Landlords, agents and facilities managers
Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Every visit ends with a dated report and photos, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.
Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We’re happy to deal with either side, and the report can go to both.
How we handle canopy cleaning in Doddinghurst
The canopy is where the extract system breathes in. A dirty canopy passes more grease further into the system. Our diagnosis starts there, and the treatment is a thorough degrease of the hood, plenum and housing. If you have a plenum thick with grease behind the filters and an EHO comment about the canopy, we can put it right.
In a village or hamlet like Doddinghurst, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are normally a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease, whatever the size of the place.
Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a dated report with photos of the work, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

Canopy cleaning around Doddinghurst
Food Standards Agency records list about 3 restaurants, cafés and canteens within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Doddinghurst. Wherever there’s a canopy over the cooking, its hood and plenum collect grease with every service. Doddinghurst sits within the area of Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel. Kitchens in Doddinghurst get their food hygiene inspections from Brentwood council. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after.

Why it’s worth doing now in Doddinghurst
A greasy canopy is fuel directly above the flame. Flames from the range can ignite it and be pulled further into the system, where a fire is much harder to stop. A clean canopy takes that fuel away. With notice, the visit to Doddinghurst can be fitted around your bookings and events.
When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is can all change the price. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before we start.

The process
There are three stages on the day: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, and the sign-off is a written report with pictures. Most of the time goes on the work itself, which takes a few hours for most canopies. If you can send pictures, we can arrive in Doddinghurst knowing what to expect.
- We look at the canopy first, from pictures or on a visit.
- Equipment below is switched off and left to cool, then sheeted.
- Filters come out and the plenum behind them is scraped and degreased.
- Inside and out, the canopy and its grease channels are degreased.
- Clean filters are refitted and before and after pictures go into your report.
Getting ready for the visit
- Find the previous report, if there is one
- Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
- Mention any parking or loading restrictions
Ask for a quote
Some systems can be priced from pictures; others need a survey. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.

Honest limits
We will always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what this work can’t put right:
- Faulty canopy lights or wiring (a job for an electrician)
- A canopy undersized for the equipment
- Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor
If in doubt, call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll say what we think.

What staff can safely do
A few tasks are always specialist work: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. That is our job.
Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they cannot safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that’s where we come in.
Common problems we fix in Doddinghurst
The plenum is hidden behind the filters, so nobody sees it build up. Kitchen staff clean what they can see, leaving the plenum and housing to collect grease between professional cleans.
The symptoms we are asked about most include:
- A filter housing caked in grease
- Condensation running down the canopy
- Filters that clog soon after cleaning
- Fat running down the front of the hood
If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Doddinghurst Infant School or anywhere near Doddinghurst, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean.

Your questions about canopy cleaning in Doddinghurst
Which fire authority looks after Doddinghurst?
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Doddinghurst. TR19® isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.
Can you get to a site in Doddinghurst?
Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and Doddinghurst is covered. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.
What about areas you can’t get to?
The report shows them clearly. In ductwork, new access panels are often the answer, and we can fit those.
What’s TR19?
A BESA specification, with two parts that matter most here: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It isn’t legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.
Is TR19 a legal requirement?
No. TR19® is BESA’s specification, not legislation. The law is the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which makes the responsible person assess and reduce fire risk, and cleaning to TR19® is the recognised way to show grease is under control.
When do you clean the canopy?
We clean when the kitchen is closed: after service, overnight or before opening. The range must be switched off and cooled first.
What types of premises do you cover?
All kinds of commercial and public premises: kitchens, offices, schools, healthcare, retail, leisure and food production. Work is timed around how each site runs.
How much of the canopy do you clean?
Inside and out, along with its seams and grease channels. The plenum and filter housing behind the filters are cleaned too.
Fixed quotes for canopy cleaning in Doddinghurst
There’s no set price list, because no two systems are the same. What we look at:
- Whether several sites go on one quote
- The condition we find in the survey
- The times the site is available
- Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
What you pay depends on the size of the system, what state it’s in and access to every part of it. You get a fixed price before we start, so you know where you stand.
What to send for a quote
There’s no need for technical detail. It helps if you can send:
- The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
- When the site is open and when it’s quiet
- Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
- A few general shots of the system
Quotes are quick. Call or email with a few details and you’ll typically have a fixed price within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.
