FAQs for Flete
Is canopy cleaning any different in a coastal place like Flete?
It can. Being within about 2 miles of the sea means more corrosion on metalwork in Flete than inland. Rooftop fans, discharge cowls and fixings are checked for corrosion as well as grease.
Do you clean school canteen extracts around Flete out of term?
Yes. The holidays are the usual time for school work. The FSA’s register shows about 12 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of Flete. Tell us your holiday dates and we will book the visit for when the site is empty.
What types of premises do you cover?
We work for restaurants, pubs, hotels, schools, colleges, hospitals, care homes, offices and shops, plus food production and leisure sites.
How long does canopy cleaning take?
That depends on the size of the canopy and how much grease is on it. As a guide, it takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several.
What accreditations do you have?
We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.
Is TR19 a legal requirement?
Not in itself. Insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to TR19® as the benchmark, and many insurers ask for proof of cleaning to it. The law behind it is the Fire Safety Order 2005, which applies in England and Wales.
What do you need from me for a quote?
A short description and a few pictures, with the address and opening hours. If we need more, we will ask.
Do you offer emergency callouts?
Yes, 24/7. Our office is open from 8am to 6pm on weekdays, with the emergency line covering every other hour.
Canopy cleaning in Flete, done properly
Every TR19® Grease clean includes the canopy, but a canopy can also need cleaning on its own, between full system cleans. Where that is the case, we will be clear that the ducts and fan are not included, so your records stay accurate. The work covers plenum chambers, island canopies and wall canopies, and people most often call us about heavy deposits behind the grease filters and a sticky, discoloured canopy.
Somewhere as small as Flete, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease, whatever the size of the place.
We have been trading since 2009, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.

Different parts, different methods
Grease troughs and gutters
A blocked or full trough is the usual cause of grease dripping from the canopy. We clean it out so the grease has somewhere to go.
Plenums and filter housings
A plenum that hasn’t been cleaned for a long time can hold a thick layer of grease. Heavy deposits are scraped out by hand before degreasing.
Aftercare tips
After the visit, a few habits help the work last:
- Empty the grease troughs before they fill
- Check all filters are fitted before service
- Keep filters on a set cleaning routine
- Do not scrape the canopy with metal tools
Anything worth knowing goes into the report: bent or poorly fitting filters, a light cover that’s cracked, or troughs that fill too quickly. It’s a short list of what to watch, not a sales pitch.
Empty the grease troughs and cups before they fill. Most canopy drips start with a full trough, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.
The process
The visit has three parts: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, and the sign-off is a written report with pictures. Most of the time goes on the work itself, which takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. Photos of the system and how to reach it help us plan a visit to Flete.
- We start by checking the canopy and what’s behind its filters.
- Equipment is turned off and cooled, and the area under the canopy is protected.
- Thick grease is scraped away before the canopy is degreased.
- Plenum, housing, troughs and canopy are all cleaned and checked.
- You get pictures of the result and a recommended date for the next clean.
Preparing for the visit
- Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
- Mention any parking or loading restrictions
- Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
Getting a quote
We do not publish a price list, because no two systems are the same. Instead, we look at your site first, from pictures or a survey, then send a fixed quote. To get going, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email.

What your team can do, and what needs us
For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.
Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, and that is where we come in.
Kitchen extracts in Flete
Sea air reaches Flete, which sits within about 2 miles of the coast. Metal on the roof weathers faster close to the coast, and the extract fan and cowl are no exception. Where they serve hot food, their kitchen extracts need cleaning to TR19® like any restaurant’s. Kent Fire and Rescue Service covers Flete. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises.

What we are called out for in Flete
Grease that runs down the inside of a canopy gathers in its gutters and troughs. If they’re not emptied, they fill and overflow, and grease ends up dripping from the canopy edge.
It’s time to book a visit if you see:
- Drips from the canopy onto the range
- Wet, greasy drips from the hood
- A filter housing caked in grease
- An EHO comment about the canopy
A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near St. Catherine's Church or elsewhere in Flete, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.
Questions to ask before booking
- Whether they recommend a next date
- Proof of accreditation you can verify
- Whether a written report and pictures are included
- Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach
Multi-site and managed buildings
We regularly work with managing agents. Send the address, what’s needed and how access works, and we will send a fixed quote.
For anyone managing more than one site, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Each site gets its own report and pictures, so records stay tidy.
What affects the quote in Flete
Before we fix a price, we need to know a few things. We check:
- The number of sites or systems
- The times the site is available
- Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
- Any permits to work or inductions
Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Call for a fixed quote and we’ll explain each part.
