Canopy cleaning near Durrants

Why act early in Durrants

Leaving the canopy until the next full clean can mean months of build-up. Some kitchens need the canopy cleaning more often than the whole system, and readings or a look behind the filters will show it. It’s simpler to plan the work at Durrants now than to arrange it in a hurry later.

Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Call for a fixed quote and we will explain each part.

How we handle canopy cleaning in Durrants

Of the whole extract system, the canopy is the bit on show. Being first in line, it collects grease on the inside surfaces, along the seams and in the troughs. Our canopy clean covers the shell inside and out, plus the plenum and the filter housing. The work covers plenum chambers, canopy light fittings and grease gutters, and common reasons people get in touch are a greasy hood noticed by an inspector and canopy gutters full of old fat.

For a kitchen in or near Durrants, the visit is planned around opening hours and the journey, and the clean covers the whole system, as it would anywhere: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.

Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.

What canopy cleaning can’t fix

In fairness, some problems need a different fix:

  • A hood that doesn’t cover the cooking line
  • Filters that no longer seal in the housing
  • A fan that cannot pull enough air because it’s worn out

If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll say what we think.

What the work covers

  • Baffle filters
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Grease gutters
  • Island canopies
  • Plenum chambers
  • Wall canopies

What the work involves, part by part

Pub and hotel kitchens

Staff in pub and hotel kitchens work under the canopy all day, so drips and smells soon become a daily nuisance. Cleaning the canopy and plenum sorts it.

School and staff canteen kitchens

A canteen canopy may cook fewer hours, but it still collects grease. BESA guidance still sets a minimum interval for the whole system, and the canopy is part of it.

How the visit works

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, which is often after service, overnight or at a weekend. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool before any work starts, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. On site, it takes a few hours for most canopies. For a village or hamlet like Durrants, tell us about narrow lanes, gates and parking when you book.

  1. First the canopy is surveyed, by pictures or in person.
  2. The range is turned off and allowed to cool before we cover it.
  3. With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned back.
  4. We degrease the canopy shell, its seams and the grease troughs.
  5. Clean filters are refitted and before and after pictures go into your report.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything stored near the system
  • Let us know about parking and loading
  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms

How to get a quote

Quoting starts with a diagnosis, from your pictures and details or, where that is not enough, a survey on site. Then we send a fixed price, before any work starts.

What staff can safely do

Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.

Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease need training, the right equipment and safe access. That’s our job.

Durrants questions

Which fire service covers Durrants?

Durrants is in the area of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. TR19® isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.

Can sea air affect canopy cleaning in Durrants?

It can, as Durrants is within about 3 miles of the sea, where salt in the air is hard on metal. Corroded fixings and housings are noted on the report so they can be dealt with.

What is TR19?

TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.

Do you work in Durrants?

Yes. We work in Durrants and across Hampshire, as part of our work across South East England and London. For a fixed quote, call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.

Which kinds of sites do you work on?

All kinds of commercial and public premises: kitchens, offices, schools, healthcare, retail, leisure and food production. We fit the work around how the site operates.

What do you do with what you remove?

Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, from grease and debris to used cleaning water. We don’t leave it behind.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes. We always survey first, either from photos and details you send or on a site visit. Then you get a fixed quote.

Why does grease run off the canopy edge?

Most drips come from overflowing troughs, damaged filters or a plenum thick with grease. We clean all three and point out anything that is causing it.

Managing agents and facilities teams in Durrants

For anyone managing more than one site, we can schedule visits across all of them on one quote. Every building has its own written report, so records stay tidy.

Landlords, managing agents and facilities managers book us, not only the businesses that use the systems. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we can quote for the whole system.

What affects the cost of canopy cleaning

Before we fix a price, we need to know a few things. We check:

  • How big the system is
  • Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
  • Parking and loading at the site
  • Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule

You won’t find a price list here, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed quote, and we will talk you through it.

Asking for a quote

Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Send what you can of the following:

  • The site address and the type of premises
  • A few general shots of the system
  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and we can price many jobs without a visit.

What canopy cleaning looks like in Durrants

Sea air reaches Durrants, which sits within about 3 miles of the coast. Near the sea, the fan and discharge at the top of a kitchen extract corrode faster than they would inland. Food Standards Agency records list about 14 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 20 takeaways and sandwich shops in Durrants and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Where they cook under a hood, the plenum behind the filters is where grease hides. Durrants sits within the area of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.

A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near St John the Baptist or elsewhere in Durrants, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often. A hospital like Havant War Memorial Hospital, about 2 miles south-west, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day. Bursars and site managers at schools such as Havant Academy tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.

Durrants is about 2 miles north-east of Havant, in Hampshire. Wherever you are in the PO9 postcode area, we cover canopy cleaning for commercial sites. We cover 683 places across Hampshire, from busy centres to quieter spots. We also work in Portsmouth, around 7 miles away.

Work in PO9 is surveyed, quoted and booked the same way as anywhere else. Local streets include Whichers Close, Whichers Gate Road and Durrants Road, all of which we cover for canopy cleaning. Close by, we work in Rowlands Castle (1 mile north), Leigh Park (1 mile south-west), Havant (2 miles south-west), Denvilles (2 miles south) and Westbourne (2 miles south-east). Within a short drive, we also cover Gosport (10 miles south-west), Fareham (10 miles west), Horndean (3 miles north-west), Hedge End (15 miles west), Waterlooville (3 miles west) and Petersfield (9 miles north).
