How we handle canopy cleaning in Beech

Duct Doctor has cleaned canopies and hoods since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers grease gutters, island canopies and baffle filters, and the jobs we see most are a sticky, discoloured canopy and condensation running down the canopy.

In a village or hamlet like Beech, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are usually a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease, whatever the size of the place.

Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.

FAQs for Beech

Who carries out food hygiene inspections in Beech?

In Beech, it’s East Hampshire council that carries out food hygiene inspections. An officer may look up into the canopy, so clean filters on the day and a recent certificate on file both help.

Do you work in villages like Beech?

Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Beech included. The journey is planned ahead, so a few details about the route help.

Do we need to close the kitchen for a canopy clean?

The clean is done out of hours: after service, overnight or before opening. Equipment under the canopy needs to be off and cool.

Are you fully insured?

Yes. We are fully insured, and we can share the details when you need them.

What happens to the waste?

We contain it and take it with us. Grease, debris and waste water are collected as the work goes on rather than letting it spread.

Can we book visits on a schedule?

Yes, of course. Send details of the systems and how they’re used, and we’ll suggest a schedule and quote for it.

Which sectors do you work in?

All kinds of commercial and public premises: from restaurants, pubs and hotels to schools, hospitals, care homes, offices, shops and food production sites. Work is timed around how each site runs.

What does TR19 mean?

A BESA specification, with two parts that matter most here: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It is not law, but it’s the benchmark.

What affects the quote in Beech

The survey tells us what the work involves. We look at:

  • Where the site is and how we reach it
  • The times the site is available
  • One-off work versus a regular cycle
  • What state the system is in

You will not find a price list here, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. Call for a fixed quote, and we’ll explain what it covers.

What we need to know

Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Send what you can of the following:

  • The site address and the type of premises
  • Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
  • A few general shots of the system
  • Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles

Grease, kitchens and Beech

The FSA’s food hygiene register includes about 3 bars, pubs and nightclubs in and around Beech, up to about a mile and a half out. Wherever they cook, the canopy, duct and fan collect grease just as a restaurant’s do. It’s East Hampshire council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Beech. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service covers Beech. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel.

Term dates shape school work: for a school like Amery Hill School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break. Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Alton Community Hospital is the nearest hospital to Beech, about 1.2 miles east.

Beech is about 2 miles west of Alton, in Hampshire. From the centre of Beech to the outskirts, we cover canopy cleaning for every kind of premises, from a single unit to a large public building. 683 places in Hampshire are on our list, large and small. There’s also a page for Guildford, roughly 20 miles from Beech.

If your site is just outside Beech, we cover Thedden (1 mile north-west), Wivelrod (1 mile west), Bentworth (2 miles north-west), Holt End (2 miles west) and New Copse (2 miles west). Within a short drive, we also cover Basingstoke (9 miles north-west), Winchester (14 miles south-west), Farnborough (15 miles north-east), Fleet (12 miles north-east), Aldershot (13 miles north-east) and Petersfield (10 miles south).

Managing agents and facilities teams in Beech

Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We work across London and the South East, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept to a regular schedule.

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.

The process

Everything the job needs comes with us, including protection sheets, the right tools and access kit. You only need to give us clear access and switch off what needs to be off. The visit takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. Rural roads and tight entrances are worth telling us about before a visit to Beech.

  1. The canopy is checked from photos or on a visit.
  2. Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
  3. We lift out the filters and scrape the plenum and housing.
  4. The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
  5. Filters are refitted, the area cleaned down and the photo report put together.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
  • Clear the space around the work
  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms

How the job changes from site to site

Grease troughs and gutters

Where a trough drains into a grease cup, we empty and clean that as well, and we’ll show staff where it is.

Island canopies

Island canopies often have filters on two sides. Both sides are taken apart and cleaned.

What your team can do, and what needs us

When your team notices a problem between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We will take a look and send you a fixed quote.

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they cannot safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that is where we come in.

What a clean won’t put right

In fairness, there are a few things this work will not fix:

  • Faulty canopy lights or wiring (a job for an electrician)
  • Bent or broken filters
  • A dirty extract fan further along the system

If in doubt, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll say what we think before you book.

Where we work

Common problems we fix in Beech

Any canopy in Beech that is used for cooking will gather grease in the end. That grease is fuel sitting right above the heat, so a flare-up near a greasy hood can quickly become a fire.

The symptoms we’re asked about most include:

  • A sticky, discoloured canopy
  • A canopy flagged at an environmental health inspection
  • A plenum thick with grease behind the filters
  • Poor capture at the hood

If you run catering at a historic house or estate in the area (Bentworth Hall is about 1.5 miles west), event kitchens in older buildings often have awkward duct runs that need planning.

What your quote should include

  • Whether the price is fixed
  • How they set the interval to the next visit
  • Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
  • Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
