Canopy cleaning for sites in Harbledown

What staff can safely do

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but they don’t reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.

About our canopy cleaning in Harbledown

We have been cleaning kitchen canopies since we started trading in 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we are fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. If you have a sticky, discoloured canopy and grease dripping from the canopy edge, we can put it right.

In a village or hamlet like Harbledown, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are normally a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease, whatever the size of the place.

It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

Aftercare tips

No system stays clean for ever, but care slows the build-up. Our tips:

  • Run the extract the whole time you are cooking
  • Give the canopy a wipe after service
  • Check filters aren’t leaving gaps
  • Keep grease cups and drawers emptied

The report gives a recommended next clean date. That date is based on your cooking hours and what we found, in line with BESA guidance.

Keep the fan running throughout service and for a short while after. Turning the fan off early lets vapour settle on the hood.

What we’re called out for in Harbledown

The plenum is hidden behind the filters, so nobody sees it build up. Kitchen staff clean what they can see, so the plenum often carries months of grease.

Keep an eye out for these warning signs:

  • A canopy that no longer draws the smoke away
  • Condensation and grease dripping together
  • Canopy gutters full of old fat
  • Drips from the canopy onto the range

Healthcare kitchens can’t easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Harbledown is Eastbridge Hospital of St Thomas the Martyr, about 0.9 miles east.

How to choose an extract cleaning contractor

Questions from Harbledown

Who carries out food hygiene inspections in Harbledown?

The local authority for Harbledown is Canterbury City council, and its environmental health team does the inspecting. It helps to keep the extract cleaning records with your food safety paperwork, so they’re ready if asked for.

Will you come out to Harbledown?

Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Harbledown included. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

What accreditations do you have?

We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.

What causes grease to drip from the hood?

A full trough, gaps around the filters or a coated plenum. We clean all three and point out anything that’s causing it.

Who is the responsible person?

In the words of the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person. It’s normally the employer, or whoever controls the building, and where several people have control, each can have duties. If you’re not sure, check your lease and fire risk assessment.

How far ahead should we book?

It depends on the time you need and how big the job is. Mention your preferred dates with your enquiry, and for anything urgent, ring our 24/7 emergency line.

Will we have to shut during the visit?

Typically not. Booking the work out of hours means the site can carry on as normal. Bigger sites can be done in stages to keep things running.

Can we book visits on a schedule?

Yes. We run scheduled maintenance contracts, set at the interval the system needs. The report from each visit recommends the next date.

What the work involves, part by part

Island canopies

An island canopy is open on all sides, so every face can collect grease. Each face is cleaned inside and out.

Grease troughs and gutters

A blocked or full trough is the usual cause of grease dripping from the canopy. We clean it out so the grease has somewhere to go.

When it’s something else

We’d rather tell you now than book work that will not help, so here are the limits:

  • Faulty canopy lights or wiring (a job for an electrician)
  • Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor
  • Bent or broken filters

If you are not sure, just ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Grease gutters
  • Baffle filters
  • Wall canopies
  • Plenum chambers
  • Island canopies
  • Canopy light fittings

What happens on the day

The visit has three parts: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, and the sign-off is a written report with photos. Most of the time goes on the work itself, which takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. In a small place like Harbledown, the journey is planned ahead and the visit arranged around the site’s hours.

  1. We look at the canopy, filters and troughs first.
  2. Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
  3. With the filters removed, the plenum and filter channels are cleaned.
  4. Inside and out, the hood and its troughs are cleaned.
  5. We put the filters back, tidy up and photograph the finished canopy.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Arrange a key holder or contact on site
  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
  • Clear the space around the work

How we price canopy cleaning

The quote reflects the site in front of us. We consider:

  • Travel, parking and unloading
  • How many systems or sites are involved
  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • The scale of the work

You won’t find a price list here, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. Call for a fixed quote, and we’ll talk you through it.

What to send for a quote

Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Send what you can of the following:

  • Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet
  • The site address and the type of premises

To help us quote: where the site is, what it is and its opening hours, pictures of the system and any previous report or certificate. Once you have those, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form.

What canopy cleaning looks like in Harbledown

The Food Standards Agency lists about 54 pubs, bars and clubs and about 14 hotels and B&Bs as registered food businesses in Harbledown and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Wherever they cook, the canopy, duct and fan collect grease just as a restaurant’s do. Kent Fire and Rescue Service covers Harbledown. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises. Kitchens in Harbledown get their food hygiene inspections from Canterbury City council. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked.

For schools such as The Canterbury Primary School, kitchen extract cleaning is usually booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed. Volunteers running a hall kitchen near St Michael and All Angels Church, or anywhere in Harbledown, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.
