Canopy cleaning across Sandway

Canopy cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Sandway

The canopy is the part of the extract everyone in the kitchen sees. It’s also the first place cooking vapour meets, so grease gathers on its inner skin, seams and gutters. Our canopy clean covers the shell inside and out, plus the plenum and the filter housing. If you have condensation running down the canopy and heavy deposits behind the grease filters, we can help, from canopy light fittings, grease gutters and plenum chambers onwards.

Somewhere as small as Sandway, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease, whatever the size of the place.

Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured. We’re also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

When it’s something else

We’d rather tell you now than book work that will not help, so these are the things it won’t cover:

  • Electrical faults in the canopy
  • A fan that can’t pull enough air because it’s worn out
  • Filters that no longer seal in the housing

If you’re not sure, just call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Grease gutters
  • Island canopies
  • Wall canopies
  • Plenum chambers
  • Baffle filters
  • Canopy light fittings

What staff can safely do

When your team notices a problem between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that won’t come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We can diagnose it and quote.

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, and that is where we come in.

What affects the cost of canopy cleaning

The price is fixed before any work begins. It’s based on:

  • Any permits to work or inductions
  • Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
  • When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
  • Parking and loading at the site

Several systems or sites on one quote often makes better use of the time. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at, and you’ll get one fixed quote.

What we need to know

A few details help us quote accurately. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is
  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet

For a fixed quote, call 0345 646 2711, or email photos and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. Photos and the last report, if you have one, make the quote quicker. We normally come back within one working day.

Your questions about canopy cleaning in Sandway

Do you work overnight in Sandway?

Yes, out-of-hours work is a big part of what we do. Your customers, staff or residents in Sandway needn’t be disturbed. Just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email with your opening times and we will plan around them.

Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Sandway?

Kent Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Sandway. If a fire safety officer visits a commercial kitchen, they may ask about the fire risk assessment and how the extract is kept clean.

Can one contract cover all our sites?

Yes. You deal with one contact for every site across London and the South East, with visits on a regular schedule.

Can I just have the canopy cleaned instead of the whole system?

Canopy cleaning is part of TR19, not the whole of it. We’ll make clear on the report which parts were cleaned so nobody mistakes it for a full system clean.

What is TR19?

TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.

What kinds of canopies do you clean?

Most commercial kitchen canopies, from one small hood to a long run of canopies. We work out the approach when we survey, from pictures or a visit.

What information do you need?

The site address, the type of premises and your opening hours, plus photos of the system and your last certificate or report if you have one.

Are the filters cleaned too?

The filters come out so the plenum behind them can be cleaned, then clean and refit them. Any that are damaged are noted on the report.

Leave it or put it right?

A canopy clean in Sandway now stops the grease spreading further. It takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several, out of hours so service carries on. Left alone, grease keeps moving into the plenum and duct. Equipment tucked in a roof space or outbuilding near Sandway rarely gets looked at unless someone books it.

The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why we survey first, from photos or on site, and the price is agreed before we start.

Why us?

Keeping the system healthy

How long the results last depends on use and care. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Check filters aren’t leaving gaps
  • Keep filters on a set cleaning routine
  • Use non-abrasive cloths on the hood
  • Check and empty canopy gutters regularly

File the report alongside your fire risk assessment where an inspector can see it. Before and after photos speak for themselves.

A daily wipe of the hood keeps fresh grease from baking on. It does not reach the plenum, but it stops the outside building up.

Grease, kitchens and Sandway

Food Standards Agency records include about 6 pubs and bars within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Sandway. Any of them serving cooked food has an extract to keep clean, from canopy to discharge. Sandway is covered by Kent Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel. In Sandway, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Maidstone council. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready.

Where a hall near St Mary's Church, or anywhere in Sandway, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does. Older buildings often hide long, awkward duct runs, and if you run a kitchen at a historic venue in the area (Leeds Castle is about 3.3 miles north-west), access may need planning.

Sandway is about 8 miles east of Maidstone, in Kent. We carry out canopy cleaning for commercial premises of every kind in Sandway and the rest of Kent. Our area takes in 922 places across Kent, large and small. You can also see our page for Maidstone, roughly 8 miles from Sandway.

Our technicians cover all of the ME17 postcode area for canopy cleaning and the roads nearby. Streets in the area include Headcorn Road, Sandway Road and Old Ham Lane, and we cover them all for canopy cleaning. Other places close to Sandway include Platt's Heath (1 mile south-west), Liverton Street (1 mile south-west), Boughton Malherbe (1 mile south), Marley (1 mile north-west) and Harrietsham (1 mile north-west). Within a short drive, we also cover Maidstone (8 miles west), Ashford (9 miles south-east), Sittingbourne (8 miles north), Faversham (10 miles north-east), Minster (14 miles north) and Kings Hill (13 miles west).

Local landmarks in Sandway

Locally, jobs take us to businesses close to Kiln Wood, The Lenham School and Wishful Thinker pub. The nearest railway station is Lenham station, about 0.5 miles north-east. Nearby you will also find The Dog Collar Museum (3.2 miles north-west) and Coldbridge Castle (2.1 miles south).

What we are called out for in Sandway

Any canopy in Sandway that’s used for cooking will gather grease in the end. It’s fuel, sitting directly over the burners, which is why a flare-up near a dirty canopy is so dangerous.

What we are most often called out for:

  • A filter housing caked in grease
  • Wet, greasy drips from the hood
  • Poor capture at the hood
  • Grease channels that no longer drain

If you run a café or takeaway near Lenham station, early starts and late finishes leave little time to clean, so overnight extract cleaning suits.

Questions to ask before booking

How it works

Everything the job needs comes with us, from protective sheeting to tools and access equipment. You only need to give us clear access and switch off what needs to be off. On site, the work takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. Seeing the system in pictures first means the trip to Sandway can be planned properly.

  1. Diagnosis first: we look behind the filters as well as at the hood.
  2. We protect everything below once it has cooled.
  3. Thick grease is scraped away before the canopy is degreased.
  4. Plenum, housing, troughs and canopy are all cleaned and checked.
  5. You get pictures of the result and a recommended date for the next clean.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
  • Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
  • Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
