Canopy cleaning in Landport

Part by part

School and staff canteen kitchens

In a school or workplace canteen, the canopy is often the only part of the extract staff ever see. The canopy and plenum are both cleaned, so what’s out of sight is dealt with too.

Pub and hotel kitchens

A hotel or pub kitchen can rarely close for long. Canopy cleans are done late at night or early in the morning so the kitchen keeps trading.

Canopy cleaning in Landport, done properly

Grease troughs, seams and the inside edge of the canopy are the spots a daily wipe misses. We scrape the heavy deposits, then degrease the surfaces with methods that suit the build-up, using hot water or steam where it helps. We are often asked to deal with a canopy flagged at an environmental health inspection and a hood coated in old grease, across grease gutters, canopy light fittings and island canopies.

In a smaller place like Landport, many kitchens sit in older buildings or later extensions, where the duct may cross a roof void or climb an outside wall. Long horizontal runs like that hold grease and need access panels to reach.

Every visit ends with a written report and photos, so you have a record of what was done and when. Where the work is a TR19® Grease clean, the certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

How it works

The visit has three parts: getting the area ready, doing the work and signing it off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, and the sign-off is a written report with pictures. The middle part takes longest, which takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. Everything the job in Landport needs is worked out beforehand, from the survey.

  1. We start by checking the canopy, filters and plenum.
  2. Equipment below is switched off and left to cool, then sheeted.
  3. Filters come out and the plenum behind them is scraped and degreased.
  4. The canopy is cleaned inside and out, including troughs and seams.
  5. Filters go back, the area is cleaned down and photos are taken.

How to prepare

  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
  • Let us know about parking and loading
  • Agree a time when the area can be out of use

How to get a quote

Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before we start.

Advice

What your team can do, and what needs us

When your team notices a problem between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that won’t come clean, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We’ll take a look and give you a fixed quote.

Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, next to our reports.

Landport kitchens: local notes

At about 1 mile from the coast, Landport is close enough for sea air to matter. Salt in the air is hard on rooftop fans, discharge cowls and fixings, so we check them for corrosion as well as grease. Food Standards Agency records include about 98 pubs, bars and clubs and about 17 hotels, B&Bs and guest houses within about 1.5 miles of central Landport. Breakfasts, bar meals and functions all put grease into the extract wherever they’re cooked. Food hygiene inspections in Landport are the job of Portsmouth council’s environmental health team. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector.

Commuter trade near Portsmouth & Southsea station can mean long cooking hours, and long hours put a kitchen into BESA’s more frequent cleaning bands. School kitchens, at schools like Ark Dickens Primary Academy for example, are usually cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.

Aftercare tips

Here’s the after-treatment advice, short and simple:

  • Keep every filter in place while cooking
  • Wipe the canopy down at close every day
  • Make sure filters sit tight in the housing
  • Check and empty canopy gutters regularly

Anything worth knowing goes into the report: damaged filters, gaps around the housing or troughs that need emptying more often. We keep it to what matters.

A daily wipe of the hood keeps fresh grease from baking on. It does not reach the plenum, but it stops the outside building up.

Landport questions

Which environmental health team covers Landport?

In Landport, it’s Portsmouth council that carries out food hygiene inspections. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.

Do you do school kitchen extract cleaning in Landport in the summer holidays?

Yes. The holidays are the usual time for school work. With about 37 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of Landport, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. Send us your term dates when you call 0345 646 2711 or send us an email, and we’ll fit the work in.

Does the law say we must follow TR19?

Not in itself. Insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to TR19® as the benchmark, and many insurers ask for proof of cleaning to it. The legal duty sits in the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 in England and Wales.

Do you offer emergency callouts?

Yes. Our emergency line runs 24/7, for problems that cannot wait. Ring any time and tell us what’s happened.

What does TR19 mean?

It’s BESA’s specification and the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to. It covers how systems are inspected, cleaned and checked and expects a risk-based approach.

What do you need from me for a quote?

Only a few details: where it is, what kind of site, when it’s open and the access. Photos and any previous paperwork make it quicker. Then call us on 0345 646 2711 or email us.

Is the inside of the hood cleaned?

All of it: the outer surfaces, the inner skin, the seams and the troughs. We also remove the filters and clean the plenum and housing behind them, since that is where grease hides.

Where does the waste go?

We take it away when we go. During the work, it’s contained to keep the area clean.

For landlords and multi-site operators

Landlords, managing agents and facilities managers book us, not only the businesses that use the systems. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we are happy to quote for all of it.

Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit produces a dated report with photos, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.

Do you need canopy cleaning in Landport?

Grease that runs down the inside of a canopy gathers in its gutters and troughs. Left to fill up, they spill over, and grease ends up dripping from the canopy edge.

These are the problems we see most often:

  • Condensation running down the canopy
  • Heavy deposits behind the grease filters
  • Drips from the canopy onto the range
  • Grease channels that no longer drain

Church and community hall kitchens, near Church of All Saints or anywhere around Landport, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other.

What to look for in a quote

  • Exactly which parts of the system are covered
  • When they can work, and whether that’s outside your opening hours
  • Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
  • Whether they recommend a next date
