How we handle fire damper testing in Throcking

Fire dampers sit inside ductwork where it passes through a fire-resisting wall or floor. A fusible link holds the blade open until heat melts it, and the blade then drops to shut the duct. A drop test shows that the damper still does that when it matters, and we record the result for every damper we test. If you have corroded dampers in damp risers and plant rooms and fire dampers with no recent test record, we can put it right.

In a village or hamlet like Throcking, there may be only a few buildings with fire dampers. Each damper still needs testing at least once a year.

Each visit ends with a written report and photos, so there’s a dated record of the work. Kitchen extract cleaning to TR19® Grease is certificated through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Fire damper testing around Throcking

Fire safety in Throcking falls to Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic buildings, and that covers fire safety systems such as dampers. Throcking is about 31 miles from central London, well within the area we cover across London and the South East. Evening, overnight and weekend visits are all possible.

Around Throcking, as anywhere, each damper is released, checked, reset and recorded. If you manage a school site such as Freman College, any fire dampers can be tested in the holidays.

Throcking is about 6 miles north-east of Stevenage, in Hertfordshire. Sites in Throcking get the same service as everywhere we cover: diagnosis first, a fixed price, out-of-hours working where needed and a written report with photos. Throcking is one of 381 towns, villages and districts in Hertfordshire where we work for fire damper testing. You can also see our page for Chelmsford, roughly 28 miles from Throcking.

How the visit works

We turn up at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Equipment that has to be off is switched off and allowed to cool first, and the area around the work is covered and protected. The work itself takes a couple of hours for a few dampers, and a day or more across a big site. A quick note on how to find the site and where to park makes a visit to Throcking run smoothly.

  1. We gather what’s known about the dampers, from drawings, registers or past reports.
  2. We find every damper and open it up through the access panel.
  3. We release each fire damper blade and operate smoke dampers from their controls.
  4. Dampers that close fully are reset and left open.
  5. The results go into a report, with failed dampers and remedials listed.

Preparing for the visit

  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
  • Arrange a key holder or contact on site
  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms

Get a fixed quote

The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Add the site type and your opening hours, and we can price many jobs without a visit.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

A few tasks are always specialist work: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.

If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We’ll take a look and give you a fixed quote.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We cover South East England and London, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept to a regular schedule.

Whether it’s one building or many, the standard is the same: diagnosis, a fixed price, work booked around your hours and a written report with pictures.

How we price fire damper testing

The survey tells us what the work involves. We look at:

  • How many systems or sites are involved
  • One-off work versus a regular cycle
  • Travel, parking and unloading
  • The times the site is available

One small site or a whole estate, the quote is built the same way: the work involved, the access and the timing. You’ll have a fixed price before work begins.

What we need to know

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. With your enquiry, please include:

  • Your last certificate, test record or report
  • How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet

Here’s what helps us quote: where the site is, what it is and its opening hours, a few photos and any previous report or certificate. Then give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us.

Common questions in Throcking

Can the work in Throcking be done at night or at weekends?

Yes. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends. That way a site in Throcking does not have to lose a day’s trading. Your opening times are the first thing we ask for.

Is Throcking within the area you cover?

Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Throcking included. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.

Will we get a certificate for the dampers?

What you receive is a written report of each test, damper by damper. Failures are set out with the remedials we’d suggest.

How often does BESA say fire dampers should be tested?

BESA guidance calls for testing by a competent person at least once a year. Dampers should also be tested when they’re first installed.

Which accreditations do you hold?

Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.

What information do you need?

The site address, the type of premises and your opening hours, plus photos of the system and your last certificate or report if you have one.

Can you set up regular visits?

Yes. Plans on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycle are available, depending on what the system needs.

How long will damper testing take?

As a guide, it takes a few hours for a single floor, with bigger buildings phased over more than one visit. It comes down mainly to how many dampers there are and how easy they are to get to.

What the work involves, part by part

Fusible link fire dampers

Most fire dampers are held open by a fusible link. When the link reaches its set temperature it melts, and the blade drops to close the duct. Testing means dropping the blade, checking the full close and resetting it.

Ceiling voids and risers

Plant rooms and risers can be damp, which leads to corrosion. Signs of corrosion or water are recorded so the cause can be tackled.

Leave it or put it right?

Until a damper has been dropped, you cannot say whether it works. A test gives you a clear answer, and we can offer remedials for any that fail, and that is something you can plan around. If the system at a site near Throcking fails, there may be nowhere nearby to move to.

When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is all affect the cost. Each of those is built into the quote, and the price is fixed before any work starts.

Looking after it afterwards

Good habits slow the build-up between visits. A few tips:

  • Tell contractors where dampers are before they start work
  • Do not let anything obstruct a damper’s blade
  • Keep to at least yearly testing
  • Don’t let hatches get painted shut or boarded over

Share the results with your fire risk assessor so their assessment matches what was found. Outstanding faults should be dealt with, not left on file.

Where a damper sits in ductwork that collects dust or grease, keeping that ductwork clean helps. It makes sense to plan duct cleaning and damper testing together.
