Canopy cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Southend
Duct Doctor has cleaned canopies and hoods since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers island canopies, grease gutters and canopy light fittings, and people most often call us about condensation and grease dripping together and poor capture at the hood.
For a kitchen in or near Southend, the visit is planned around opening hours and the journey, and the clean covers the whole system, as it would anywhere: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.
Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured. On top of that, we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we have been trading since 2009.

What happens if it’s left?
A canopy clean in Southend now stops the grease spreading further. It takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several, out of hours so service carries on. Put off, the grease simply moves further into the system. It’s worth booking a check, because nobody sees inside a duct day to day.
One small site or a whole estate, we price it on the same basis: the work involved, the access and the timing. The price is fixed before any work starts.

When to call us in Southend
The canopy takes the hottest, wettest air in the kitchen. Fat in that air settles on the inside of the hood, in its seams and on the filters before what gets through reaches the plenum.
The symptoms we’re asked about most include:
- Overflowing grease troughs and gutters
- Filters that never seem to stay clean
- Wet, greasy drips from the hood
- Poor capture at the hood
A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near Church of the Holy Trinity or elsewhere in Southend, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.

- Whether the quote shows VAT
- Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report

What canopy cleaning looks like in Southend
About 60 miles out from central London, Southend is part of the South East area we work across. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends, so the visit fits around the site. Kitchens in Southend get their food hygiene inspections from Winchester City council. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector.
Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Knowle Hospital (about 4.4 miles south-west), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands. Bursars and site managers at schools such as Newtown Soberton Infant School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.
Southend is about 5 miles north-west of Waterlooville, in Hampshire. Across the SO32 area, we can carry out canopy cleaning at your premises. Southend is one of 683 towns, villages and districts in Hampshire where we work for commercial clients. Our Portsmouth page covers sites nearby, about 8 miles away.
All of SO32 is covered for canopy cleaning, from the main roads to the quietest streets. We also cover the places around Southend: Newtown (1 mile south-west), Soberton Heath (1 mile west), Hoe Gate (1 mile south-east), Woodend (1 mile west) and Hipley (1 mile south). Larger places within reach include Winchester (13 miles north-west), Gosport (8 miles south), Havant (7 miles south-east), Eastleigh (10 miles west), Fareham (6 miles south-west) and Horndean (5 miles east).
Landmarks near Southend
Typical jobs here are in premises near The Bold Forester Public House and the streets around them. The nearest railway station is Portchester station, roughly 5 miles south of the centre. A little further out are Knowle Hospital (4.4 miles south-west). The countryside around Southend includes St Clair's Meadow and Portsdown Hill.
Between visits
So the system stays in good health:
- Tell us when the canopy starts to drip
- Keep the fan on through service
- Keep every filter in place while cooking
- Empty the grease troughs before they fill
The kitchen is handed back clean, with the sheeting gone and the waste removed. Every filter is refitted and checked, and the kitchen is ready to cook.
Clean filters are the canopy’s first defence. Wash or exchange them regularly, and never cook with one missing. Less grease gets into the plenum as a result.
Southend: your questions answered
Can a school canteen extract in Southend be done out of term time?
Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. Food Standards Agency records list about 2 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of Southend. You can call us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form with the dates the site is empty.
Which fire service covers Southend?
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Southend. Records of extract cleaning are a sensible thing to have ready if a fire safety officer carries out an audit.
Do you offer maintenance contracts?
Yes. We run scheduled maintenance contracts, with visits at the interval your system needs. Each report recommends when the next visit should be.
Why is my canopy dripping grease?
Typically because the troughs or gutters are full, or the plenum is overloaded. With nowhere to collect, the grease overflows, and condensation can carry it too. A canopy clean sorts it out.
Who has the legal duty for fire safety?
That depends on who controls the premises. The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty on the responsible person, which can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, an FM or a managing agent.
Are you insured?
Yes. Duct Doctor is fully insured, and we can share the details when you need them.
How far ahead should we book?
The more notice, the better, especially for out-of-hours work. We typically quote within one working day, and emergencies are covered by our 24/7 line.
What does TR19 mean?
TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.
What affects the quote in Southend
We quote each job individually. These are the things that affect it:
- Any permits to work or inductions
- Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
- How many systems or sites are involved
- The times the site is available
Several systems or sites on one quote can make for a more efficient booking. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at and we will price it together.
Helping us quote
When you contact us, it’s useful to have:
- The site address and the type of premises
- Wide pictures of the system and the area around it
- The times we could work without disrupting the site
- The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
To get a fixed quote, ring 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. Photos and the last report, if you have one, make the quote quicker. You will typically have a quote within one working day.
Landlords, agents and facilities managers
Facilities teams in offices, schools and healthcare sites book us too across Hampshire. Work can be phased by floor, building or site to keep disruption down.
Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Every visit ends with a dated report and pictures, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.
What we do, step by step
On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool before we start, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. On site, it takes a few hours for most canopies. If the van will struggle with a lane or gateway near Southend, let us know and we’ll plan around it.
- We start by checking the canopy, filters and plenum.
- Cooking equipment is left to cool and the area under the canopy protected.
- We remove the grease filters and clean the plenum and filter housing.
- Inside and out, the canopy and its grease channels are degreased.
- We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.
How to prepare
- Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
- Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
- Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend
