Canopy cleaning across Chenies

Canopy cleaning in Chenies, done properly

Canopy cleans are done out of hours: evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. Cooking equipment is turned off and cooled, then covered so the kitchen is ready when we go. If you are dealing with drips from the canopy onto the range and a plenum thick with grease behind the filters, we can put it right, from wall canopies, canopy light fittings and island canopies onwards.

Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, where grease settles in the flat sections. We agree access and timings in advance.

Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.

What canopy cleaning can’t fix

We’d rather tell you now than book work that will not help, so these are the things it will not cover:

  • A canopy undersized for the equipment
  • Ductwork and fans beyond the canopy (those need a full TR19 clean)
  • Poor airflow from a fan that needs repair

Not sure which it is? You can give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll tell you honestly.

What we’re called out for in Chenies

Grease that runs down the inside of a canopy gathers in its gutters and troughs. If they’re not emptied, they fill and overflow, so fat ends up running down the front of the hood.

Most sites get in touch after spotting one of these:

  • Fat running down the front of the hood
  • Smoke hanging around the canopy during service
  • Condensation and grease dripping together
  • Grease filters blocking between washes

Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Amersham Hospital is the nearest hospital to Chenies, about 4 miles west.

What your quote should include

  • When they can work, and whether that is outside your opening hours
  • Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
  • Proof of insurance
  • What happens if part of the system cannot be accessed

How to choose an extract cleaning contractor

Kitchen extracts in Chenies

The FSA’s data shows about 3 pubs and bars registered within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Chenies. A pub or hotel kitchen that cooks every day builds up grease in its extract like any other. It’s Buckinghamshire council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Chenies. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. The fire and rescue service for Chenies is Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.

School kitchens, at schools like Chenies School for example, are typically cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost. Historic houses near Chenies, such as Chenies Manor House about 0.2 miles south, are a reminder that older buildings with event kitchens can have long, awkward duct routes.

Looking after it afterwards

How long the results last depends on use and care. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Check and empty canopy gutters regularly
  • Clean the baffle filters often
  • Make sure filters sit tight in the housing
  • Report new drips or smells from the canopy

A before and after photo report follows the clean. It notes what was cleaned and anything we couldn’t reach, so the record is honest and complete.

Wipe the canopy surfaces at the end of each day. It does not reach the plenum, but it stops the outside building up.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit produces a dated report with photos, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.

We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare across Hertfordshire. Larger estates can be phased building by building to keep disruption down.

Why deal with it now?

Fresh grease comes off far more easily than old. Over months, the heat hardens it into a stubborn coating, so the longer it’s left, the longer the clean takes. It’s worth booking a check, because nobody sees inside a duct day to day.

Putting the work off seldom saves money. Problems in a system tend to grow, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you are not sure what’s needed, call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll give you an honest view and a fixed quote.

How the visit works

Protection comes first: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. The work on site takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up, and we clear up before we go. A few photos of the system help us make the most of a visit to a place like Chenies.

  1. We look at the canopy, filters and troughs first.
  2. Out of hours, the range is switched off, cooled and covered.
  3. With the filters removed, the plenum and filter channels are cleaned.
  4. The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
  5. We put the filters back, tidy up and photograph the finished canopy.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Have your last certificate or report to hand
  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet

What the work involves, part by part

Grease troughs and gutters

Drips from the canopy edge often start in a full gutter. Cleaning it clears the drip.

Wall canopies

A wall-mounted canopy runs along the back of the range. The joint between canopy and wall is a common grease trap, and we clean that join along with the inside of the hood.
