Fire damper testing near Smeeth

Fire damper testing for kitchens and businesses in Smeeth

The idea behind drop testing is straightforward: the blade is released, checked for a full close and reset. We test dampers for sites in Smeeth and the rest of Kent, logging each one so the record builds year on year. If you have motorised smoke dampers due for testing and dampers flagged on a fire risk assessment, we can help, from hospitals and care homes, motorised smoke dampers and offices and schools onwards.

In a village or hamlet like Smeeth, there may be only a few buildings with fire dampers. Wherever there are dampers, each one needs testing at least annually.

Good records are part of the job. Each visit is written up with photos, listing what was done, anything we couldn’t reach and when the next visit is due. File it in your maintenance log so it’s to hand when an insurer or inspector asks.

What affects the quote in Smeeth

Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. The main factors:

  • When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
  • A single visit or a regular plan
  • Travel, parking and unloading
  • How many systems or sites are involved

When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is all affect the cost. Each of those is built into the quote, and the price is fixed before we start.

Helping us quote

To help us quote quickly, send us:

  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
  • The times we could work without disrupting the site
  • The postcode and the type of business
  • A few general shots of the system

Need a price for fire damper testing? Please call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email with a few details about the site. We will talk you through the work and send you a fixed quote before anything is booked.

We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare across Kent. Larger estates can be phased building by building to keep disruption down.

FAQs for Smeeth

Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Smeeth?

It’s Kent Fire and Rescue Service, which covers Smeeth. If a fire safety officer audits the building, they may ask for the latest damper test records.

Do you cover smaller places like Smeeth?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. The journey is planned ahead, so a few details about the route help.

How do you deal with dampers that cannot be reached?

We record it as not tested and explain why. Access panels can be installed so the damper can be tested next time.

Are you fully insured?

Yes. Duct Doctor is fully insured, and we can share the details when you need them.

Do you test smoke dampers as well?

Yes. We operate each smoke damper from its controls and check it opens and closes fully. If someone else looks after the controls, we plan the timing with you.

What do you do to protect the area?

We cover floors and nearby surfaces with sheeting before we start, and waste is contained as we go. At the end, the area is cleaned down.

What accreditations do you have?

We hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, alongside BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. The Vent Hygiene Elite scheme is run by BESCA and audited independently.

Will we get a certificate for the dampers?

You get a test report recording every damper we tested, with its location, its result and any faults. Keep it with your fire safety records.

The process

Your trading hours come first. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that is an evening, overnight or a weekend. When the team arrives, the work area is protected and the relevant equipment is switched off to cool, and the work takes a couple of hours for a few dampers, and a day or more across a big site. If you can send pictures, we can arrive in Smeeth knowing what to expect.

  1. Before the visit, we agree access, timings and any areas with restrictions.
  2. We open up ceilings and hatches and take off each access panel.
  3. We release each blade and check it shuts all the way.
  4. The damper is reset and its condition noted.
  5. Panels and tiles go back, and the results are written up.

Preparing for the visit

  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
  • Move anything stored near the system
  • Arrange a key holder or contact on site

There’s no standard price list, because every site is different. We look at your system first, from pictures or on a visit, and then send you a fixed quote. To start, call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.

Keeping the system healthy

Results last longer with the right care. We suggest:

  • Book the next test before the year runs out
  • Fix water leaks in plant rooms and risers promptly
  • Close off damper faults promptly
  • Add new dampers to the register as they’re fitted

Failed dampers are set out separately, each with the fault we found, and we can quote for remedials. After a repair, we retest the damper and update the record.

Clean ductwork means less dust and grease reaching the dampers. It makes sense to plan duct cleaning and damper testing together.

Fire damper testing around Smeeth

About 2.6 miles north-west of Smeeth is William Harvey Hospital, the nearest hospital. Where patients or residents may need help to leave a building, working dampers matter all the more. Smeeth is covered by Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and keeping dampers working is part of the responsible person’s duty.

A school like Smeeth Community Primary School can have any dampers tested over half-term without disturbing lessons. If you manage a historic building in the area (Westenhanger Castle is about 3.4 miles south-east), dampers fitted during conversions can be hard to reach and need recording.

Smeeth is about 5 miles east of Ashford, in Kent. Across the TN25 area, we can take on fire damper testing. Smeeth is one of 922 towns, villages and districts in Kent we cover for commercial clients. Maidstone is in our area too, about 21 miles from Smeeth.

We work across the TN25 postcode area for fire damper testing and the roads nearby. Whether your site is on Church Road, Caroland Close and Woolpack Hill or a nearby road, our technicians can take on the work. Nearby, we also carry out fire damper testing in Ridgeway (1 mile west), Brabourne Lees (1 mile north-east), Lilyvale (1 mile south-east), Bircholt Forstal (1 mile north-east) and Stone Hill (1 mile south-east). We also work in nearby towns such as Ashford (5 miles west), Canterbury (12 miles north-east), Dover (14 miles east), Folkestone (9 miles east), Faversham (14 miles north) and Hythe (6 miles south-east).

When something else is needed

Not every problem is solved by fire damper testing, and we’d rather say so up front. It will not put right:

  • Deciding where dampers should be fitted
  • Missing dampers that a designer needs to specify
  • Signing off a building’s overall fire safety

If you’re not sure, just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Hospitals and care homes
  • Motorised smoke dampers
  • Wall and floor dampers
  • Fusible link fire dampers
  • Riser dampers
  • Offices and schools

Part by part

Offices and retail

In offices and retail units, dampers tend to be hidden above working areas. Testing can be done outside opening hours to keep disruption down.

Ceiling voids and risers

Many dampers sit above suspended ceilings. Ceiling tiles are lifted for access and replaced afterwards.

When to call us in Smeeth

Over time, dust builds up on the blade, the runners and the spring. Where the duct carries grease or cooking vapour, grease coats them too, and either one can hold the blade part-open.

Keep an eye out for any of the following:

  • Fire dampers nobody can get to
  • Dampers flagged on a fire risk assessment
  • Smoke dampers that need testing through their controls
  • Dampers overdue for their annual drop test

The nearest hospital, William Harvey Hospital, is about 2.6 miles north-west; healthcare buildings like it are a reminder that dampers protect people who can’t move quickly.
