Canopy cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Cranleigh

The canopy is the part of the extract everyone in the kitchen sees. Being first in line, it collects grease on the inside surfaces, along the seams and in the troughs. We clean it inside and out, along with the plenum and filter housing behind it. If you have a hood coated in old grease and a greasy hood noticed by an inspector, we can help, from canopy light fittings, grease gutters and island canopies onwards.

Size does not change the work: a kitchen in a place like Cranleigh gets the whole system cleaned, canopy to discharge. We plan the visit around your hours, with the journey sorted in advance.

Insurers, fire officers and environmental health officers all look at records. That’s why every job is written up in a report with pictures, and grease extract cleans come with a TR19® certificate issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Grease, kitchens and Cranleigh

Look up Cranleigh on the FSA’s food hygiene register and you’ll find about 19 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 6 sandwich bars and takeaways in Cranleigh and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Every kitchen among them that cooks under a canopy has a hood, plenum and filters collecting grease. In Cranleigh, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Waverley council. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready. The fire and rescue service for Cranleigh is Surrey Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel.

Bursars and site managers at schools such as St Cuthbert Mayne Catholic Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.

How it works

Your staff do not need to do much on the day. A contact on site lets us in at the agreed time and points us to the system, and we take it from there. Afterwards, the area is left tidy and the written report follows. Because the survey comes first, a visit to Cranleigh can usually be finished without a second trip.

  1. We start by checking the canopy, filters and plenum.
  2. The range is turned off and allowed to cool before we cover it.
  3. With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned back.
  4. Inside and out, the canopy and its grease channels are degreased.
  5. We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.

Keeping the system healthy

How long the results last depends on use and care. We suggest:

  • Wash or exchange the filters on a regular cycle
  • Empty the grease troughs before they fill
  • Check filters aren’t leaving gaps
  • Avoid harsh scourers that scratch the canopy

We point out anything we noticed while the canopy was apart: bent or poorly fitting filters, a light cover that’s cracked, or troughs that fill too quickly. We keep it to what matters.

Keep the fan running throughout service and for a short while after. Air that keeps moving carries less grease onto the canopy.

What the work involves, part by part

Grease troughs and gutters

Grease channels around the canopy collect what runs down the inside. We empty and degrease them, so they can do their job again.

Wall canopies

The back of a wall canopy is hard to reach and easy to miss. We remove the filters to reach it and scrape it clean.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.

Why act early in Cranleigh

Grease dripping from the hood can fall onto food, pans and worktops. That’s a hygiene problem as well as a fire one, and environmental health officers look at the cleanliness of equipment, extraction included. Booking ahead lets us plan the trip to Cranleigh at a time that suits you.

Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Call for a fixed quote and we’ll go through it with you.

Common questions in Cranleigh

Is Cranleigh within the area you cover?

Yes, Cranleigh is part of our area, however small the site. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Can you clean school kitchen extracts in Cranleigh during the holidays?

Yes. Half-terms and the summer break are the natural time for school work. Food Standards Agency records list about 4 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of Cranleigh. Just call 0345 646 2711, or email photos with your term dates and we will plan around them.

How do you protect the area?

Protection goes down first: sheeting over floors, worktops and anything close to the work. We tidy up and take our waste away before we leave.

Which sectors do you work in?

Any site with a kitchen or a ventilation system to look after, from a small pub to a hospital. Hotels, schools, care homes, offices, shops and leisure sites are all part of our work.

Are you fully insured?

Yes. We carry full insurance, and we have been trading since 2009.

How much of the canopy do you clean?

We clean the canopy inside and out, along with its seams and grease channels. With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned as well.

Why is my canopy dripping grease?

Typically because the troughs or gutters are full, or the plenum is overloaded. Grease has nowhere else to go, so it runs down and drips, and condensation can carry it too. A canopy clean sorts it out.

Do you clean canopies in all kinds of kitchens?

Wall and island canopies, long cooking-line hoods and small single hoods. The method is the same: filters out, plenum and housing cleaned, canopy degreased inside and out.

How we price canopy cleaning

The diagnosis comes before the price. We look at:

  • A single visit or a regular plan
  • The scale of the work
  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • How many systems or sites are involved

Putting the work off seldom saves money. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, which can make the next visit longer. If you are unsure, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form for straight advice and a fixed quote.

Helping us quote

A few details help us quote accurately. With your enquiry, please include:

  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is
  • Wide photos of the system and the area around it
  • The times we could work without disrupting the site

Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in pictures, get a survey first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.

Signs you need canopy cleaning in Cranleigh

Air straight off the range hits the canopy first. Grease from the vapour lands on the canopy’s inner surfaces, its joints and its filters before what gets through reaches the plenum.

Any of these means the system needs a check-up:

  • Grease filters blocking between washes
  • A greasy hood noticed by an inspector
  • Grease dripping from the canopy edge
  • Wet, greasy drips from the hood

Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Church of St Nicholas, or anywhere in Cranleigh, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.

Questions to ask before booking

  • What insurance they carry
  • Proof of accreditation you can verify
  • How VAT is shown on the quote
  • Whether a written report and pictures are included
