Canopy cleaning in Belbins, done properly
Duct Doctor has cleaned canopies and hoods since 2009. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers grease gutters, island canopies and plenum chambers, and the jobs we see most are filters that clog soon after cleaning and canopy gutters full of old fat.
Work in a small place like Belbins starts with a call to agree access and timings, and the clean itself is the same full TR19® job as in any town: canopy to discharge, then a TR19® certificate and a photo report.
Each visit ends with a written report and pictures, so you have a record of what was done and when. Kitchen extract cleaning to TR19® Grease is certificated through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.
If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We can diagnose it and quote.
Part by part
Plenums and filter housings
A plenum that hasn’t been cleaned for a long time can hold a thick layer of grease. Heavy deposits are scraped out by hand before degreasing.
Wall canopies
Long wall canopies often have several filter banks. We work along the canopy section by section, with pictures for each.
When it’s something else
To be straight with you, some problems need a different fix:
- A canopy undersized for the equipment
- Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor
- Bent or broken filters
If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will say what we think.
Parts of the system we cover
- Plenum chambers
- Island canopies
- Baffle filters
- Grease gutters
- Canopy light fittings
- Wall canopies

Belbins kitchens: local notes
Food Standards Agency data counts about 9 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 5 takeaways within about 1.5 miles of central Belbins. Every kitchen among them that cooks under a canopy has a hood, plenum and filters collecting grease. The fire and rescue service for Belbins is Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract. Kitchens in Belbins get their food hygiene inspections from Test Valley council. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector.
A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near Church of St Andrew or elsewhere in Belbins, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often. If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Romsey Community Hospital about 1.5 miles south, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.
Belbins is about 1 mile north of Romsey, in Hampshire. We provide canopy cleaning for businesses, landlords and public buildings in Belbins and the rest of Hampshire. We cover 683 places across Hampshire, large and small. For sites nearby, see our Southampton page (8 miles or so).

Your questions about canopy cleaning in Belbins
Do you work at weekends in Belbins?
Yes. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends. It means the site in Belbins keeps running as normal. Let us know the hours you are closed and we’ll book within them.
Who is the fire and rescue service for Belbins?
That’s Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Records of extract cleaning are a sensible thing to have ready if a fire safety officer carries out an audit.
What’s TR19?
TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.
What paperwork do I get after a canopy clean?
Before and after photos go into a report, listing what was cleaned. Where the whole system is cleaned, you also get a TR19 certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.
Is there a survey before the work?
Yes, every time. We diagnose before we treat: the survey shows what needs doing and what access we need, and the quote is based on that.
Do you have insurance?
Yes. Duct Doctor is fully insured, and we can share the details when you need them.
Does the law say we must follow TR19?
No. The law sets the duty, and TR19® is the recognised benchmark for meeting it. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person has to manage fire risk, and without records, many insurers may refuse or reduce a claim.
What happens if you can’t reach some of it?
They’re listed in the report, never skipped quietly. You will know exactly which parts weren’t reached and why, along with a quote to put access in.
Why it’s worth doing now in Belbins
Baked-on grease gets harder to shift the longer it stays. Over months, the heat hardens it into a stubborn coating, so the longer it’s left, the longer the clean takes. It’s worth booking a check, because nobody sees inside a duct day to day.
Several systems or sites on one quote often makes better use of the time. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at, and you will get one fixed quote.

Between visits
Good habits slow the build-up between visits. A few tips:
- Report new drips or smells from the canopy
- Wipe the canopy down at close every day
- Check and empty canopy gutters regularly
- Leave the extract running until cooking stops
We recommend when the canopy, or the whole system, should next be cleaned. That date is based on your cooking hours and what we found, in line with BESA guidance.
Run the extract for as long as anything is cooking. Air that keeps moving carries less grease onto the canopy.
Signs you need canopy cleaning in Belbins
Any canopy in Belbins that’s used for cooking will gather grease in the end. That grease is fuel sitting right above the heat, so a flare-up near a greasy hood can quickly become a fire.
It’s time to book a visit if you see:
- An EHO comment about the canopy
- A canopy that no longer draws the smoke away
- Overflowing grease troughs and gutters
- Fat running down the front of the hood
Older buildings often hide long, awkward duct runs, and if you run a kitchen at a historic venue in the area (Mottisfont Abbey is about 2.7 miles north-west), access may need planning.
What to look for in a quote

The process
There are three stages on the day: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, while signing off means the written report and photos. The middle part takes longest, which takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. Seeing the system in photos first means the trip to Belbins can be planned properly.
- Diagnosis first: we look behind the filters as well as at the hood.
- We protect everything below once it has cooled.
- Heavy deposits come off by hand, then the surfaces are degreased.
- We finish the plenum, troughs and canopy and check them over.
- You get pictures of the result and a recommended date for the next clean.
Getting ready for the visit
- Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
- Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
- Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
