Kitchen extracts in Onslow Village

Food Standards Agency records include about 42 bars, pubs and nightclubs and about 3 hotels and B&Bs in Onslow Village and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Where they serve hot food, their kitchen extracts need cleaning to TR19® like any restaurant’s. Onslow Village is covered by Surrey Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel. Kitchens in Onslow Village get their food hygiene inspections from Guildford council. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. Before-and-after photos from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand.

If you run catering at a historic house or estate in the area (Guildford Castle is about 1.3 miles east), event kitchens in older buildings often have awkward duct runs that need planning. School kitchens, at schools like Onslow Infant School for example, are usually cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost. Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Royal Surrey County Hospital is the nearest hospital to Onslow Village, about 0.5 miles north-west.

Onslow Village is about 2 miles south-west of Guildford, in Surrey. Onslow Village gets the same approach as every site we work on: diagnosis first, a fixed price, out-of-hours working where needed and a written report with photos. Across Surrey, we cover 395 places, Onslow Village among them.

Canopy cleaning in Onslow Village

We have been cleaning kitchen canopies since we started trading in 2009. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’re fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. We are often asked to deal with heavy deposits behind the grease filters and grease channels that no longer drain, on grease gutters, baffle filters and canopy light fittings.

Size doesn’t change the work: a kitchen in a place like Onslow Village gets the whole system cleaned, canopy to discharge. We plan the visit around your hours, with the journey sorted in advance.

Every visit ends with a written report and photos, so there’s a dated record of the work. Where the work is a TR19® Grease clean, the certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

What happens on the day

The first job on site is protection: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. Then we make the system safe and start. The work on site takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several, and we clear up before we go. Your opening hours decide when we come to Onslow Village, not ours.

  1. Diagnosis first: we look behind the filters as well as at the hood.
  2. We protect everything below once it has cooled.
  3. Heavy deposits come off by hand, then the surfaces are degreased.
  4. Plenum, housing, troughs and canopy are all cleaned and checked.
  5. The canopy is signed off with before and after photos and a next clean date.

Related advice

Keeping the system healthy

A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. Our advice:

  • Leave the extract running until cooking stops
  • Tell us when the canopy starts to drip
  • Check and empty canopy gutters regularly
  • Refit filters the right way round and fully seated

The kitchen is handed back clean, with the sheeting gone and the waste removed. Every filter is refitted and checked ready for the next service.

Tell us if the canopy starts dripping or the filters clog sooner than usual. More drips or quicker clogging often mean the cleaning interval needs looking at, which a grease thickness test can confirm.

What happens if it’s left?

Grease dripping from the hood can fall onto food, pans and worktops. That is a hygiene problem as well as a fire one, and environmental health officers look at the cleanliness of equipment, extraction included. Booking now means the visit to Onslow Village is planned around you, not forced by a breakdown.

When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is can all change the price. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before work begins.

What staff can safely do

Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Keep a record of what your team does. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, alongside our reports.

What affects the cost of canopy cleaning

Every site gets its own quote. This is what makes a difference:

  • The scale of the work
  • Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
  • Any permits to work or inductions
  • One-off work versus a regular cycle

Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Call for a fixed quote and we will explain each part.

Helping us quote

Many jobs can be priced from photos and some basics. Useful things to send:

  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet
  • The site address and the type of premises
  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
  • A few general shots of the system

Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.

When something else is needed

Canopy cleaning cannot fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It doesn’t solve:

  • A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that is a design question)
  • Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor
  • Bent or broken filters

Not sure which it is? You can ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we will tell you honestly before booking.

What the work covers

  • Baffle filters
  • Plenum chambers
  • Grease gutters
  • Island canopies
  • Wall canopies
  • Canopy light fittings

Onslow Village questions

Can school kitchens in Onslow Village be cleaned in the holidays?

Yes, holiday work suits schools best. Food Standards Agency records list about 24 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of Onslow Village. Booking early in the term gives the best choice of holiday dates.

Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Onslow Village?

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Onslow Village. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.

Is TR19 a legal requirement?

No. The law sets the duty; TR19® is the benchmark used to show it’s met. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, the responsible person must reduce fire risk, and many insurers can refuse or reduce a claim without proof of cleaning.

Do you clean canopies in all kinds of kitchens?

Wall and island canopies, long cooking-line hoods and small single hoods. The method is the same: filters out, plenum and housing cleaned, canopy degreased inside and out.

Can you clean the canopy outside our opening hours?

The clean is done out of hours: after service, overnight or before opening. Equipment under the canopy needs to be off and cool.

Do we need to close while you work?

Usually not. Out-of-hours visits keep the disruption down. Larger jobs can be phased over several visits so parts stay in use.

How do you protect the area?

With sheeting and covers, before anything else happens. We keep the work contained and leave the area clean.

What if parts of the system cannot be reached?

We record them on the report, with photos where possible, and we tell you what would make it reachable, such as extra access panels in ductwork.

What the work involves, part by part

School and staff canteen kitchens

Lighter cooking still leaves grease on the canopy. BESA guidance still sets a minimum interval for the whole system, and the canopy is part of it.

Plenums and filter housings

The rails and channels that hold the filters collect grease. Clean housings let the filters seat properly and leave no gaps.
