Kitchen extract cleaning in Hampton: the local picture

The coast is only about 1 mile from Hampton. Salt air speeds up corrosion of roof-level fans, discharge cowls and their fixings. Food Standards Agency records include about 23 pubs, bars and clubs within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Hampton. A pub or hotel kitchen that cooks every day builds up grease in its extract like any other. In Hampton, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Canterbury City council. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked.

Bursars and site managers at schools such as Hampton Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty. Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Whitstable and Tankerton Hospital (about 2.2 miles west), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands.

What happens on the day

There are three stages on the day: getting the area ready, doing the work and signing it off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, while signing off means the written report and pictures. The middle part takes longest, which takes anything from a few hours to a full night, depending on the size of the system. Because the survey comes first, a visit to Hampton can typically be finished without a second trip.

  1. You send pictures or we visit, and the system is surveyed from canopy to discharge.
  2. We take grease readings at set points and give you a fixed quote.
  3. On the night, the equipment is off and cool and the kitchen is sheeted.
  4. We work through the system from the canopy to the fan and discharge.
  5. We re-test, photograph and send your certificate and photo report.

How to prepare

  • Mention any parking or loading restrictions
  • Clear the space around the work
  • Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend

How to get a quote

There’s no standard price list, because every site is different. We look at your system first, from photos or on a visit, and then give you a fixed quote. To start, call 0345 646 2711, or send details by email.

Multi-site and managed buildings

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We cover South East England and London, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept to a regular schedule.

Part by part

Canopy and plenum

Grease meets the system first at the canopy and the plenum behind the filters. Both are scraped and degreased inside and out, including the filter housing.

Schools, hospitals and care homes

School kitchens can look lightly used but still need a TR19 clean at least every 12 months under BESA guidance. Holidays make it simple to schedule.

What staff can safely do

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

Keep a record of what your team does. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, next to our reports.

Aftercare tips

Think of this as the after-treatment advice, in brief:

  • Never cook with filters missing or out of place
  • Flag any change in how the extract sounds or works
  • Wash or exchange the filters often
  • Switch the fan on before cooking starts

The kitchen is left clean and ready for the next service. Waste grease and water are contained and removed, so you can start cooking as normal.

Keep the fan on throughout service. Cooking with the extract off lets grease and heat settle in the canopy, and the next clean has more to do.

Your questions about kitchen extract cleaning in Hampton

Can a school canteen extract in Hampton be done out of term time?

Yes. The holidays are the usual time for school work. Around Hampton, the Food Standards Agency lists about 10 schools and colleges with registered kitchens within a mile and a half or so. Booking early in the term gives the best choice of holiday dates.

Does coastal air change anything about kitchen extract cleaning in Hampton?

It can. Being within about 1 mile of the sea means more corrosion on metalwork in Hampton than inland. A fan housing that is rusting near the coast can fail sooner, so it’s worth catching early.

Which parts of the extract do you clean?

Every part the air passes through, as far as access allows. Where there aren’t enough access panels to reach a section, it’s recorded, and we can fit new ones.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes. Photos often do the job, while bigger or harder-to-see systems are surveyed on site.

Do you work with multi-site operators?

Yes. Send the list of sites and the work at each and you will get one fixed quote.

Will my insurer ask for a TR19 certificate?

Grease-filled ducts can carry fire well beyond the kitchen. Many insurers require TR19 cleaning, and may refuse or reduce a claim without proof, so keep every certificate.

What is TR19?

A BESA specification, with two parts that matter most here: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It isn’t legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.

Does the law say I must clean to TR19?

TR19® itself isn’t law. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and cleaning to TR19 is the recognised way to show you’ve dealt with extract grease.

Do you need kitchen extract cleaning in Hampton?

It’s common for parts of a duct to have been missed for years. The usual reason is a lack of access panels, so nobody could get to them. That hidden grease keeps building where nobody looks.

What we’re most often called out for:

  • An inspection that picked up a dirty extract
  • Grease smells coming from the extract
  • An extract that no longer clears the smoke
  • A kitchen taken over without any extract records

Where a hall near St Andrew's Church, or anywhere in Hampton, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does.

Before booking anyone

  • Whether a written report and photos are included
  • Whether the quote is based on a survey or pictures
  • How they set the interval to the next visit

How to choose an extract cleaning contractor

When it’s something else

We’d rather tell you now than book work that won’t help, so here are the limits:

  • A broken extract fan that will not run
  • An undersized canopy or fan
  • A duct that’s holed or coming apart

If you are not sure, just call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking.
