FAQs for Letchworth

Which council inspects kitchens in Letchworth?

In Letchworth, it’s North Hertfordshire council that carries out food hygiene inspections. An officer may look behind equipment and at drains, so it pays to have the deep clean booked before those areas build up.

Can you work in school kitchens in Letchworth during the holidays?

Yes, holiday work suits schools best. The FSA’s register shows about 18 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of Letchworth. Send us your term dates when you phone us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email, and we will fit the work in.

Which sectors do you work in?

Restaurants and pubs, hotels, schools and colleges, hospitals and care homes, offices and retail, plus food production and leisure sites.

Does the report say when we need you again?

Yes. The report recommends when the next visit should be, based on use and what we found.

Can you clear our blocked drains as well?

It depends where the blockage is. A full trap is a common cause, and cleaning it can help, but blockages further along need a drainage contractor.

How much notice should we give?

The more notice, the better, particularly for night and weekend visits. We normally quote within one working day, and emergencies are covered by our 24/7 line.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Plans on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycle are available, depending on what the system needs.

What do you do to protect the area?

With sheeting and covers, before anything else happens. The work is kept contained and clean down when we finish.

Grease trap cleaning in Letchworth, done properly

Kitchens in Letchworth use us for grease trap cleaning, from small under-sink units to inline traps and interceptors. Visits are booked around your service so washing up is not interrupted. The work covers inline grease traps, restaurants and takeaways and school and care home kitchens, and people most often call us about a regular cleaning plan for the grease trap and washing-up water that won’t drain away.

Around a town like Letchworth, the kitchens we deep clean tend to be pubs, restaurants, takeaways and school or care home kitchens. All of them collect grease behind and under equipment.

Think of the report as the system’s health record: dated, with photos, and showing what was done. For TR19® Grease cleans, the certificate comes through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal and sits alongside the report.

What a clean won’t put right

We’ll always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what this work can’t put right:

  • Collapsed or damaged drains, which need a drainage contractor
  • A unit that can’t cope with the kitchen’s output
  • Plumbing leaks around the sink

If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we will say what we think before you book.

What we work on in Letchworth

  • Restaurants and takeaways
  • Inline grease traps
  • Under-sink grease traps
  • Pot wash sinks
  • School and care home kitchens
  • Kitchen waste pipes

What happens if it’s left?

Pouring hot water or chemicals down a slow drain is a common quick fix. That only moves the grease further down the pipe to set somewhere harder to reach. Emptying and cleaning the trap deals with the source. Grease, dust and wear all build up with time.

You will not find a price list here, because each job is priced on what it involves. For a fixed quote, call us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email, and we’ll talk you through it.

The process

The first job on site is protection: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. Then we make the system safe and start. The work on site takes a short visit for a small trap and longer for an inline unit or interceptor, and we clear up before we go. Before the visit, a few photos of the system and how to reach it help us plan the work in Letchworth.

  1. We agree a time when the sinks are not needed.
  2. We open the trap and look at its condition.
  3. We remove the grease layer and settled solids.
  4. We clean the baffles, inlet and outlet.
  5. The trap is closed, tested and the next clean discussed.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
  • Clear the space around the work

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but they do not reach the grease that builds up further in. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.

Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease need training, the right equipment and safe access. That’s our job.

What grease trap cleaning looks like in Letchworth

Food Standards Agency records list about 70 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 32 sandwich bars and takeaways in and around Letchworth, up to about a mile and a half out. Wherever they wash pans and plates, fat heads for the drain unless a trap catches it. Kitchens in Letchworth get their food hygiene inspections from North Hertfordshire council. Walls, floors, ceilings and equipment are all part of what they look at. A cleaning log that includes deep cleans and grease trap visits shows the work is planned.

If you run a kitchen near Letchworth Garden City station with long trading hours, grease builds up faster behind equipment and in the trap. Between visits

After the visit, a few habits help the work last:

  • Tell us when sinks start draining slowly
  • Fit sink strainers to catch food scraps
  • Scrape plates and pans into the bin before washing up
  • Mention any increase in cooking

The sinks are ready to use as soon as we’ve finished. Water is run through to check everything flows before we go.

Fat that escapes the trap hardens in the pipework. Clearing it then is a bigger job, so it’s far better to keep the trap clean.

Fixed quotes for grease trap cleaning in Letchworth

The quote reflects the site in front of us. We consider:

  • When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
  • What state the system is in
  • Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
  • Whether several sites go on one quote

Every site is different, so each one gets its own fixed quote. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all make a difference.

Asking for a quote

Many jobs can be priced from pictures and some basics. Useful things to send:

  • Problems your staff have spotted
  • Wide photos of the system and the area around it
  • Your last certificate, test record or report
  • The site address and the type of premises

Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work starts.

Common problems we fix in Letchworth

Food scraps go down the sink with the washing-up water. It settles in the trap as solids and fill it from below.

Common reasons sites call us are:

  • Foul odours from the grease trap
  • Grease setting in the kitchen pipework
  • A grease trap that hasn’t been emptied in a long time
  • Scheduled grease trap emptying

Hall kitchens near Church of St Paul or elsewhere in Letchworth may have older sinks and drains, so a grease trap check is worth adding to a deep clean.

What your quote should include

  • Whether a survey comes first
  • Whether the figure could change on the day
  • When the next visit should be, and why
  • Whether the quote shows VAT
