Bartley kitchens: local notes

The FSA’s food hygiene register includes about 9 pubs and bars and about 3 hotels and B&Bs in Bartley and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. A pub or hotel kitchen that cooks every day builds up grease in its extract like any other. In Bartley, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from New Forest council. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after. Bartley is covered by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises.

Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Tatchbury Mount Hospital (about 1.8 miles north-east), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands. Term dates shape school work: for a school like Bartley Church of England Junior School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break.

About our canopy cleaning in Bartley

Duct Doctor has cleaned canopies and hoods since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. We are often asked to deal with grease filters blocking between washes and a filter housing caked in grease, across grease gutters, baffle filters and wall canopies.

For a kitchen in or near Bartley, the visit is planned around opening hours and the journey, and the clean covers the whole system, as it would anywhere: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.

Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a dated report with pictures of the work, plus a certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal when the work is a TR19® Grease clean. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

What affects the quote in Bartley

The diagnosis comes before the price. We look at:

  • Where the site is and how we reach it
  • What state the system is in
  • A single visit or a regular plan
  • The scale of the work

What you pay reflects the actual work. That is why we survey first, from photos or on site, and why the quote is fixed before we start.

Helping us quote

Photos let us diagnose from a distance. Try to include:

  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
  • Your last certificate, test record or report
  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is

Bartley questions

Who is the fire and rescue service for Bartley?

That is Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Records of extract cleaning are a sensible thing to have ready if a fire safety officer carries out an audit.

Can school kitchens in Bartley be cleaned in the holidays?

Yes, out-of-term visits are normal for schools. With about 3 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of Bartley, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. Booking early in the term gives the best choice of holiday dates.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes. Photos often do the job, and larger or hidden systems get a visit.

Do we need to close while you work?

Not typically. We work when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends, so you keep your normal hours.

Are you accredited?

We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.

What happens to the waste?

Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, including grease, debris and dirty water. None of it is left on site.

Is TR19 cleaning required by law?

No, not in itself. TR19® is the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs check against, and many insurers ask for proof of cleaning to it. The law behind it is the Fire Safety Order 2005 in England and Wales.

Can one contract cover all our sites?

Yes. Send the list of sites and the work at each and we will quote them together.

How the job changes from site to site

Island canopies

The underside of an island canopy is in full view, so the finish matters. We degrease it thoroughly and photograph the result.

Grease troughs and gutters

Many canopies have troughs or gutters around the edge to catch running grease. They’re emptied and cleaned during the job, so they can do their job again.

Why it’s worth doing now in Bartley

A canopy clean in Bartley now stops the grease spreading further. The work takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up, done while the kitchen is closed. Put off, the grease simply moves further into the system. If the system at a site near Bartley fails, there may be nowhere nearby to move to.

Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Ask for a fixed quote and we’ll explain each part.

The process

Before we leave, we walk the area with whoever is on site. Anything we couldn’t reach or that needs attention is pointed out there and then, and it goes on the report too. All told, the work takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. Somewhere as small as Bartley, the date and timings are agreed with you well before the day.

  1. Diagnosis first: we look behind the filters as well as at the hood.
  2. We protect everything below once it has cooled.
  3. Heavy deposits come off by hand, then the surfaces are degreased.
  4. We finish the plenum, troughs and canopy and check them over.
  5. You get photos of the result and a recommended date for the next clean.

How to prepare

  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
  • Arrange a key holder or contact on site

Looking after it afterwards

A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. Our advice:

  • Wash or exchange the filters on a regular cycle
  • Keep the fan on through service
  • Check all filters are fitted before service
  • Check filters aren’t leaving gaps

Where the canopy is cleaned as part of a full TR19® Grease clean, a TR19 certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. Where only the canopy is done, the report says so clearly.

A daily wipe of the hood keeps fresh grease from baking on. It does not reach the plenum, but it stops the outside building up.

When it’s something else

Before you book, it helps to know what’s not included:

  • Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor
  • A light fitting that doesn’t work
  • Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)

If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll say what we think before booking.

Where we work

  • Canopy light fittings
  • Wall canopies
  • Plenum chambers
  • Island canopies
  • Baffle filters
  • Grease gutters

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but they don’t reach the grease that builds up further in. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
