Kitchen extract cleaning in Ramsden, done properly

Duct Doctor has been cleaning kitchen extract systems since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, we clean to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’re fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. Typical jobs include grease drips onto cooking equipment and missing paperwork after a change of operator, on plenums and filters, horizontal duct runs and extract fans. Kitchen extract cleaning, TR19 cleaning, extraction cleaning: whatever you call it, in Ramsden it means the same thing to us: the whole system, cleaned and certificated.

Before we clean, we look at where the grease is: grease readings at set points tell us where the heaviest deposits are, and readings afterwards go into your report.

In a small place like Ramsden, kitchens are often in older or extended buildings, with long single-storey duct runs, and those horizontal sections are where grease settles. We agree access and timings in advance.

The sign-off is always in writing: a written report, dated and illustrated with pictures, plus a certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal when the work is a TR19® Grease clean. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

What your team can do, and what needs us

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that is where we come in.

Looking after it afterwards

A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. We recommend:

  • Clean the grease filters regularly between TR19 cleans
  • Give the canopy a daily wipe
  • Don’t let the canopy gutters overflow
  • Keep the extract on whenever the range is lit

The certificate records when the clean was done, where and by whom. File it with the fire risk assessment and the maintenance log so it’s ready when anyone asks to see it.

Stick to the cleaning interval on the certificate. BESA guidance links the minimum interval to daily cooking hours, so a change in hours may mean a change in interval, and grease readings will show it.

When something else is needed

Some problems need a different service or another trade:

  • An undersized canopy or fan
  • A grease trap that needs emptying
  • Ductwork that is corroded, split or leaking (that is for a ductwork contractor)

Not sure which it is? You can phone us on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Plenums and filters
  • Extract fans
  • Horizontal duct runs
  • Canopies and hoods
  • Discharge points
  • Vertical risers

Why deal with it now?

Grease that’s left only gets thicker. BESA guidance says the mean should not go above 200 microns between cleans, and 500 microns or more at any point needs immediate spot cleaning. The longer it’s left, the bigger the job becomes. It’s worth booking a check, because nobody sees inside a duct day to day.

What you pay reflects the actual work. That is why every job is surveyed first, and the price is agreed before any work starts.

What you get with us

  • Fixed quotes, usually within one working day
  • In business since 2009
  • Every job surveyed first
  • A written report with pictures after every visit

What the work involves, part by part

Canopy and plenum

Canopies vary from a single hood to long runs over several appliances, every section is cleaned and recorded in the photo report before and after.

Restaurant and pub kitchens

Restaurants and pubs tend to cook long hours with plenty of frying and grilling, so their cleaning interval is often 3 or 6 months under BESA guidance. We clean after close or before opening.

Ramsden: your questions answered

Who is the fire and rescue service for Ramsden?

It’s Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, which covers Ramsden. If a fire safety officer visits a commercial kitchen, they may ask about the fire risk assessment and how the extract is kept clean.

Can the work in Ramsden be done at night or at weekends?

Yes. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends. The work in Ramsden can fit around your hours. Let us know the hours you are closed and we’ll book within them.

What does TR19 mean?

It’s the industry benchmark for cleaning ventilation and kitchen extract systems, written by BESA. It sets out inspection, cleaning and record keeping and expects a risk-based approach.

Why do insurers care about extract cleaning?

Because a dirty extract can spread a fire through a building. Many insurers require TR19 cleaning, and may refuse or reduce a claim without proof, so keep every certificate.

What do you do to protect the area?

We start with protection: sheeting over floors, worktops and anything close to the work. The area is left tidy, with our waste taken away.

Which parts of the extract do you clean?

Every part the air passes through, as far as access allows. Sections with no access are listed on the report, and extra panels can be fitted.

Which kinds of sites do you work on?

Restaurants and pubs, hotels, schools and colleges, hospitals and care homes, offices and retail, as well as food production and leisure sites.

How often should a kitchen extract be cleaned?

It depends on how many hours a day the kitchen cooks. Heavy use of 12 to 16 hours a day calls for a clean at least every 3 months under BESA guidance, and lighter use less often. We’ll recommend a date after measuring the grease.

Fixed quotes for kitchen extract cleaning in Ramsden

Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. What affects the quote:

  • Any permits to work or inductions
  • One-off work versus a regular cycle
  • The condition of the system
  • When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends

You will not find a price list here, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. For a fixed quote, call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email, and we’ll talk you through it.

What to send for a quote

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
  • Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks

Want a quote for kitchen extract cleaning? Please give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form with a few details about the site. We’ll explain what we’d do and send a fixed quote before anything is booked.

How the visit works

Night work is normal for us. Evenings, nights and weekends are when much of our work happens, so a kitchen or building can carry on as usual the next day. The visit itself takes a single shift for most kitchens, with long duct runs and tall risers needing more time. Pictures of the system and its access let us plan the work in Ramsden before we set off.

  1. We survey the system first, from your photos and details or on a site visit.
  2. Set points are tested for grease thickness and the quote is fixed before any work starts.
  3. Once the kitchen has closed and the equipment has cooled, we sheet and protect the area.
  4. We clean the canopy, plenum, filters, ducts, risers, fan and discharge.
  5. Readings and pictures are taken again, and you receive a TR19 certificate and photo report.

Preparing for the visit

  • Find the previous report, if there is one
  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
  • Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down

Ask for a quote

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and we can price many jobs without a visit.
