Canopy cleaning near St Nicholas

Do you need canopy cleaning in St Nicholas?

Any canopy in St Nicholas that’s used for cooking will gather grease in the end. It’s fuel, sitting directly over the burners, which is why a flare-up near a dirty canopy is so dangerous.

Signs it’s time to call us include:

  • Grease channels that no longer drain
  • A canopy flagged at an environmental health inspection
  • Greasy streaks across the canopy
  • Heavy deposits behind the grease filters

A hospital like Lister Hospital, about 1.5 miles west, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.

About our canopy cleaning in St Nicholas

Duct Doctor has cleaned canopies and hoods since 2009. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’re fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. If you are dealing with heavy deposits behind the grease filters and poor capture at the hood, we can help, from wall canopies, island canopies and grease gutters onwards.

Around a smaller place like St Nicholas, kitchen extracts tend to belong to pubs, cafés, takeaways and school or care home kitchens. A kitchen that cooks fewer hours still builds up grease, so the interval is set by hours of use and grease readings.

The sign-off is always in writing: a written report, dated and illustrated with photos, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

St Nicholas questions

Do you work overnight in St Nicholas?

Yes, nights and weekends are routine for us. That way a site in St Nicholas does not have to lose a day’s trading. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote.

Do you cover smaller places like St Nicholas?

Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, St Nicholas included. The journey is planned ahead, so a few details about the route help.

How long does canopy cleaning take?

That depends on the size of the canopy and how much grease is on it. Typically it takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes, always. We diagnose before we treat: the survey shows what needs doing and what access we need and the fixed quote is built on it.

Can one contract cover all our sites?

Yes. Tell us the addresses and what each needs and you’ll get one fixed quote.

What paperwork do I get after a canopy clean?

You get a photo report with before and after photos. If the canopy is cleaned as part of a full TR19 clean, a TR19 certificate is issued too.

What kinds of canopies do you clean?

Most commercial kitchen canopies, from one small hood to a long run of canopies. We work out the approach when we survey, from photos or a visit.

What does canopy cleaning cost?

Every site is different, so each gets its own fixed quote. To get one, ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and tell us about the site and its opening hours.

What we do, step by step

The visit has three parts: getting the area ready, doing the work and signing it off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, and the sign-off is a written report with pictures. The middle part takes longest, and that takes a few hours for most canopies. Tell us when your site near St Nicholas is quiet and the visit will be booked for then.

  1. First the canopy is surveyed, by photos or in person.
  2. The range is turned off and allowed to cool before we cover it.
  3. We remove the grease filters and clean the plenum and filter housing.
  4. The canopy is cleaned inside and out, including troughs and seams.
  5. Clean filters are refitted and before and after pictures go into your report.

Before we arrive

  • Clear loose items from the work area
  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids

Aftercare tips

So the system stays in good health:

  • Never run the range with a filter out
  • Report new drips or smells from the canopy
  • Clean the baffle filters often
  • Wipe the canopy down at close every day

The kitchen is handed back clean, with the sheeting gone and the waste removed. Filters are back in place and seated properly, and the kitchen is ready to cook.

The best thing a kitchen can do for its canopy is keep the filters clean. Keep them on a regular cleaning or exchange cycle, and never cook with one missing. Less grease gets into the plenum as a result.

Canopy cleaning around St Nicholas

According to Food Standards Agency records, there are about 9 pubs and bars in and around St Nicholas, up to about a mile and a half out. Wherever they cook, the canopy, duct and fan collect grease just as a restaurant’s do. In St Nicholas, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Stevenage council. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. St Nicholas is covered by Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises.

Volunteers running a hall kitchen near All Saints Church, or anywhere in St Nicholas, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it. If your kitchen is in a listed or historic building, like the houses around St Nicholas (Aston Bury is about 3.3 miles south), fitting access panels needs care.

What canopy cleaning can’t fix

An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what this work cannot put right:

  • Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy
  • A hood that doesn’t cover the cooking line
  • A light fitting that doesn’t work

If in doubt, call 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we will say what we think.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Plenum chambers
  • Wall canopies
  • Grease gutters
  • Baffle filters
  • Island canopies
  • Canopy light fittings

Leave it or put it right?

For a kitchen in St Nicholas, a canopy that looks greasy can colour a whole inspection. Keeping it clean shows the rest of the kitchen is being looked after and keeping it that way is easier than catching up. When a site near St Nicholas shuts unexpectedly, the people who rely on it notice at once.

A single site or a whole portfolio, the quote is built the same way: the work involved, the access and the timing. You will have a fixed price before work begins.

What your team can do, and what needs us

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, which is where we come in.

When your team notices a problem between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We’ll take a look and send you a fixed quote.

What affects the cost of canopy cleaning

Your quote is based on your site. We consider:

  • Parking and loading at the site
  • A single visit or a regular plan
  • Site rules, permits and inductions
  • The number of sites or systems

No two sites are the same, so we price each one individually. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all play a part.

What to send for a quote

Many jobs can be priced from photos and some basics. Useful things to send:

  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
  • Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
  • Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow

Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in photos, get a survey first. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work starts.
