How we price canopy cleaning

The quote reflects the site in front of us. We consider:

  • Whether several sites go on one quote
  • Site rules, permits and inductions
  • Travel, parking and unloading
  • The scale of the work

Several systems or sites on one quote often makes better use of the time. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at, and you’ll get one fixed quote.

What to send for a quote

To help us quote quickly, send us:

  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
  • Any previous report or certificate
  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet

To get a fixed quote, ring 0345 646 2711 or email us and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. A few pictures and your last certificate or report help a lot. We normally come back within one working day.

Canopy cleaning in Cowesfield Gate, done properly

Of the whole extract system, the canopy is the bit on show. Being first in line, it collects grease on the inside surfaces, along the seams and in the troughs. We clean it inside and out, along with the plenum and filter housing behind it. The work covers plenum chambers, grease gutters and wall canopies, and common reasons people get in touch are greasy streaks across the canopy and a greasy hood noticed by an inspector.

Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, where grease settles in the flat sections. Access, parking and timings are agreed before the day.

Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.

Why deal with it now?

A blocked plenum and clogged filters cut the airflow at the canopy. Smoke and heat hang around the cooking line, and the fan works harder for less. Cleaning restores the path the air should take. It’s worth booking a check, because nobody sees inside a duct day to day.

Working hours, access and the scale of the site can all change the price. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before we start.

The process

Our technicians bring everything the work needs, from protective sheeting to tools and access equipment. You only need to give us clear access and switch off what needs to be off. On site, the work takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. We agree a date with you, plan the drive to Cowesfield Gate and turn up when the site is quiet.

  1. The canopy is checked from photos or on a visit.
  2. Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
  3. We lift out the filters and scrape the plenum and housing.
  4. The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
  5. Filters are refitted, the area cleaned down and the photo report put together.

Preparing for the visit

  • Let us know about parking and loading
  • Have your last certificate or report to hand
  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive

Advice

Managing agents and facilities teams in Cowesfield Gate

We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements and we will come back with a fixed quote.

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.

What canopy cleaning looks like in Cowesfield Gate

Fire safety in Cowesfield Gate falls to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk. Food hygiene inspections in Cowesfield Gate are the job of Test Valley council’s environmental health team. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector.

If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Romsey Community Hospital about 5.7 miles east, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.

Cowesfield Gate is about 6 miles west of Romsey, in Hampshire. Whatever kind of site you run in Cowesfield Gate, canopy cleaning is something we can help with. When something else is needed

In fairness, there are a few things this work won’t fix:

  • A light fitting that does not work
  • Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy
  • Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)

Not sure which it is? You can give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll tell you honestly.

What the work covers

  • Canopy light fittings
  • Island canopies
  • Wall canopies
  • Baffle filters
  • Grease gutters
  • Plenum chambers

Looking after it afterwards

After the visit, a few habits help the work last:

  • Report new drips or smells from the canopy
  • Use non-abrasive cloths on the hood
  • Wash or exchange the filters on a regular cycle
  • Run the extract the whole time you are cooking

Where the canopy is cleaned as part of a full TR19® Grease clean, a TR19 certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. Where only the canopy is done, the report says so clearly.

A change in how the canopy behaves is worth reporting. More drips or quicker clogging often mean the cleaning interval needs looking at, which a grease thickness test can confirm.

When to call us in Cowesfield Gate

Steam and condensation make canopy grease harder to deal with. Water vapour condenses on the cooler canopy surfaces and drips and runs with the grease. Drips onto the cooking line are a common result.

If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:

  • Fat running down the front of the hood
  • Filters that clog soon after cleaning
  • Wet, greasy drips from the hood
  • Canopy gutters full of old fat

Older buildings often hide long, awkward duct runs, and if you run a kitchen at a historic venue in the area (Landford Manor is about 2.3 miles south), access may need planning.

Common questions in Cowesfield Gate

Can the work in Cowesfield Gate be done at night or at weekends?

Yes. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends. That way a site in Cowesfield Gate does not have to lose a day’s trading. Your opening times are the first thing we ask for.

Which council inspects kitchens in Cowesfield Gate?

In Cowesfield Gate, it’s Test Valley council that carries out food hygiene inspections. An officer may look up into the canopy, so clean filters on the day and a recent certificate on file both help.

Do you work with multi-site operators?

Yes. Our area covers London and the South East, so sites at different addresses can be planned together on one programme. Every site has its own report.

What causes grease to drip from the hood?

A full trough, gaps around the filters or a coated plenum. We clean the canopy, plenum and troughs and tell you what we find.

Does the law say we must follow TR19?

No. TR19® is BESA’s specification, not legislation. The law is the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which makes the responsible person assess and reduce fire risk, and TR19® is the benchmark for showing that grease in the extract is under control.

Do you clean canopies in all kinds of kitchens?

Single hoods, long wall canopies and island canopies alike. We work out the approach when we survey, from pictures or a visit.

How much does canopy cleaning cost?

It depends on the site, so we quote each one individually. For a quote, call 0345 646 2711, or send details by email with the site type, opening hours and a few pictures.

How long will it take to clean the canopy?

That depends on the size of the canopy and how much grease is on it. Typically it takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several.
