When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
- The scale of the work
- The condition of the system
Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Problems in a system tend to grow, which can make the next visit longer. If you’re unsure, ring 0345 646 2711 or email us for straight advice and a fixed quote.
What to send for a quote
Photos let us diagnose from a distance. The most useful are:
- The postcode and the type of business
- Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
- The times we could work without disrupting the site
- Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
Want a quote for canopy cleaning? Please ring 0345 646 2711, or send details by email with a few details about the site. We’ll explain what we’d do and send a fixed quote before you commit to anything.
What happens if it’s left?
A greasy canopy is fuel directly above the flame. A flare-up can catch it and be drawn into the plenum and duct, where a fire is much harder to stop. Cleaning it removes that fuel. In a smaller place like Tenterden, a site that has to close is felt quickly.
Combining work into one visit or one programme often makes better use of the time. Mention every system or site you need covered, and you will get one fixed quote.
