AHU cleaning in Stroud

How we handle AHU cleaning in Stroud

A cooling coil drips condensate into a tray that should drain away. If the outlet blocks, standing water and slime build up, in the airstream that feeds the building. Cleaning and clearing it is a key part of the job. The work covers supply and extract fans, drain trays and heating and cooling coils, and the jobs we see most are stale or musty smells from the ventilation and air handling units never cleaned inside.

In a village or hamlet like Stroud, few buildings have mechanical ventilation, but where it’s fitted, it needs the same inspection and cleaning as anywhere.

Good records are part of the job. Each visit is written up with pictures, covering the work done, any areas we couldn’t access and a recommended next date. File it in your maintenance log so it’s ready for an insurer, fire officer or EHO.

FAQs for Stroud

Do you work in villages like Stroud?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.

Do you work overnight in Stroud?

Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. The site is handed back ready to open. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote.

How much notice should we give?

That depends on the slot you want and the size of the job. Mention your preferred dates with your enquiry, and for anything urgent, ring our 24/7 emergency line.

Can you set up regular visits?

Yes. We run scheduled maintenance contracts, set at the interval the system needs. The report from each visit recommends the next date.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes. For many sites, photos and a few details are enough, while bigger or harder-to-see systems are surveyed on site.

What do you do with what you remove?

Anything we remove is contained as we work and taken away with us, from grease and debris to used cleaning water. None of it is left on site.

What does TR19 mean?

TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.

How often do AHUs need cleaning?

That is set by inspection, in line with TR19® Air. Units in heavy use or in sensitive buildings may need attention more often.

Part by part

Rooftop and plant room units

Ceiling-mounted and compact units are cleaned too. The space underneath is protected with sheeting first.

Filters

Every AHU relies on its filters to catch dust before it reaches the coils. As part of the clean, filters are checked and cleaned or replaced as agreed, and clean the filter housing.

When to call us in Stroud

Wherever there’s a cooling coil, there’s condensate. If the drain tray outlet blocks or the tray does not fall properly, water stands in it, and slime and smells soon follow.

Common reasons sites call us include:

  • Intake sections clogged with outdoor debris
  • Plant that has been serviced but not cleaned
  • Dust built up on fan impellers
  • Units needing a clean before a new tenant or handover

Classrooms and halls at schools such as Langrish Primary School are easiest to work in when pupils are away.

What to look for in a quote

  • Whether the quote shows VAT
  • Whether they recommend a next date
  • What’s included in the scope, part by part
  • Their accreditations, such as BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite, CHAS or SafeContractor

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

If you look after several sites, we can schedule visits across all of them on one quote. Every building has its own written report, so each one has its own record.

When the building owner and the occupier are different, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We are happy to deal with either side, and the report can go to both.

Stroud buildings and their air

There are about 3 schools, colleges and universities and about 4 care, childcare and hospital premises on the FSA’s food hygiene register within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Stroud. Classrooms, bedrooms and care spaces are often served by ducted air, and that ductwork collects dust over time. The nearest hospital to Stroud is Petersfield Community Hospital, about 1.3 miles east. If you run a surgery, clinic or care home, your ventilation deserves the same care as a hospital’s, on a smaller scale. Stroud is about 51 miles from central London, well within the area we cover across London and the South East. The visit is fixed around your opening hours, not ours.

Healthcare ventilation, from large hospitals like Petersfield Community Hospital (about 1.3 miles east) to small clinics, depends on clean filters, coils and ducts.

Stroud is about 2 miles west of Petersfield, in Hampshire. We carry out AHU cleaning for commercial premises of every kind in Stroud and the rest of Hampshire. Across Hampshire, we cover 683 places, Stroud among them. Our Portsmouth page covers sites nearby (15 miles or so).

Honest limits

To be straight with you, there are a few things this work will not fix:

  • Ductwork downstream of the unit, which is a separate clean
  • Problems with the unit’s controls or sensors
  • A system that’s undersized for the building

If you’re not sure, just call 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer.

What affects the quote in Stroud

We quote each job individually. These are the things that affect it:

  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • A single visit or a regular plan
  • The condition we find in the survey
  • Whether several sites go on one quote

One small site or a whole estate, the quote is built the same way: the work involved, the access and the timing. The price is fixed before we start.

Asking for a quote

Many jobs can be priced from pictures and some basics. Useful things to send:

  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
  • The site address and the type of premises
  • Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet

Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before work begins.

What we do, step by step

There’s very little for your team to do on the day. A contact on site lets us in at the agreed time and points us to the system, and the rest is down to us. Before we leave, the area is tidied and the paperwork follows. A few pictures of the system help us make the most of a visit to a place like Stroud.

  1. We survey the unit from pictures or on site and agree what’s included.
  2. We arrange the shutdown with your staff and sheet the area.
  3. Filters, coils, fan section and casing are cleaned in turn.
  4. Standing water and slime come out of the tray and the drain is checked.
  5. You get a TR19® certificate and a photo report.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Agree a time when the area can be out of use
  • Clear the space around the work
  • Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards

To get a fixed quote, call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with the site type, your trading hours and a short description of the system. A few pictures and your last certificate or report help a lot. You’ll typically have a quote within one working day.

Advice

What happens if it’s left?

Leave an AHU uncleaned and the dirt does not stay put. It’s carried through the ductwork and out of the grilles, which is why the unit and the ducts are best cleaned together. It’s worth booking a check, because nobody sees inside a duct day to day.

Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, which can make the next visit longer. If you’re not sure what’s needed, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email for straight advice and a fixed quote.
