Canopy cleaning in Rooks Nest, done properly
Of the whole extract system, the canopy is the bit on show. It’s also the first place cooking vapour meets, so grease gathers on its inner skin, seams and gutters. Our canopy clean covers the shell inside and out, plus the plenum and the filter housing. Typical jobs include filters that never seem to stay clean and a canopy that no longer draws the smoke away, on island canopies, plenum chambers and wall canopies.
Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, where grease settles in the flat sections. We agree access and timings in advance.
Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

Looking after it afterwards
No system stays clean for ever, but care slows the build-up. A few tips:
- Avoid harsh scourers that scratch the canopy
- Run the extract the whole time you’re cooking
- Make sure filters sit tight in the housing
- Clean the baffle filters often
We point out anything we noticed while the canopy was apart: damaged filters, gaps around the housing or troughs that need emptying more often. We keep it to what matters.
Do not let canopy gutters fill to the brim. Overflowing troughs are the usual cause of drips onto the range, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.
Different parts, different methods
School and staff canteen kitchens
In a school or workplace canteen, the canopy is often the only part of the extract staff ever see. We clean it and the plenum behind the filters, so what’s out of sight is dealt with too.
Pub and hotel kitchens
Staff in pub and hotel kitchens work under the canopy all day, so drips and smells soon become a daily nuisance. A thorough clean puts that right.
What affects the cost of canopy cleaning
Every site gets its own quote. This is what makes a difference:
- Whether several sites go on one quote
- Parking and loading at the site
- The condition of the system
- Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Call for a fixed quote and we’ll explain each part.
Helping us quote
To speed up the quote, send us:
- The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
- The times we could work without disrupting the site
- Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
- The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
To help us quote: where the site is, what it is and its opening hours, a few pictures and any previous report or certificate. Once you have those, ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.
How it works
Each visit runs to the same pattern: protect the area, make the system safe, carry out the canopy cleaning, clear away and leave you the report. On site, the work takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. Pictures of the system and its access let us plan the work in Rooks Nest before we set off.
- We look at the canopy, filters and troughs first.
- Out of hours, the range is switched off, cooled and covered.
- With the filters removed, the plenum and filter channels are cleaned.
- Inside and out, the hood and its troughs are cleaned.
- We put the filters back, tidy up and photograph the finished canopy.
Getting ready for the visit
- Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
- Clear loose items from the work area
- Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids

When it’s something else
Not every problem is solved by canopy cleaning, and we’ll tell you before any work starts. It doesn’t solve:
- Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor
- Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy
- Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)
If you are not sure, just call us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we will give you a straight answer.
What the work covers

In-house cleaning or a specialist?
Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.
Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.

Rooks Nest sits within the area of Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel.
Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Church of Saint Nicholas, or anywhere in Rooks Nest, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it. That is Stevenage council, whose environmental health officers carry out food hygiene inspections in Rooks Nest. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.
What do you do to protect the area?
With sheeting and covers, before anything else happens. We keep the work contained and clean down when we finish.

How long will it take to clean the canopy?
That depends on the size of the canopy and how much grease is on it. As a guide, it takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several.
Do we lose a day’s trading?
Not normally. Visits are timed for when the area is closed, such as overnight or at a weekend, so the site can carry on as normal.
What do you do with what you remove?
Anything we remove is contained as we work and taken away with us, including grease, debris and dirty water. We do not leave it behind.
Multi-site and managed buildings
The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.
Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We cover South East England and London, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept to a regular schedule.
