About our canopy cleaning in East Molesey

Duct Doctor has cleaned canopies and hoods since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. We are often asked to deal with a sticky, discoloured canopy and filters that never seem to stay clean, on wall canopies, grease gutters and plenum chambers.

Around a smaller place like East Molesey, kitchen extracts tend to belong to pubs, cafés, takeaways and school or care home kitchens. A kitchen that cooks fewer hours still builds up grease, so the interval is set by hours of use and grease readings.

We have been trading since 2009, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.

What affects the cost of canopy cleaning

Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. What affects the quote:

  • The condition of the system
  • How big the system is
  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • A single visit or a regular plan

What you pay reflects the actual work. That’s why we survey first, from photos or on site, and the price is agreed before any work starts.

Asking for a quote

Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Useful things to send:

  • The site address and the type of premises
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it

Quotes are quick. Call or email with a few details and you’ll normally have a fixed price within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.

For landlords and multi-site operators

Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We cover South East England and London, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept to a regular schedule.

We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements and we will come back with a fixed quote.

Questions from East Molesey

Will you come out to East Molesey?

Yes. East Molesey is within the area we cover across London and the South East. The journey is planned ahead, so a few details about the route help.

Who inspects food businesses in East Molesey?

The local authority for East Molesey is Elmbridge council, and its environmental health team does the inspecting. It helps to keep the extract cleaning records with your food safety paperwork, so they’re ready if asked for.

What is TR19?

TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes, day and night, every day of the year. Our office is open from 8am to 6pm on weekdays, and the emergency line covers the rest.

Does the law say we must follow TR19?

Not in itself. TR19® is the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs check against, and many insurance policies ask for proof of TR19® cleaning. The legal duty sits in the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which applies in England and Wales.

What causes grease to drip from the hood?

Full gutters and a heavily coated plenum are the common causes. Grease has nowhere else to go, so it runs down and drips, and condensation can carry it too. A canopy clean sorts it out.

What if parts of the system can’t be reached?

They’re listed in the report, never skipped quietly. The report says which parts couldn’t be reached and why, along with a quote to put access in.

How do you keep the site clean during the work?

We start with protection: sheeting over floors, worktops and anything close to the work. The area is left tidy, with our waste taken away.

Grease, kitchens and East Molesey

According to Food Standards Agency records, there are about 24 pubs and bars within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of East Molesey. Wherever they cook, the canopy, duct and fan collect grease just as a restaurant’s do. The fire and rescue service for East Molesey is Surrey Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract. Kitchens in East Molesey get their food hygiene inspections from Elmbridge council. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after.

Where a hall near Church of St Mary, or anywhere in East Molesey, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does. Bursars and site managers at schools such as The Orchard Infant School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.

Looking after it afterwards

Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it helps at the next visit:

  • Run the extract the whole time you are cooking
  • Refit filters the right way round and fully seated
  • Wash or exchange the filters on a regular cycle
  • Never run the range with a filter out

We point out anything we noticed while the canopy was apart: bent or poorly fitting filters, a light cover that is cracked, or troughs that fill too quickly. It’s a short list of what to watch, not a sales pitch.

Wipe the canopy surfaces at the end of each day. It doesn’t reach the plenum, but it stops the outside building up.

What we’re called out for in East Molesey

Moisture in the air mixes with the grease on the canopy. Water vapour condenses on the cooler canopy surfaces and drips and runs with the grease. The result is sticky streaks and drips onto the range.

Any of these means the system needs a check-up:

  • A filter housing caked in grease
  • Poor capture at the hood
  • Grease channels that no longer drain
  • An EHO comment about the canopy

A kitchen near Hampton Court station that serves breakfast and dinner can run its extract twelve hours or more, which shortens the cleaning interval.

Our hiring checklist

What we do, step by step

Protection comes first: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. Then we make the system safe and start. It takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several, and we clear up before we go. In a smaller place like East Molesey, parking is rarely the issue, but tell us about gates, roof access and opening hours.

  1. We look at the canopy first, from pictures or on a visit.
  2. Equipment below is switched off and left to cool, then sheeted.
  3. With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned back.
  4. We degrease the canopy shell, its seams and the grease troughs.
  5. We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.

Preparing for the visit

  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions

Advice

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Logging matters as much as cleaning. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, alongside our reports.

Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that’s where we come in.

What the work involves, part by part

Pub and hotel kitchens

In pubs and hotels, the kitchen may be busy for much of the day. Long hours mean the canopy collects grease fast, so it may need cleaning between full TR19 cleans.

Island canopies

Island canopies hang over cooking in the middle of the kitchen, so every face can collect grease. Each face is cleaned inside and out.
