What the work involves, part by part

Island canopies

The underside of an island canopy is in full view so a clean, even finish matters. It’s degreased and photographed for your report.

School and staff canteen kitchens

Lighter cooking still leaves grease on the canopy. The whole system still needs cleaning at least every 12 months under BESA guidance, and the canopy is part of it.

How we handle canopy cleaning in Oldbury

We’ve been cleaning kitchen canopies since we started trading in 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. Typical jobs include condensation and grease dripping together and grease filters blocking between washes, across grease gutters, canopy light fittings and island canopies.

In a village or hamlet like Oldbury, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are typically a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease.

Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.

Canopy cleaning in Oldbury: the local picture

The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 10 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 6 takeaways and sandwich shops within about 1.5 miles of central Oldbury. Where they cook under a hood, the plenum behind the filters is where grease hides. Fire safety in Oldbury falls to Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract. Environmental health officers from Tonbridge and Malling council inspect food businesses in Oldbury. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready.

Healthcare kitchens cannot easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Oldbury is Sevenoaks Hospital, about 3.5 miles west. Where a hall near Church of St Peter, or anywhere in Oldbury, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does.

Oldbury is about 4 miles east of Sevenoaks, in Kent. We carry out canopy cleaning for businesses, landlords and public buildings in Oldbury and the rest of Kent. Oldbury is one of 922 places in Kent where we work for canopy cleaning. Maidstone is in our area too, about 11 miles from Oldbury.

All of TN15 is covered for canopy cleaning, from the main roads to the quietest streets. If you need canopy cleaning at premises on Oldbury Lane, Spring Lane and Sevenoaks Road or a nearby road, our technicians can take on the work. We also cover the places around Oldbury: Ightham (1 mile south), Styants Bottom (1 mile west), Ivy Hatch (1 mile south), Sheet Hill (1 mile south-east) and Stone Street (1 mile south-west). We also work in nearby towns such as Maidstone (11 miles east), Dartford (11 miles north), Sevenoaks (4 miles west), Royal Tunbridge Wells (10 miles south), Gravesend (11 miles north-east) and Tonbridge (6 miles south).

Local landmarks in Oldbury

Around Oldbury, our work takes us to kitchens and buildings near The Old House, Ivy Hatch Nature Reserve and Wrotham School. For rail, the closest station is Borough Green & Wrotham station, about 1.4 miles north-east of the centre. A little further out are Beechin Wood Archery Museum (2.4 miles east) and Ightham Court (0.8 miles north-east).

Honest limits

An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what this work can’t put right:

  • Electrical faults in the canopy
  • Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)
  • A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that is a design question)

Not sure which it is? You can call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll tell you honestly.

What the work covers

  • Baffle filters
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Grease gutters
  • Plenum chambers
  • Island canopies
  • Wall canopies

What happens if it’s left?

Grease dripping from the hood can fall onto food, pans and worktops. That’s a hygiene problem as well as a fire one, and EHOs look at the cleanliness of the premises and equipment. It’s worth booking a check, because nobody sees inside a duct day to day.

We don’t list prices on the website, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. For a fixed quote, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form, and we will explain what it covers.

The process

There are three stages on the day: getting the area ready, doing the work and signing it off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, while signing off means the written report and photos. Most of the time goes on the work itself, which takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. Somewhere as small as Oldbury, the date and timings are agreed with you well before the day.

  1. We start by checking the canopy and what’s behind its filters.
  2. Equipment is turned off and cooled, and the area under the canopy is protected.
  3. Heavy deposits come off by hand, then the surfaces are degreased.
  4. We finish the plenum, troughs and canopy and check them over.
  5. You get photos of the result and a recommended date for the next clean.

Preparing for the visit

  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
  • Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet

Oldbury questions

Can you come to Oldbury after we close?

Yes. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends. It means the site in Oldbury keeps running as normal. Let us know the hours you’re closed and we’ll book within them.

Who carries out food hygiene inspections in Oldbury?

That’s Tonbridge and Malling council, whose environmental health officers carry out food hygiene inspections in Oldbury. It helps to keep the extract cleaning records with your food safety paperwork, so they’re ready if asked for.

Which sectors do you work in?

We work for restaurants, pubs, hotels, schools, colleges, hospitals, care homes, offices and shops, as well as food production and leisure sites.

How far ahead should we book?

Book as early as you can for planned work, particularly if your next visit is nearly due. Emergencies are different, because our line is open 24/7.

What does canopy cleaning cost?

The cost depends on the size of the system, its condition, access and timing. Call for a fixed quote, typically ready within one working day.

Are the filters cleaned too?

The filters are removed, cleaned and put back. We check each one seats properly, because gaps let grease through.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes. We always survey first, from your pictures and details, or with a visit where needed. A fixed quote follows.

What accreditations do you have?

Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.

Keeping the system healthy

Results last longer with the right care. We suggest:

  • Never run the range with a filter out
  • Refit filters the right way round and fully seated
  • Don’t scrape the canopy with metal tools
  • Wipe the canopy down at close every day

Where the canopy is cleaned as part of a full TR19® Grease clean, a TR19 certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. Where only the canopy is done, the report says so clearly.

Tell us if the canopy starts dripping or the filters clog sooner than usual. It can mean the cooking has changed or the interval is too long, which a grease thickness test can confirm.

Signs you need canopy cleaning in Oldbury

Because the plenum sits behind the filters, it’s easy to forget. Daily cleaning reaches the canopy face but rarely gets further, leaving the plenum and housing to collect grease between professional cleans.

Most sites get in touch when they notice something like this:

  • Drips from the canopy onto the range
  • A greasy hood noticed by an inspector
  • Grease filters blocking between washes
  • Wet, greasy drips from the hood

If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Ightham Primary School or anywhere near Oldbury, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean.

What your quote should include

  • What hours they’ll be on site
  • Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report
  • What paperwork you get at the end
  • Whether the price is fixed

How we price canopy cleaning

We do not publish a price list, because sites vary so much. What we look at:

  • Site rules, permits and inductions
  • Where the site is and how we reach it
  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • Whether we need access equipment or extra panels

What you pay depends on the size of the system, what state it’s in and access to every part of it. You get a fixed price before work begins, so there are no surprises.

Asking for a quote

A few details help us quote accurately. With your enquiry, please include:

  • A few general shots of the system
  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
  • The postcode and the type of business
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels

Here’s what helps us quote: where the site is, what it is and its opening hours, pictures of the system and any previous report or certificate. Once you have those, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email.
