How we handle canopy cleaning in Hempton

Duct Doctor has cleaned canopies and hoods since 2009. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’re fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. Typical jobs include a sticky, discoloured canopy and a filter housing caked in grease, on plenum chambers, baffle filters and island canopies.

Somewhere as small as Hempton, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease.

Insurers, fire officers and environmental health officers all look at records. That’s why every job is written up in a report with photos, plus a TR19® certificate through the BESCA VHE portal where the work is a TR19® Grease clean.

Hempton questions

Do you do school kitchen extract cleaning in Hempton in the summer holidays?

Yes, holiday work suits schools best. Around Hempton, the Food Standards Agency lists about 2 schools and colleges with registered kitchens within a mile and a half or so. Tell us your holiday dates and we will book the visit for when the site is empty.

Will you come out to Hempton?

Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and Hempton is covered. A survey first, from pictures or a visit, means we arrive with the right kit.

Is TR19 a legal requirement?

No. The law sets the duty, and TR19® is the recognised benchmark for meeting it. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person has to manage fire risk, and many insurers can refuse or reduce a claim without proof of cleaning.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes. Every job is surveyed first, either from photos and details you send or on a site visit. A fixed quote follows.

Will we have to shut during the visit?

Not normally. We work when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends, so the site can carry on as normal.

What about areas you cannot get to?

Anything we can’t reach goes on the report, with a note of where it is, and we tell you what would make it reachable, for example new access panels.

What causes grease to drip from the hood?

Grease that builds up inside the canopy has to go somewhere. When the gutters fill, it overflows onto the range, often mixed with condensation. A thorough clean stops it.

How do you protect the area?

We cover floors and nearby surfaces with sheeting before work begins, and waste is contained as we go. Before we leave, we tidy up and clean down.

Multi-site and managed buildings

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.

From a single site to a large estate, the standard is the same: the system surveyed, the price fixed, the visit fitted around trading and everything written up afterwards.

What we do, step by step

Night work is normal for us. A lot of visits happen overnight or at weekends, so a kitchen or building can carry on as usual the next day. The visit itself takes a few hours for most canopies. If you can send pictures, we can arrive in Hempton knowing what to expect.

  1. We look at the canopy, filters and troughs first.
  2. Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
  3. With the filters removed, the plenum and filter channels are cleaned.
  4. The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
  5. Filters are refitted, the area cleaned down and the photo report put together.

Before we arrive

  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet

Getting a quote

For a fixed quote, call 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. A few photos and your last certificate or report help a lot. You will typically have a quote within one working day.

Canopy cleaning in Hempton: the local picture

The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 3 restaurants, cafés and works canteens in Hempton and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Every kitchen among them that cooks under a canopy has a hood, plenum and filters collecting grease. Environmental health officers from Cherwell council inspect food businesses in Hempton. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises.

Older buildings often hide long, awkward duct runs, and if you run a kitchen at a historic venue in the area (Broughton Castle is about 4.3 miles north-west), access may need planning. Where a hall near Saint John the Evangelist, or anywhere in Hempton, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does. Between visits

Think of this as the after-treatment advice, short and simple:

  • Run the extract the whole time you’re cooking
  • Clean the baffle filters often
  • Refit filters the right way round and fully seated
  • Don’t scrape the canopy with metal tools

We recommend when the canopy, or the whole system, should next be cleaned. That date is based on your cooking hours and what we found, in line with BESA guidance.

Clean filters are the canopy’s first defence. Wash or exchange them regularly, and never cook with one missing. Less grease gets into the plenum as a result.

What canopy cleaning can’t fix

In fairness, some problems need a different fix:

  • Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy
  • Electrical faults in the canopy
  • Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor

Not sure which it is? You can ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we will tell you honestly before you book.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

A few tasks are always specialist work: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.

Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.

Why act early in Hempton

Baked-on grease gets harder to shift the longer it stays. Over months, the heat hardens it into a stubborn coating, so the longer it’s left, the longer the clean takes. In a place like Hempton, ductwork and fans are easy to forget until something goes wrong.

What you pay depends on the size of the system, the condition it’s in and access to every part of it. You get a fixed price before we start, so you know where you stand.

Part by part

Pub and hotel kitchens

In pubs and hotels, the kitchen may be busy for much of the day. Long hours mean the canopy collects grease fast, and canopy cleans between full cleans can help.

Wall canopies

Long wall canopies often have several filter banks. We work along the canopy section by section, with photos for each.
