Kitchen extract cleaning in Curteis' Corner

Kitchen extract cleaning in Curteis' Corner, done properly

The part of the system nobody sees is often the dirtiest. Access panels let us into the duct runs and risers, scraping heavy deposits by hand before degreasing. Anything out of reach is noted in the report, and new panels can be fitted. The work covers vertical risers, horizontal duct runs and canopies and hoods, and common reasons people get in touch are a system with no record of a TR19 clean and a smoky, hot kitchen with weak extraction. Kitchen extract cleaning, TR19 cleaning, extraction cleaning: whatever you call it, in Curteis' Corner it means the same thing to us: the whole system, cleaned and certificated.

A clean in Curteis' Corner covers the canopy, plenum, filters, ductwork, risers and fan, and the discharge where it can be reached.

Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, where grease settles in the flat sections. We agree access and timings in advance.

The sign-off is always in writing: a dated report with photos of the work, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

How the visit works

There are three stages on the day: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, while signing off means the written report and photos. The middle part takes longest, and that takes a single shift for most kitchens, with long duct runs and tall risers needing more time. Somewhere like Curteis' Corner, lanes, gates and parking are worth mentioning in advance.

  1. First the diagnosis: a survey of the whole system and its access points.
  2. We record grease levels at set points, then fix the price.
  3. After the kitchen closes, we sheet the area and set up to contain grease and water.
  4. Heavy deposits are scraped by hand and the system degreased to TR19® Grease.
  5. Then the clean bill of health: readings, a TR19 certificate and a photo report with the next date.

Advice

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you cannot see still need a specialist at the right interval.

Part by part

Extract fan and discharge

The discharge is where air leaves the building, and grease can collect there too. We clean it where it can be safely reached, and any limits are recorded.

Restaurant and pub kitchens

Busy restaurant and pub kitchens often cook for long hours, frying and grilling, so their cleaning interval is often 3 or 6 months under BESA guidance. Cleans are done after close, overnight or before opening.

Looking after it afterwards

Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it helps at the next visit:

  • Clean the grease filters regularly between TR19 cleans
  • Refit filters properly after cleaning
  • Run the extract fan throughout cooking
  • Clean grease off the canopy surfaces regularly

The certificate records when the clean was done, where and by whom. File it with the fire risk assessment and the maintenance log so it’s ready when anyone asks to see it.

Keep the outside of the canopy wiped and any grease cups emptied. It will not replace a TR19 clean, but it slows what reaches the duct.

FAQs for Curteis' Corner

Who is the fire and rescue service for Curteis' Corner?

Curteis' Corner is in the area of Kent Fire and Rescue Service. TR19® is not law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.

Will you come out to Curteis' Corner?

Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Curteis' Corner included. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.

Do I have to clean my extract to TR19 by law?

TR19® itself isn’t law. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and TR19 is the benchmark used to show extract grease is under control.

Which kinds of sites do you work on?

We work for restaurants, pubs, hotels, schools, colleges, hospitals, care homes, offices and shops, as well as food production and leisure sites.

How do you protect the area?

With sheeting and covers, before anything else happens. The work is kept contained and clean down when we finish.

What happens if you cannot reach some of it?

They’re marked on the report. In ductwork, new access panels are often the answer, and we can fit those.

Can you quote from pictures?

Yes, if we can see what we need. Otherwise, we book a survey at a time that suits the site, and the quote follows that.

Can one contract cover all our sites?

Yes. One number covers all your sites in our area, with visits on a regular schedule.

When it’s something else

We won’t sell you work that does not address the problem, so here are the limits:

  • A duct that is holed or coming apart
  • A fan motor that has burnt out
  • Faulty fire dampers in the duct

If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we will say what we think.

What the work covers

  • Discharge points
  • Canopies and hoods
  • Horizontal duct runs
  • Plenums and filters
  • Vertical risers
  • Extract fans

What we’re called out for in Curteis' Corner

Cooking fat leaves the pan as a fine vapour. As the air cools on its way through the duct, the fat condenses and sticks, and the layer grows a little with every meal cooked. The grease filters stop some, never all of it.

It’s time to book a visit if you see:

  • A system with no record of a TR19 clean
  • Ductwork thick with old, hardened grease
  • A kitchen taken over without any extract records
  • Proof of cleaning requested by an insurer

Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Parish Church of All Saints, or anywhere in Curteis' Corner, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.

What to look for in a quote

  • Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
  • Whether VAT is included
  • What records you’ll receive afterwards
  • Whether they’re fully insured

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We’re happy to deal with either side, and the report can go to both.

We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements and we’ll come back with a fixed quote.
