When something else is needed

An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what canopy cleaning won’t do:

  • Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor
  • Bent or broken filters
  • A canopy undersized for the equipment

If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will say what we think.

Canopy cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Parkeston

Canopy cleans are done out of hours: after service, overnight or at the weekend. Cooking equipment is turned off and cooled, then covered so the kitchen is ready when we go. The work covers island canopies, wall canopies and grease gutters, and the jobs we see most are grease dripping from the canopy edge and filters that clog soon after cleaning.

Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, and those horizontal sections are where grease settles. We agree access and timings in advance.

For insurers and inspectors, the record counts. That is why every job is written up in a report with photos, plus a TR19® certificate through the BESCA VHE portal where the work is a TR19® Grease clean.

How we price canopy cleaning

We quote each job individually. These are the things that affect it:

  • The number of sites or systems
  • When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
  • The condition we find in the survey
  • The scale of the work

Every site is different, so each one gets its own fixed quote. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all make a difference.

What to send for a quote

What to send for a quote:

  • The times we could work without disrupting the site
  • How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is
  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow

Quotes are quick. Call or email with a few details and you will normally have a fixed price within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.

FAQs for Parkeston

Which fire authority looks after Parkeston?

That is Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. TR19® is not law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.

Is Parkeston within the area you cover?

Yes, Parkeston is part of our area, however small the site. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.

Does a canopy clean meet TR19?

A canopy-only clean is possible, but it is not a full TR19 clean. For TR19, the whole system needs cleaning, at intervals set by BESA guidance.

Do you clean canopies in all kinds of kitchens?

Single hoods, long wall canopies and island canopies alike. The survey tells us how best to clean yours, from photos or a visit.

How long does canopy cleaning take?

It takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. We will confirm how long when we quote.

Is TR19 a legal requirement?

No. TR19® itself is not law; it’s a BESA specification. The law is the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which makes the responsible person assess and reduce fire risk, and cleaning to TR19® is the recognised way to show grease is under control.

What about areas you cannot get to?

They’re marked on the report. In ductwork, new access panels are often the answer, which we can install.

What is TR19?

TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.

How it works

The first job on site is protection: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. Then we make the system safe and start. The work on site takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. Somewhere as small as Parkeston, the date and timings are agreed with you well before the day.

  1. We start by checking the canopy and what’s behind its filters.
  2. Equipment is turned off and cooled, and the area under the canopy is protected.
  3. Heavy deposits come off by hand, then the surfaces are degreased.
  4. We finish the plenum, troughs and canopy and check them over.
  5. You get photos of the result and a recommended date for the next clean.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
  • Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
  • Clear loose items from the work area

Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before work begins.

Part by part

School and staff canteen kitchens

Canteen staff see the canopy, not the duct behind it. The canopy and plenum are both cleaned, so what’s out of sight is dealt with too.

Island canopies

Island canopies hang over cooking in the middle of the kitchen, so every face can collect grease. Each face is cleaned inside and out.

What we are called out for in Parkeston

A canopy with gaps around its filters lets grease straight through. The plenum and housing behind them then take far more grease than they should, which shows up as heavy deposits when the filters come out.

What we are most often called out for:

  • Filters that clog soon after cleaning
  • Wet, greasy drips from the hood
  • A canopy flagged at an environmental health inspection
  • Poor capture at the hood

A hospital like Felixstowe Community Hospital, about 4.5 miles east, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.

What your quote should include

  • Whether a survey comes first
  • Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach
  • Proof of insurance
  • If the quote is a fixed price or an estimate

Managing agents and facilities teams in Parkeston

Managing agents often deal with us directly. Send the address, what’s needed and how access works, and we’ll send a fixed quote.

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We work across London and the South East, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept on a regular cycle.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.

A few tasks are always specialist work: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.
