Canopy cleaning in Jaywick

We’ve been cleaning kitchen canopies since we started trading in 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers wall canopies, baffle filters and island canopies, and common reasons people get in touch are grease dripping from the canopy edge and canopy gutters full of old fat.

In a smaller place like Jaywick, many kitchens sit in older buildings or later extensions, with the duct running through a roof space or up an outside wall. Flat runs collect grease and need proper access to clean.

Good records are part of the job. Each visit is written up with photos, listing what was done, anything we couldn’t reach and when the next visit is due. Keep it with your fire safety records so it’s to hand when an insurer or inspector asks.

FAQs for Jaywick

Do you do school kitchen extract cleaning in Jaywick in the summer holidays?

Yes. The holidays are the usual time for school work. The FSA’s register shows about 5 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of Jaywick. Just phone us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form with your term dates and we’ll plan around them.

Who would carry out a food hygiene inspection at a kitchen in Jaywick?

In Jaywick, it’s Tendring council that carries out food hygiene inspections. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.

What happens to the waste?

Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, from grease and debris to used cleaning water. We do not leave it behind.

Do you have insurance?

Yes, we’re fully insured. We also hold CHAS and SafeContractor, for sites that check contractor safety.

Do you clean the grease filters as part of a canopy clean?

They’re taken out, cleaned and refitted. Each filter is checked for fit as it goes back, because gaps let grease through.

What do you do to protect the area?

We start with protection: floor sheeting and covers over nearby surfaces and equipment. The area is left tidy, with our waste taken away.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes. Every job is surveyed first, either from pictures and details you send or on a site visit. A fixed quote follows.

Is Jaywick in your area?

Yes. We work across Greater London, Surrey, Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex, and that includes Jaywick.

Canopy cleaning around Jaywick

The coast is only about 1 mile from Jaywick. Near the sea, the fan and discharge at the top of a kitchen extract corrode faster than they would inland. The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 16 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 12 takeaways and sandwich shops across Jaywick and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Every kitchen among them that cooks under a canopy has a hood, plenum and filters collecting grease. Jaywick sits within the area of Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.

Bursars and site managers at schools such as Sir Martin Frobisher Academy tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty. Church and community hall kitchens, near St Christopher or anywhere around Jaywick, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other.

Jaywick is about 2 miles south-west of Clacton-on-Sea, in Essex. We carry out canopy cleaning for commercial premises of every kind in Jaywick and the rest of Essex. 644 places in Essex are on our list, from busy centres to quieter spots. Between visits

A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. Our advice:

  • Make sure filters sit tight in the housing
  • Clean the hood’s outer surfaces daily
  • Keep filters on a set cleaning routine
  • Check and empty canopy gutters regularly

We point out anything we noticed while the canopy was apart: damaged filters, gaps around the housing or troughs that need emptying more often. We keep it to what matters.

Keep the fan running throughout service and for a short while after. Turning the fan off early lets vapour settle on the hood.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, which is where we come in.

A few tasks are always specialist work: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease need training, the right equipment and safe access. That’s our job.

When it’s something else

Canopy cleaning cannot fix everything, and we’ll tell you before we start. It won’t put right:

  • A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that’s a design question)
  • Electrical faults in the canopy
  • Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor

If you are not sure, just call us on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will give you a straight answer.

What the work covers

  • Baffle filters
  • Wall canopies
  • Grease gutters
  • Plenum chambers
  • Island canopies
  • Canopy light fittings

Different parts, different methods

Pub and hotel kitchens

In a pub or hotel, the canopy is often in view of staff all day, so a dripping hood quickly becomes everyone’s problem. Cleaning the canopy and plenum sorts it.

School and staff canteen kitchens

In a school or workplace canteen, the canopy is often the only part of the extract staff ever see. The canopy and plenum are both cleaned, so what’s out of sight is dealt with too.

What affects the quote in Jaywick

The survey tells us what the work involves. We look at:

  • What state the system is in
  • The scale of the work
  • Travel, parking and unloading
  • A single visit or a regular plan

Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Problems in a system tend to grow, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you are unsure, call 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will give you an honest view and a fixed quote.

Helping us quote

When you contact us, these details help:

  • How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
  • Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
  • Wide pictures of the system and the area around it
  • Any access panels or hatches you can see

Quotes are quick. Send a few details and photos, and we typically reply with a fixed quote within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.

How the visit works

The first job on site is protection: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. Then we make the system safe and start. It takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. In a smaller place like Jaywick, parking is rarely the issue, but tell us about gates, roof access and opening hours.

  1. The canopy is checked from pictures or on a visit.
  2. Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
  3. We lift out the filters and scrape the plenum and housing.
  4. The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
  5. We put the filters back, tidy up and photograph the finished canopy.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
  • Arrange a key holder or contact on site
  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids

Get a fixed quote

The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and we can price many jobs without a visit.

Advice

For landlords and multi-site operators

Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Every visit ends with a dated report and photos, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.

Managing agents often deal with us directly. Send the address, what’s needed and how access works and we’ll come back with a fixed quote.
