Kitchen extract cleaning in OX18: how it works
We’ve been trading since 2009, cleaning kitchen extracts across the South East and London. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, we clean to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 and are fully insured. We are often asked to deal with heavy grease build-up inside the duct runs and a TR19 certificate needed for the insurer, on plenums and filters, vertical risers and canopies and hoods.
The visit has three parts: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, while signing off means the written report and photos. Most of the time goes on the work itself, and that takes a single shift for most kitchens, with long duct runs and tall risers needing more time.
- We survey the system first, from your photos and details or on a site visit.
- Set points are tested for grease thickness and the quote is fixed before any work starts.
- With the kitchen closed and equipment off and cool, the area is sheeted.
- The whole route is cleaned, from the canopy through the ductwork to the fan and the discharge.
- Finally the system is re-tested and photographed, and the certificate and report follow.
How we quote
Working hours, access and the scale of the site can all change the price. Each of those is built into the quote and give you a fixed price before any work starts.

Getting a quote
Getting a quote does not take long. Call or email with a few details and you’ll normally have a fixed price within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.
Around Carterton
We work in commercial kitchens and buildings around St John the Evangelist, Carterton Primary School and The Golden Eagle pub and the streets around them. Well-known places in the area include Bronze Age Bowl Barrow (2.2 miles south) and Swinford Museum (3.4 miles south-west).
Kitchen extract cleaning around OX18
In OX18, a busy kitchen in a place such as Carterton, Bampton and Burford and a quiet village kitchen need very different cleaning intervals. The right interval comes from hours of use and grease readings.
In England, the Fire Safety Order puts the duty on the responsible person to assess and reduce fire risk, and each certificate and photo report is a record you can keep in your log book.
Carterton: Historic houses near Carterton, such as Minster Lovell Hall about 3.5 miles north-east, are a reminder that older buildings with event kitchens can have long, awkward duct routes. A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near St John the Evangelist or elsewhere in Carterton, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.
What your team can do, and what needs us
Keep a record of what your team does. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, next to our reports.
Staff cleaning does not replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.
What we are called out for in OX18
It’s common for parts of a duct to have been missed for years. Most of the time it’s because there were never enough access panels, so nobody could get to them. That hidden grease keeps building where nobody looks.
Any of these means the system needs a check-up:
- A TR19 certificate needed for the insurer
- An inspection that picked up a dirty extract
- Rancid smells from grease in the duct
- Ductwork thick with old, hardened grease
What affects the quote in OX18
Before we fix a price, we need to know a few things. We look at:
- Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
- The scale of the work
- Site rules, permits and inductions
- The times the site is available
The cost depends on the size of the system, what state it’s in and how easy it is to reach. You get a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises.
Asking for a quote
Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Useful things to send:
- When the site is open and when it’s quiet
- Any access panels or hatches you can see
- A few general shots of the system
- How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in photos, get a survey first. Either way, you get a fixed price before we start.
Between visits
A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. We recommend:
- Do not let the canopy gutters overflow
- Keep the TR19 certificate and photo report in the maintenance log
- Never cook with filters missing or out of place
- Wash or exchange the filters often
The report gives a recommended date for the next clean, based on your cooking hours and the grease we measured. A 3, 6 or 12-monthly maintenance plan keeps it on track, so the date isn’t missed.
Report drips, smells or a noisy fan early. Grease dripping from the canopy, a burning smell or a fan that sounds rough are all signs of build-up, and a grease thickness test can confirm it.
What the work involves, part by part
Canopy and plenum
Grease meets the system first at the canopy and the plenum behind the filters. Both are scraped and degreased inside and out, including the filter housing.
Restaurant and pub kitchens
Busy restaurant and pub kitchens often cook for long hours, frying and grilling, which can put them in BESA’s 3 or 6-monthly bands. We clean after close or before opening.
OX18 questions
What’s TR19?
TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.
How much notice should we give?
It depends on the time you need and how big the job is. Tell us your preferred dates when you ask for a quote, and for anything urgent, ring our 24/7 emergency line.
Do you have a 24/7 line?
Yes, 24/7. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, with the emergency line covering every other hour.
What do you do to protect the area?
Protection goes down first: sheeting over floors, worktops and anything close to the work. We tidy up and take our waste away before we leave.
When do you clean the extract?
When the kitchen is closed, at whatever time suits you. The equipment is switched off and left to cool, and we hand the kitchen back ready for the next service.
Are you a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member?
We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 sit alongside that, and we are fully insured.
What if parts of the system cannot be reached?
They’re listed in the report, never skipped quietly. You’ll know exactly which parts weren’t reached and why, and we can quote to improve the access.
