Bearsted canopy cleaning
Canopy cleaning across Bearsted and nearby, timed so the site keeps working and finished with a written report and photos.
- Condensation and grease dripping together
- Canopy gutters full of old fat
- A greasy hood noticed by an inspector
Common problems we fix in Bearsted
Grease doesn’t build up any differently in Bearsted: it comes down to how long the kitchen cooks and what’s on the menu. High-heat cooking coats it fastest.
What we are most often called out for:
- Greasy streaks across the canopy
- Smoke hanging around the canopy during service
- Condensation running down the canopy
- Grease filters blocking between washes
School kitchens, at schools like Thurnham Church of England Infant School for example, are usually cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.

How we handle canopy cleaning in Bearsted
For canopies and hoods in Bearsted, the work follows the same careful routine: we remove the filters, clean the plenum and housing, then degrease the canopy shell. You get pictures of the canopy before and after. If you’re dealing with fat running down the front of the hood and heavy deposits behind the grease filters, we can put it right, from canopy light fittings, grease gutters and plenum chambers onwards.
Around a smaller place like Bearsted, kitchen extracts tend to belong to pubs, cafés, takeaways and school or care home kitchens. A kitchen that cooks fewer hours still builds up grease, so the interval is set by hours of use and grease readings.
We’re CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we’re fully insured. On top of that, we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

Why it’s worth doing now in Bearsted
A greasy canopy is fuel directly above the flame. Flames from the range can ignite it and be pulled further into the system, where a fire is much harder to stop. A clean canopy takes that fuel away. It’s easy to lose track of when the work was last done on a quieter site.
Every site is different, so we price each one individually. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all make a difference.

What we do, step by step
We work around your opening hours, not the other way round. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that’s an evening, overnight or a weekend. Once we’re in, the area is sheeted and anything that has to be off is turned off and cooled, and the job takes a few hours for most canopies. We plan the journey to Bearsted and bring what the job is likely to need.
- We look at the canopy first, from pictures or on a visit.
- Cooking equipment is left to cool and the area under the canopy protected.
- Filters come out and the plenum behind them is scraped and degreased.
- Inside and out, the canopy and its grease channels are degreased.
- We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.
Before we arrive
- Move anything stored near the system
- Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
- Arrange a key holder or contact on site

Questions from Bearsted
Can the work in Bearsted be done at night or at weekends?
Yes, out-of-hours work is a big part of what we do. It means the site in Bearsted keeps running as normal. Let us know the hours you’re closed and we will book within them.
Do you do school kitchen extract cleaning in Bearsted in the summer holidays?
Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. Food Standards Agency records list about 15 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of Bearsted. Tell us your holiday dates and we will book the visit for when the site is empty.
What does TR19 mean?
It’s the industry benchmark for cleaning ventilation and kitchen extract systems, written by BESA. It covers how systems are inspected, cleaned and checked, and it takes a risk-based approach.
What about areas you can’t get to?
The report shows them clearly. Often the fix is extra access, such as new panels in ductwork, which we can install.
How much notice should we give?
For planned work, earlier is better, particularly if your next visit is nearly due. For emergencies, we take calls 24/7.
How long does canopy cleaning take?
One lightly soiled hood doesn’t take long, while long canopies, several hoods or heavy deposits take more time. We’ll tell you what to expect.
Are you accredited?
BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. We’re fully insured and have been trading since 2009.
Who is the responsible person?
In the words of the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person. That’s generally the employer or the person in control of the premises, and where several people have control, each can have duties. If you’re not sure, check your lease and fire risk assessment.
Aftercare tips
Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it helps at the next visit:
- Check filters aren’t leaving gaps
- Leave the extract running until cooking stops
- Clean the baffle filters often
- Empty the grease troughs before they fill
We recommend when the canopy, or the whole system, should next be cleaned. That date is based on your cooking hours and what we found, in line with BESA guidance.
A change in how the canopy behaves is worth reporting. It can mean the cooking has changed or the interval is too long, which a grease thickness test can confirm.
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
Keep a record of what your team does. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, alongside our reports.
Some jobs should never be done in-house: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. That’s our job.
Managing agents and facilities teams in Bearsted
Facilities teams in offices, schools and healthcare sites book us too across Kent. Work can be phased by floor, building or site to keep disruption down.
For anyone managing more than one site, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Every building has its own written report, so records stay tidy.

The FSA’s data shows about 11 bars, pubs and nightclubs registered within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Bearsted. A pub or hotel kitchen that cooks every day builds up grease in its extract like any other. It’s Maidstone council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Bearsted. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Before-and-after photos from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand. The fire and rescue service for Bearsted is Kent Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel.

What a clean won’t put right
An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what this work cannot put right:
- Ductwork and fans beyond the canopy (those need a full TR19 clean)
- Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor
- A hood that does not cover the cooking line
Not sure which it is? You can give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will tell you honestly.
