Questions from Essendon

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Essendon?

Essendon is in the area of Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. TR19® isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.

Do you work in villages like Essendon?

Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and Essendon is covered. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Can you price the work without visiting?

Typically, yes. Send wide shots, close-ups of any access panels and anything that worries you, and we normally come back within one working day. If pictures are not enough, we will survey first.

Do you work out of hours?

Yes, and that’s how we prefer to work. The visit is timed for when the area isn’t in use, whether that is late evening, overnight or a weekend.

How do you protect the area?

We cover floors and nearby surfaces with sheeting before we start, and waste is contained as we go. Before we leave, we tidy up and clean down.

Can you set up regular visits?

Yes. Scheduled maintenance plans are part of what we do, set at the interval the system needs. The report from each visit recommends the next date.

What does TR19 mean?

A BESA specification, with two parts that matter most here: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It is not legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.

Will you produce a report for our insurer?

Yes. Our TR19 audits cover readings, pictures, access and a recommended cleaning interval. It’s set out for your insurer or broker.

TR19 inspection for kitchens and businesses in Essendon

Taking on a kitchen in Essendon with no cleaning records? Start with an inspection. You get readings, pictures and a clear view of what’s needed, before any cleaning is booked. Common call-outs are for missing TR19 certificates or history and confirming a clean reached the whole system, on access surveys, insurer audits and post-clean checks.

For a kitchen in or near Essendon, the visit is planned around opening hours and the journey, and the clean covers the whole system, as it would anywhere: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.

We have been trading since 2009, as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we are fully insured.

Multi-site and managed buildings

Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit ends with a dated report and photos, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.

When the building owner and the occupier are different, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We are happy to deal with either side and send the paperwork to whoever needs it.

Why act early in Essendon

If a kitchen in Essendon has been cleaned on the same calendar for years, there’s no way to know if that interval is right without measuring. Measured readings let a competent person set the interval. Systems in rural buildings are often out of sight and out of mind.

Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Problems in a system tend to grow, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you’re not sure what’s needed, call 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form for straight advice and a fixed quote.

Why book with us

  • Trading since 2009
  • CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001
  • Fixed quotes, normally within one working day
  • Full insurance on every job

Read what affects the cost and how to check a contractor.

Between visits

A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. We recommend:

  • Keep grease filters clean and fitted properly
  • Book the next test on the date in the report
  • Tell us if menus or opening hours change
  • File every inspection report with your certificates

If any reading is 500 microns or more, the report flags it for immediate spot cleaning, and we can arrange it.

Fit access panels where the survey finds sections cannot be reached, so grease is not left building in hidden parts.

What staff can safely do

Logging matters as much as cleaning. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, next to our reports.

When your team notices a problem between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We will take a look and give you a fixed quote.

TR19 inspection in Essendon: the local picture

The FSA’s food hygiene register includes about 4 pubs, bars and clubs within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Essendon. Where they serve hot food, their kitchen extracts need cleaning to TR19® like any restaurant’s. Environmental health officers from Welwyn Hatfield council inspect food businesses in Essendon. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready. Essendon is covered by Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel.

If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near Church of St Mary the Virgin or elsewhere in Essendon, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event. Older buildings often hide long, awkward duct runs, and if you run a kitchen at a historic venue in the area (Hatfield House is about 2.4 miles west), access may need planning. Healthcare kitchens can’t easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Essendon is Queen Elizabeth II Hospital, about 2 miles north-west.

When something else is needed

It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:

  • The legal duty, which stays with the responsible person
  • Ductwork that was designed or installed badly
  • Hidden runs that need access panels first

Not sure which it is? You can give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will tell you honestly.

What the work covers

  • Insurer audits
  • Post-clean checks
  • Deposit thickness tests
  • Wet film thickness tests
  • Access surveys
  • Pre-clean surveys

How it works

Before we leave, we walk the area with whoever is on site. Anything we couldn’t reach or that needs attention is pointed out there and then, and it goes on the report too. All told, the work takes around an hour or two per canopy and duct system. Photos of the system and how to reach it help us plan a visit to Essendon.

  1. First we look at the system’s cleaning history, if there is one.
  2. The layout is traced from the canopy to the discharge.
  3. Access panels are located and any missing ones noted.
  4. Grease readings are taken and photos recorded.
  5. You get a report and a fixed quote for the clean.

Preparing for the visit

  • Let us know about parking and loading
  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet

Advice

Part by part

Restaurants, pubs and hotels

Heavy use under BESA guidance, 12 to 16 hours a day, means a clean at least every 3 months, and readings show whether that’s enough.

Canopy and plenum

The plenum behind the filters can carry a lot of grease. Readings and pictures are taken in the plenum as part of every survey.
