Canopy cleaning in Burton End

Do you need canopy cleaning in Burton End?

Any canopy in Burton End that is used for cooking will gather grease in the end. That grease is fuel sitting right above the heat, so a flare-up near a greasy hood can quickly become a fire.

Look out for these warning signs:

  • Poor capture at the hood
  • Condensation running down the canopy
  • Grease filters blocking between washes
  • A hood coated in old grease

Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Herts and Essex Hospital is the nearest hospital to Burton End, about 2.5 miles south-west.

Questions to ask before you book

  • What records you’ll receive afterwards
  • Exactly which parts of the system are covered
  • Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report
  • Whether a survey comes first

Our hiring checklist

Canopy cleaning in Burton End

Think of the canopy as the mouth of the extract. A dirty canopy passes more grease further into the system. We start the check-up there, and the treatment is a thorough degrease of the hood, plenum and housing. The work covers island canopies, baffle filters and plenum chambers, and common reasons people get in touch are a canopy that no longer draws the smoke away and a canopy flagged at an environmental health inspection.

Somewhere as small as Burton End, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease, whatever the size of the place.

Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

How it works

Your trading hours come first. Most visits are booked for when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. Once we’re in, the area is sheeted and anything that has to be off is turned off and cooled, and the work takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. Somewhere like Burton End, lanes, gates and parking are worth mentioning in advance.

  1. Diagnosis first: we look behind the filters as well as at the hood.
  2. Equipment is turned off and cooled, and the area under the canopy is protected.
  3. Heavy deposits come off by hand, then the surfaces are degreased.
  4. Plenum, housing, troughs and canopy are all cleaned and checked.
  5. You get photos of the result and a recommended date for the next clean.

How to prepare

  • Let us know about parking and loading
  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
  • Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend

Get a fixed quote

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

Advice

Burton End questions

Can you get to a site in Burton End?

Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Burton End included. A survey first, from pictures or a visit, means we arrive with the right kit.

Which fire authority looks after Burton End?

That’s Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. If a fire safety officer visits a commercial kitchen, they may ask about the fire risk assessment and how the extract is kept clean.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes. For many sites, pictures and a few details are enough, and larger or hidden systems get a visit.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes. For anything urgent, such as a fan failure or damage after a fire, ring the 24/7 line, and we’ll advise on what to do next.

What paperwork do I get after a canopy clean?

A photo report shows the canopy and plenum before and after. Full system cleans also come with a TR19 certificate.

What happens to the waste?

We contain it and take it with us. We collect grease, debris and waste water as we go rather than letting it spread.

How long will it take to clean the canopy?

Allow an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. We will confirm how long when we quote.

What accreditations do you have?

We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we’re fully insured.

When something else is needed

An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what canopy cleaning won’t do:

  • Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy
  • A canopy undersized for the equipment
  • Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)

If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll say what we think before booking.

Kitchen extracts in Burton End

According to Food Standards Agency records, there are about 9 bars, pubs and nightclubs and about 4 hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in Burton End and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Where they serve hot food, their kitchen extracts need cleaning to TR19® like any restaurant’s. Burton End is covered by Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel. Environmental health officers from Uttlesford council inspect food businesses in Burton End. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready.

Bursars and site managers at schools such as Forest Hall School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty. A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near St Mary the Virgin's Church or elsewhere in Burton End, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.

What happens if it’s left?

Grease dripping from the hood can fall onto food, pans and worktops. That’s a hygiene problem as well as a fire one, and EHOs look at the cleanliness of the premises and equipment. Out of sight is the usual reason a rural system goes too long without attention.

A single site or a whole portfolio, we price it on the same basis: what needs doing, how we get to it and when. You’ll have a fixed price before work begins.

Keeping the system healthy

So the system stays in good health:

  • Check all filters are fitted before service
  • Make sure filters sit tight in the housing
  • Don’t scrape the canopy with metal tools
  • Check and empty canopy gutters regularly

We point out anything we noticed while the canopy was apart: damaged filters, gaps around the housing or troughs that need emptying more often. We keep it to what matters.

Empty the grease troughs and cups before they fill. Most canopy drips start with a full trough, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.

What the work involves, part by part

Island canopies

Island canopies hang over cooking in the middle of the kitchen, so every face can collect grease. Each face is cleaned inside and out.

Pub and hotel kitchens

Staff in pub and hotel kitchens work under the canopy all day, so a dripping hood quickly becomes everyone’s problem. Cleaning the canopy and plenum sorts it.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

When your team notices a problem between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that won’t come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We will take a look and give you a fixed quote.

A few tasks are always specialist work: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.
