TR19 inspection in Wash Water
A pre-clean survey looks at the whole system, from canopy to discharge. Access is checked along the full length, and record grease readings at set points. If you’re dealing with extracts that may be over the 200 micron mean and extracts that have never been grease tested, we can help.
Work in a small place like Wash Water starts with a call to agree access and timings, and the clean covers the whole system, as it would anywhere: canopy to discharge, then a TR19® certificate and a photo report.
Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a dated report with photos of the work, plus a certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal when the work is a TR19® Grease clean. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

When something else is needed
TR19 inspection cannot fix everything, and we’ll tell you before any work starts. It does not solve:
- The responsible person’s own fire risk assessment
- Removing the grease, which is a separate clean
- Ductwork that was designed or installed badly
If in doubt, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we’ll say what we think before booking.

Wash Water: your questions answered
Do you work in villages like Wash Water?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.
Who is the fire and rescue service for Wash Water?
It’s Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service, which covers Wash Water. If a fire safety officer visits a commercial kitchen, they may ask about the fire risk assessment and how the extract is kept clean.
What is grease thickness testing?
The Wet Film Thickness Test (WFTT) and Deposit Thickness Test (DTT) measure how thick the grease is at a given point. Readings are taken at set points through the system.
What do you need from me for a quote?
Where the site is, what it is and when it’s open, along with a few photos and any previous report.
Do you offer emergency callouts?
Yes, any time. If something urgent happens, like a fan failing or damage after a fire, call our 24/7 line, and we will advise on what to do next.
How long does grease testing take?
It takes a couple of hours for a typical kitchen extract system. The visit is timed so cooking isn’t disrupted.
How much notice should we give?
That depends on the slot you want and the size of the job. Mention your preferred dates with your enquiry, and if it’s an emergency, call us any time.
What happens to the waste?
It leaves the site with us when we go. While we work, it’s kept contained to keep the area clean.
How the visit works
On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, which is often after service, overnight or at a weekend. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool first, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. On site, it takes a morning or less for one kitchen, more where there are several systems. If you can send pictures, we can arrive in Wash Water knowing what to expect.
- Post-clean verification is booked once the clean is done.
- We open the access points used on the clean.
- Grease readings are taken again at set points.
- Photos are taken to show the condition after the clean.
- We report the findings and flag any areas that need more work.
Preparing for the visit
- Have your last certificate or report to hand
- Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
- Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool

Grease, kitchens and Wash Water
Look up Wash Water on the FSA’s food hygiene register and you’ll find about 3 restaurants, cafés and works canteens within about 1.5 miles of central Wash Water. Where they cook under a canopy, a grease reading is the way to tell whether the extract is due a clean. Wash Water is covered by Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order. In Wash Water, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from West Berkshire council. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. Before-and-after pictures from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand.
Older buildings often hide long, awkward duct runs, and if you run a kitchen at a historic venue in the area (Highclere Castle is about 2.7 miles south), access may need planning. Volunteers running a hall kitchen near St Luke Church, or anywhere in Wash Water, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it. Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; West Berkshire Community Hospital is the nearest hospital to Wash Water, about 3.8 miles north-east.

What affects the cost of TR19 inspection
We quote each job individually. These are the things that affect it:
- One-off work versus a regular cycle
- Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
- How many systems or sites are involved
- The condition we find in the survey
Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you’re not sure what’s needed, call 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we will give you an honest view and a fixed quote.
Asking for a quote
The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. With your enquiry, please include:
- The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
- A few general shots of the system
- Problems your staff have spotted
- The times we could work without disrupting the site
Quoting starts with a diagnosis, either from photos and details you send or from a site visit. After that, you get a fixed price for the work so you know the cost before we start.
Between visits
A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. We recommend:
- Mention new equipment or longer hours at the next test
- Keep TR19 certificates, readings and reports together
- Clean or swap grease filters as often as the kitchen needs
- Share inspection reports with your insurer or broker when asked
Readings of 500 microns or more are highlighted as needing immediate spot cleaning, and we can arrange it.
When cooking hours or the menu change, check the interval still fits. A quick grease test answers the question.
Why it’s worth doing now in Wash Water
A pre-clean survey avoids surprises on the night. Access problems are spotted in advance rather than on the night, so the clean covers the whole system. Out of sight is the usual reason a rural system goes too long without attention.
No two sites are the same, so each one gets its own fixed quote. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all play a part.

What the work involves, part by part
Extract fan and discharge
The extract fan and its housing collect grease too. We check and test them as part of the inspection.
Canopy and plenum
Filters can look fine while the plenum behind them is heavily coated. That’s why we test behind them.
