Shelley canopy cleaning
Specialist canopy cleaning for Shelley: diagnosis first, then a fixed quote, the work and a report with photos. Ask us for a fixed quote.
- Condensation and grease dripping together
- A greasy hood noticed by an inspector
- Heavy deposits behind the grease filters
Why deal with it now?
Grease dripping from the hood can fall onto food, pans and worktops. That’s a hygiene problem as well as a fire one, and EHOs look at the cleanliness of the premises and equipment. Rural sites cannot always move to another kitchen or room when something fails.
You will not find a price list here, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed quote, and we’ll explain what it covers.

Canopy cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Shelley
Canopy cleaning is part of every full TR19® Grease clean, but a canopy can also need cleaning on its own, between full system cleans. In that case, the report makes clear what was and wasn’t cleaned, so your records stay accurate. Common call-outs are for canopy gutters full of old fat and a filter housing caked in grease, on plenum chambers, wall canopies and grease gutters.
For a kitchen in or near Shelley, the visit is planned around opening hours and the journey, and the clean covers the whole system, as it would anywhere: canopy to discharge, then a TR19® certificate and a photo report.
Think of the report as the system’s health record: dated, with pictures, and showing what was done. Grease extract cleans are also certificated to TR19® Grease through the BESCA VHE portal, ready for your insurer.

Multi-site and managed buildings
For anyone managing more than one site, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Each site gets its own report and pictures, so each one has its own record.
We work for landlords, managing agents and facilities managers as well as the people running the site. Where a system serves more than one tenant, such as a shared riser, it helps to agree who arranges the work, and we are happy to quote for all of it.
Looking after it afterwards
Results last longer with the right care. We suggest:
- Run the extract the whole time you are cooking
- Use non-abrasive cloths on the hood
- Flag any change in how the canopy behaves
- Wash or exchange the filters on a regular cycle
Anything worth knowing goes into the report: damaged filters, gaps around the housing or troughs that need emptying more often. It’s a short list of what to watch, not a sales pitch.
Run the extract for as long as anything is cooking. Air that keeps moving carries less grease onto the canopy.
How the visit works
At the end of the visit, someone from your team can look over the work with us. Anything we couldn’t reach or that needs attention is pointed out there and then, and it goes on the report too. All told, the work takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. Pictures of the system and its access let us plan the work in Shelley before we set off.
- We look at the canopy, filters and troughs first.
- Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
- We lift out the filters and scrape the plenum and housing.
- The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
- We put the filters back, tidy up and photograph the finished canopy.
Preparing for the visit
- Find the previous report, if there is one
- Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
- Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
Ask for a quote
Quoting starts with a diagnosis, from your photos and details or, where that isn’t enough, a survey on site. Then we send a fixed price so you know the cost before we start.

FAQs for Shelley
Which environmental health team covers Shelley?
Kitchens in Shelley are inspected by Epping Forest council’s environmental health officers. An officer may look up into the canopy, so clean filters on the day and a recent certificate on file both help.
Can you clean school kitchen extracts in Shelley during the holidays?
Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. Around Shelley, the Food Standards Agency lists about 3 schools and colleges with registered kitchens within a mile and a half or so. Send us your term dates when you call us on 0345 646 2711 or email us, and we’ll fit the work in.
What’s TR19?
It’s the industry benchmark for cleaning ventilation and kitchen extract systems, written by BESA. It sets out inspection, cleaning and record keeping, and it takes a risk-based approach.
Do you work in Shelley?
Yes. We work in Shelley and the rest of Essex, as part of our work across South East England and London. For a fixed quote, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or email photos.
Can we book visits on a schedule?
Yes. We run scheduled maintenance contracts, with visits at the interval your system needs. The report from each visit recommends the next date.
Is there a survey before the work?
Yes. Photos often do the job, while bigger or harder-to-see systems are surveyed on site.
How far ahead should we book?
That depends on the slot you want and the size of the job. Mention your preferred dates with your enquiry, and if it’s an emergency, call us any time.
What happens if you cannot reach some of it?
They’re listed in the report, never skipped quietly. You will know exactly which parts weren’t reached and why, and we can quote to improve the access.
Staff cleaning versus specialist work
A few tasks are always specialist work: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. That’s our job.
Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
What else we do in Shelley
When it’s something else
Not every problem is solved by canopy cleaning, and we’d rather say so up front. It won’t put right:
- A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that is a design question)
- Ductwork and fans beyond the canopy (those need a full TR19 clean)
- A fan that can’t pull enough air because it’s worn out
If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will say what we think before you book.

Grease, kitchens and Shelley
The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 19 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 3 takeaways and sandwich shops in Shelley and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Wherever there’s a canopy over the cooking, its hood and plenum collect grease with every service. Shelley is covered by Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises. In Shelley, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Epping Forest council. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked.
Church and community hall kitchens, near Church of St Peter or anywhere around Shelley, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other. If you run catering at a historic house or estate in the area (Hill Hall is about 4.8 miles south-west), event kitchens in older buildings often have awkward duct runs that need planning.

What we’re called out for in Shelley
Steam and condensation make canopy grease harder to deal with. As the canopy cools, condensation forms and runs with the grease. Drips onto the cooking line are a common result.
Common reasons sites call us are:
- A hood coated in old grease
- Fat running down the front of the hood
- Condensation and grease dripping together
- A canopy that no longer draws the smoke away
If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Ongar Primary School or anywhere near Shelley, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean.
