Kitchen extract cleaning in Titmore Green, done properly

Think of it as a health check for the kitchen’s airways: diagnose with a survey, treat with a thorough clean, then sign it off. That clean bill of health comes as a TR19 certificate and a photo report, issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. If you’re dealing with poor airflow at the canopy and an extract that has never been cleaned to TR19, we can help, from vertical risers, plenums and filters and canopies and hoods onwards. Need a TR19 duct cleaning contractor for Titmore Green? Duct Doctor has covered London and the South East since 2009, with a certificate and photo report after every clean.

A kitchen running fryers and chargrills all day builds up grease much faster than one that mostly steams and boils, so the interval is set by what you cook as well as how long.

Somewhere as small as Titmore Green, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease.

The sign-off is always in writing: a dated report with pictures of the work, plus a certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal when the work is a TR19® Grease clean. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

The process

Our technicians bring everything the work needs, including protection sheets, the right tools and access kit. All we need from you is clear access and the right equipment switched off. On site, the work takes a single shift for most kitchens, with long duct runs and tall risers needing more time. If you can send photos, we can arrive in Titmore Green knowing what to expect.

  1. First comes a survey of the whole system, by photos or a visit.
  2. Set points are tested for grease thickness and the quote is fixed before any work starts.
  3. With the kitchen closed and equipment off and cool, the area is sheeted.
  4. The whole route is cleaned, from the canopy through the ductwork to the fan and the discharge.
  5. We test again, photograph the result and issue your TR19 certificate and photo report.

Preparing for the visit

  • Tell us where we can park and unload
  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
  • Clear the space around the work

Advice

Common problems we fix in Titmore Green

The type of cooking changes the amount of grease. Frying, grilling and roasting send far more fat into the canopy than steaming or boiling, which is why grease readings matter more than the calendar.

If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:

  • A kitchen taken over without any extract records
  • Fat running down the canopy edge
  • Years of baked-on grease in the ducts
  • An extract that no longer clears the smoke

If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Lister Hospital about 1.1 miles east, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.

Before booking anyone

  • What insurance they carry
  • Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach
  • What records you’ll receive afterwards
  • How areas they cannot reach will be recorded

How to choose an extract cleaning contractor

Leave it or put it right?

TR19® is not law, but the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 is. It puts a duty on the responsible person to assess and reduce fire risk, which in a kitchen includes the grease in the extract. TR19 is the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to. With notice, the visit to Titmore Green can be fitted around your bookings and events.

Every site is different, so each one gets its own fixed quote. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all make a difference.

Honest limits

Kitchen extract cleaning can’t fix everything, and we’ll tell you before any work starts. It does not solve:

  • A fan motor or bearings that have failed (that needs a fan repair or replacement)
  • A duct that’s holed or coming apart
  • Extraction that can’t cope with the cooking because of its design

If in doubt, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll say what we think.

Where we work

  • Extract fans
  • Horizontal duct runs
  • Canopies and hoods
  • Plenums and filters
  • Discharge points
  • Vertical risers

What staff can safely do

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they cannot safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, which is where we come in.

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

Multi-site and managed buildings

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We cover South East England and London, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept on a regular cycle.

Common questions in Titmore Green

Who would carry out a food hygiene inspection at a kitchen in Titmore Green?

Kitchens in Titmore Green are inspected by North Hertfordshire council’s environmental health officers. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.

Do you do school kitchen extract cleaning in Titmore Green in the summer holidays?

Yes. Half-terms and the summer break are the natural time for school work. Around Titmore Green, the Food Standards Agency lists about 5 schools and colleges with registered kitchens within a mile and a half or so. You can give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email with the dates the site is empty.

Can one contract cover all our sites?

Yes. Send the list of sites and the work at each and you will get one fixed quote.

How do you keep the site clean during the work?

We cover floors and nearby surfaces with sheeting before work begins, and waste is contained as we go. At the end, the area is cleaned down.

When do you clean the extract?

Cleans are timed to avoid service. Overnight, weekend and between-service cleans are all possible and the kitchen is ready to cook when we leave.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Tell us what you have and how it’s used and we’ll propose a schedule with a fixed quote.

How often should a kitchen extract be cleaned?

The minimum is set by BESA guidance on daily use, from 3-monthly to 12-monthly. Heavy frying and grilling can mean shorter intervals, and readings will tell you.

Do you clean the whole extract system or just the canopy?

A TR19 Grease clean covers the full extract route, not just the canopy. Canopy, plenum, filters, ductwork, risers, fan and discharge are all included, reached through access panels where needed.

Aftercare tips

After the visit, a few habits help the work last:

  • Make sure every filter is fitted before cooking
  • Keep the baffle filters clean
  • Keep the TR19 certificate and photo report in the maintenance log
  • Keep grease collection points emptied

Any section without access is marked on the report. That’s part of an honest TR19 clean, not a failing, and new access panels can be fitted so the next clean covers it.

Report drips, smells or a noisy fan early. Grease dripping from the canopy, a burning smell or a fan that sounds rough are all signs of build-up, and a grease thickness test can confirm it.
