Need canopy cleaning in Lordswood?

Canopy cleaning in Lordswood, done properly

Every TR19® Grease clean includes the canopy, but a canopy can also need cleaning on its own, between full system cleans. Where that is the case, we will be clear that the ducts and fan are not included, so your records stay accurate. The work covers canopy light fittings, island canopies and wall canopies, and people most often call us about wet, greasy drips from the hood and canopy gutters full of old fat.

In a smaller place like Lordswood, the kitchens with extract systems are more likely to be a pub, a café, a takeaway or a school or care home kitchen than a big restaurant. Quieter kitchens still collect grease in the duct, just more slowly, so cleaning is planned around how much it cooks and what the readings show.

Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.

What we do, step by step

Night work is normal for us. A lot of visits happen overnight or at weekends, so the site can open as normal afterwards. On site, the work takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. Visits to a place like Lordswood are planned ahead, so we arrive with what the survey says the job needs.

  1. First the canopy is surveyed, by pictures or in person.
  2. Equipment below is switched off and left to cool, then sheeted.
  3. With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned back.
  4. We degrease the canopy shell, its seams and the grease troughs.
  5. Filters go back, the area is cleaned down and pictures are taken.

How to prepare

  • Have your last certificate or report to hand
  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
  • Clear the space around the work

Lordswood: your questions answered

Can school kitchens in Lordswood be cleaned in the holidays?

Yes, out-of-term visits are normal for schools. Around Lordswood, the Food Standards Agency lists about 21 schools and colleges with registered kitchens within a mile and a half or so. Send us your term dates when you give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us, and we will fit the work in.

Which fire authority looks after Lordswood?

Lordswood is in the area of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. It’s worth keeping your fire risk assessment, TR19® certificates and photo reports together, ready to show.

Is TR19 a legal requirement?

No. TR19® itself isn’t law; it’s a BESA specification. The legal duty comes from the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005: the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and cleaning to TR19® is the recognised way to show grease is under control.

How long is a canopy clean?

A single canopy with a light build-up is fairly quick, while long canopies, several hoods or heavy deposits take more time. You’ll know before we start.

Who has the legal duty for fire safety?

It depends on the building. The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty on the responsible person, which can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, an FM or a managing agent.

Do we need to close the kitchen for a canopy clean?

Only while we’re working, and we work out of hours, so most kitchens do not lose a service. Evenings, overnight and weekends are all possible.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes. For many sites, pictures and a few details are enough, and larger or hidden systems get a visit.

What paperwork do I get after a canopy clean?

A photo report shows the canopy and plenum before and after. If the canopy is cleaned as part of a full TR19 clean, a TR19 certificate is issued too.

What affects the cost of canopy cleaning

The diagnosis comes before the price. We look at:

  • How big the system is
  • A single visit or a regular plan
  • Travel, parking and unloading
  • Site requirements such as sign-in and permits

Combining work into one visit or one programme can make for a more efficient booking. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at and we’ll price it together.

What to send for a quote

To help us quote quickly, please include:

  • Problems your staff have spotted
  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is
  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels

To help us quote: the address, the type of site and when it’s open, pictures of the system and the last certificate or report, if there is one. Then call 0345 646 2711 or email us.

What we are called out for in Lordswood

However carefully a kitchen in Lordswood is run, the canopy still collects grease. That grease is fuel sitting right above the heat, which is why a flare-up near a dirty canopy is so dangerous.

These are the problems we see most often:

  • A greasy hood noticed by an inspector
  • A sticky, discoloured canopy
  • Fat running down the front of the hood
  • A canopy that no longer draws the smoke away

Where a hall near Lord's Hill Church, or anywhere in Lordswood, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does.

Before you book anyone

  • How areas they can’t reach will be recorded
  • What paperwork you get at the end
  • Whether the figure could change on the day

Canopy cleaning in Lordswood: the local picture

The coast is only about 3 miles from Lordswood. Metal on the roof weathers faster close to the coast, and the extract fan and cowl are no exception. The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 21 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 22 takeaways and sandwich shops in Lordswood and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Where they cook under a hood, the plenum behind the filters is where grease hides. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service covers Lordswood. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.

If you run catering at a historic house or estate in the area (South Stoneham House is about 2.4 miles east), event kitchens in older buildings often have awkward duct runs that need planning. Bursars and site managers at schools such as Oakwood Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.

A little further out are Marlands Shopping Centre (2.8 miles south-east) and Princess Anne Hospital (0.5 miles south). For a walk, there’s Testwood Lakes.

When it’s something else

Canopy cleaning can’t fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It will not put right:

  • Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor
  • Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)
  • Ductwork and fans beyond the canopy (those need a full TR19 clean)

Not sure which it is? You can phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.

Managing agents and facilities teams in Lordswood

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We work across London and the South East, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept on a regular cycle.

From a single site to a large estate, the standard is the same: diagnosis, a fixed price, work booked around your hours and a written report with pictures.

Why act early in Lordswood

Drips from a dirty canopy land on the cooking line. It’s a food hygiene concern as much as a fire concern, and environmental health officers look at the cleanliness of equipment, extraction included. A visit arranged in advance is far less disruptive than a callout on a busy day.

You will not find a price list here, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed quote, and we will explain what it covers.

Between visits

Here’s the after-treatment advice, short and simple:

  • Use non-abrasive cloths on the hood
  • Keep filters on a set cleaning routine
  • Report new drips or smells from the canopy
  • Check filters aren’t leaving gaps

A full system clean comes with a TR19 certificate from the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. Where only the canopy is done, the report says so clearly.

Do not let canopy gutters fill to the brim. Overflowing troughs are the usual cause of drips onto the range, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.
