About our TR19 inspection in Heronsgate
A pre-clean survey looks at the whole system, from canopy to discharge. Access is checked along the full length, and record grease readings at set points. The work covers pre-clean surveys, post-clean checks and access surveys, and people most often call us about post-clean verification after another contractor’s clean and surveys needed before quoting a full clean.
For a kitchen in or near Heronsgate, the visit is planned around opening hours and the journey, and the clean covers the whole system, as it would anywhere: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.
We’re CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we’re fully insured. On top of that, we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

What we are called out for in Heronsgate
You can’t judge grease thickness by eye. A system can look clean at the filters and be heavily coated further in, which is why readings matter.
The symptoms we are asked about most include:
- Kitchens taken over with no cleaning records
- Ductwork where grease may be over the TR19 limits
- Systems that need surveying before cleaning
- Insurance renewals needing proof of TR19 cleaning
Volunteers running a hall kitchen near St John, or anywhere in Heronsgate, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.
What your quote should include
- Whether the figure could change on the day
- Whether the quote shows VAT
- Proof of accreditation you can verify
- Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach

Breakfasts, bar meals and functions all put grease into the extract wherever they’re cooked. In Heronsgate, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Three Rivers council. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. If you run catering at a historic house or estate in the area (Chenies Manor House is about 2.4 miles north), event kitchens in older buildings often have awkward duct runs that need planning. How the job changes from site to site
Extract fan and discharge
Grease on the fan adds to wear. The inspection shows whether it needs cleaning now.
Vertical risers
Risers in multi-storey buildings can pass through other areas, so we arrange access ahead of time.
Why act early in Heronsgate
Post-clean verification shows whether the system was left the way the certificate says, while there’s still time to put anything right. In a place like Heronsgate, ductwork and fans are easy to forget until something goes wrong.
What you pay reflects the actual work. That’s why we survey first, from photos or on site, and the price is agreed before work begins.

Heronsgate: your questions answered
Do you work at weekends in Heronsgate?
Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. It means the site in Heronsgate keeps running as normal. Your opening times are the first thing we ask for.
Which fire service covers Heronsgate?
That’s Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. TR19® is not law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.
What about areas you can’t get to?
Anything we cannot reach goes on the report, with photos where possible, and we explain what access is needed, for example new access panels.
Are you accredited?
Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we are fully insured.
How far ahead should we book?
It depends on the time you need and how big the job is. Tell us your preferred dates when you ask for a quote, and for anything urgent, ring our 24/7 emergency line.
Can you come out in an emergency?
Yes. If something urgent happens, like a fan failing or damage after a fire, call our 24/7 line and we’ll talk you through the next steps.
What grease levels does TR19 allow?
The TR19® Grease figures are a mean of 200 microns or less between cleans, and immediate spot cleaning wherever a reading hits 500 microns. Our report sets your readings against both.
Which sectors do you work in?
Any site with a kitchen or a ventilation system to look after, from a single café to a large school. Hotels, schools, care homes, offices, shops and leisure sites are all part of our work.
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We can diagnose it and quote.
Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.
Honest limits
A few issues sit outside what this work can do:
- Ductwork that was designed or installed badly
- A faulty or failing extract fan
- Parts of the duct nobody can reach yet
Not sure which it is? You can call 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we’ll tell you honestly.
Parts of the system we cover
- Pre-clean surveys
- Deposit thickness tests
- Access surveys
- Insurer audits
- Wet film thickness tests
- Post-clean checks
How the visit works
The first job on site is protection: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. Then we make the system safe and start. It takes a morning or less for one kitchen, more where there are several systems, and we clear up before we go. If the van will struggle with a lane or gateway near Heronsgate, let us know and we’ll plan around it.
- First we look at the system’s cleaning history, if there is one.
- We follow the extract from canopy to discharge.
- Access panels are located and any missing ones noted.
- We measure the grease and photograph each point.
- You get a report and a fixed quote for the clean.
Getting ready for the visit
- Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
- Clear loose items from the work area
- Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
