When it’s something else

Some problems need a different service or another trade:

  • Poor airflow from a fan that needs repair
  • A light fitting that doesn’t work
  • A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that’s a design question)

Canopy cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Bradfield

Canopy cleans are done out of hours: evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. The equipment underneath is switched off, left to cool and sheeted so the kitchen is ready when we go. The work covers wall canopies, canopy light fittings and grease gutters, and people most often call us about a plenum thick with grease behind the filters and drips from the canopy onto the range.

Work in a small place like Bradfield starts with a call to agree access and timings, and the clean covers the whole system, as it would anywhere: canopy to discharge, then a TR19® certificate and a photo report.

Insurers, fire officers and environmental health officers all look at records. So every job comes with a written report and photos, plus a TR19® certificate through the BESCA VHE portal where the work is a TR19® Grease clean.

Leave it or put it right?

Grease on the canopy is sitting just above the heat source. Flames from the range can ignite it and be pulled further into the system, where a fire is much harder to stop. A clean canopy takes that fuel away. A fault that closes a site in a village like Bradfield affects everyone who depends on it.

The cost depends on how big the system is, what state it’s in and access to every part of it. We give you a fixed price before work begins, so you know where you stand.

How the visit works

Your trading hours come first. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that is an evening, overnight or a weekend. Once we’re in, the area is sheeted and anything that has to be off is turned off and cooled, and the work takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. If the van will struggle with a lane or gateway near Bradfield, let us know and we will plan around it.

  1. First the canopy is surveyed, by photos or in person.
  2. Cooking equipment is left to cool and the area under the canopy protected.
  3. We remove the grease filters and clean the plenum and filter housing.
  4. The canopy is cleaned inside and out, including troughs and seams.
  5. Filters go back, the area is cleaned down and pictures are taken.

Preparing for the visit

  • Let us know about parking and loading
  • Arrange a key holder or contact on site
  • Move anything stored near the system

Bradfield kitchens: local notes

At about 1 mile from the coast, Bradfield is close enough for sea air to matter. Metal on the roof weathers faster close to the coast, and the extract fan and cowl are no exception. Food hygiene inspections in Bradfield are the job of Tendring council’s environmental health team. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. Bradfield sits within the area of Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel.

If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Bradfield Primary School or anywhere near Bradfield, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean. Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Church of St Lawrence, or anywhere in Bradfield, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.

What the work involves, part by part

Plenums and filter housings

Behind the grease filters is the plenum. It catches whatever gets past the filters, and it’s cleaned every time we clean the canopy.

School and staff canteen kitchens

A canteen canopy may cook fewer hours, but it still collects grease. BESA guidance still sets a minimum interval for the whole system, and the canopy is part of it.

Aftercare tips

Think of this as the after-treatment advice, short and simple:

  • Check filters are not leaving gaps
  • Avoid harsh scourers that scratch the canopy
  • Give the canopy a wipe after service
  • Tell us when the canopy starts to drip

We point out anything we noticed while the canopy was apart: bent or poorly fitting filters, a light cover that is cracked, or troughs that fill too quickly. We keep it to what matters.

The best thing a kitchen can do for its canopy is keep the filters clean. Wash or exchange them regularly, and make sure they’re all in place before cooking. The plenum behind them stays cleaner.

For landlords and multi-site operators

We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements, and we will send a fixed quote.

Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We cover South East England and London, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept to a regular schedule.

What your team can do, and what needs us

Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they cannot safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that is where we come in.

Common questions in Bradfield

Who is the fire and rescue service for Bradfield?

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Bradfield. TR19® isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.

Who inspects food businesses in Bradfield?

Kitchens in Bradfield are inspected by Tendring council’s environmental health officers. It helps to keep the extract cleaning records with your food safety paperwork, so they’re ready if asked for.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes. Every job is surveyed first, either from photos and details you send or on a site visit. Then you get a fixed quote.

Can you set up regular visits?

Yes. We run scheduled maintenance contracts, set at the interval the system needs. Each report recommends when the next visit should be.

Does a canopy clean meet TR19?

You can have the canopy cleaned on its own, but it will not cover the ductwork or fan. For TR19, the whole system needs cleaning, at intervals set by BESA guidance.

What kinds of canopies do you clean?

Most commercial kitchen canopies, from one small hood to a long run of canopies. The survey tells us how best to clean yours, from pictures or a visit.

How long will it take to clean the canopy?

A single canopy with a light build-up is fairly quick, but large or heavily soiled canopies take longer. We will tell you what to expect.

What is TR19?

It’s BESA’s specification and the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to. It sets out inspection, cleaning and record keeping and expects a risk-based approach.
