Canopy cleaning in Nine Ashes

Of the whole extract system, the canopy is the bit on show. Being first in line, it collects grease on the inside surfaces, along the seams and in the troughs. Our canopy clean covers the shell inside and out, plus the plenum and the filter housing. We’re often asked to deal with drips from the canopy onto the range and condensation and grease dripping together, across grease gutters, canopy light fittings and island canopies.

Somewhere as small as Nine Ashes, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease, whatever the size of the place.

The paperwork matters as much as the work. You get a written report with photos after each visit, listing what was done, anything we couldn’t reach and when the next visit is due. Keep it with your fire safety records so it’s ready for an insurer, fire officer or EHO.

What your team can do, and what needs us

Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, next to our reports.

What we are called out for in Nine Ashes

A canopy with gaps around its filters lets grease straight through. More grease reaches the plenum and housing than they’re designed to take, which shows up as heavy deposits when the filters come out.

It’s time to book a visit if you see:

  • Fat running down the front of the hood
  • Filters that clog soon after cleaning
  • Canopy gutters full of old fat
  • Greasy streaks across the canopy

A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near Church of St Laurence or elsewhere in Nine Ashes, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.

How to choose an extract cleaning contractor

When it’s something else

To be straight with you, there are a few things this work will not fix:

  • A light fitting that does not work
  • Bent or broken filters
  • Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy

Not sure which it is? You can phone us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we will tell you honestly before you book.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Grease gutters
  • Island canopies
  • Baffle filters
  • Wall canopies
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Plenum chambers

What we do, step by step

There’s very little for your team to do on the day. A contact on site lets us in at the agreed time and points us to the system, and we take it from there. Afterwards, the area is left tidy and the written report follows. Pictures of the system and its access let us plan the work in Nine Ashes before we set off.

  1. The canopy is checked from photos or on a visit.
  2. Out of hours, the range is switched off, cooled and covered.
  3. We lift out the filters and scrape the plenum and housing.
  4. The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
  5. Filters are refitted, the area cleaned down and the photo report put together.

Getting ready for the visit

Looking after it afterwards

Simple habits between visits make a real difference. Our advice:

  • Run the extract the whole time you’re cooking
  • Tell us when the canopy starts to drip
  • Avoid harsh scourers that scratch the canopy
  • Check filters aren’t leaving gaps

We recommend when the canopy, or the whole system, should next be cleaned. That date is based on your cooking hours and what we found, in line with BESA guidance.

Clean filters are the canopy’s first defence. Keep them on a regular cleaning or exchange cycle, and make sure they’re all in place before cooking. The plenum behind them stays cleaner.

What the work involves, part by part

Pub and hotel kitchens

In a pub or hotel, the canopy is often in view of staff all day, so drips and smells soon become a daily nuisance. A thorough clean puts that right.

Plenums and filter housings

The rails and channels that hold the filters collect grease. We clean them so the filters sit tight and leave no gaps.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare in Nine Ashes and across Essex. Work can be phased by floor, building or site around the people who use them.

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.

Nine Ashes: your questions answered

Who inspects food businesses in Nine Ashes?

In Nine Ashes, it’s Epping Forest council that carries out food hygiene inspections. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.

Can the work in Nine Ashes be done at night or at weekends?

Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. Your customers, staff or residents in Nine Ashes needn’t be disturbed. When you ring 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form, mention when the site is quiet.

What’s TR19?

TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.

Where does the waste go?

Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, from grease and debris to used cleaning water. We don’t leave it behind.

What do you do to protect the area?

We cover floors and nearby surfaces with sheeting before any work starts, and waste is contained as we go. Before we leave, we tidy up and clean down.

Are you accredited?

CHAS, SafeContractor, ISO 9001 and BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We have been trading since 2009 and we’re fully insured.

Why is my canopy dripping grease?

Grease that builds up inside the canopy has to go somewhere. Once the troughs and plenum are full, it runs down and drips, often mixed with condensation. A thorough clean stops it.

Are the filters cleaned too?

We remove the filters to reach the plenum, and they’re cleaned before going back in. Any that are damaged are noted on the report.
