Need fire damper testing in Quarley?

Fire damper testing in Quarley

Plenty of buildings have dampers nobody has looked at since they were fitted. Ceilings get lowered, hatches get boarded over and paperwork goes astray. We find what we can, test what we can reach and list anything we cannot get to, so you can see exactly what still needs access. If you’re dealing with dampers hidden with no access panel or hatch and smoke dampers that need testing through their controls, we can put it right.

Testing in a small place like Quarley is planned around the journey and access, and every damper is drop tested, reset and recorded, the same as anywhere.

Good records are part of the job. You get a written report with photos after every visit, covering the work done, any areas we couldn’t access and a recommended next date. File it in your maintenance log so it’s to hand when an insurer or inspector asks.

The process

We work around your opening hours, not the other way round. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that’s an evening, overnight or a weekend. Once we’re in, the area is sheeted and anything that has to be off is turned off and cooled, and the work takes a couple of hours for a few dampers, and a day or more across a big site. We agree a date with you, plan the drive to Quarley and turn up when the site is quiet.

  1. First we check the schedule and the last set of results.
  2. Each damper is found and checked for access.
  3. Fire dampers are drop tested, and smoke dampers are tested through their controls.
  4. Passes are reset and any failures recorded with the reason.
  5. The report sets out the results, and we can quote to repair or replace failed dampers.

How to prepare

  • Tell us where we can park and unload
  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need

How to get a quote

The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

What happens if it’s left?

Testing every year builds a history for each damper so repeat problems show up early. A damper that was slow last year and sticks this year tells you something long before it fails outright. Systems in rural buildings are often out of sight and out of mind.

Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Problems in a system tend to grow, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you are not sure what’s needed, ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email for straight advice and a fixed quote.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

If you look after several sites, we can schedule visits across all of them on one quote. Every building has its own written report, so each one has its own record.

Landlords, managing agents and facilities managers book us, not only the businesses that use the systems. Where a system serves more than one tenant, such as a shared riser, it helps to agree who arranges the work, and we’re happy to quote for all of it.

Part by part

Offices and retail

Multi-let buildings may have dampers inside tenant areas. We agree access with the managing agent before the visit.

Fusible link fire dampers

The common fire damper uses a link that holds the blade open. When the link reaches its set temperature it melts, and the blade drops to close the duct. We release the blade, check it closes fully and reset it.

What affects the cost of fire damper testing

There’s no set price list, because sites vary so much. What we look at:

  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
  • The number of sites or systems
  • Parking and loading at the site

No two sites are the same, so we price each one individually. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all play a part.

What we need to know

Before you ask for a quote, gather:

  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
  • Any access panels or hatches you can see
  • Problems your staff have spotted
  • A few general shots of the system

For a fixed quote, call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. A few photos and your last certificate or report help a lot. You’ll normally have a quote within one working day.

Quarley’s nearest hospital, Andover War Memorial Hospital, is about 5.3 miles east. Where patients or residents may need help to leave a building, working dampers matter all the more. Staff cleaning versus specialist work

For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

A few tasks are always specialist work: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.

When it’s something else

To be straight with you, some problems need a different fix:

  • Ductwork crossing a fire wall with no damper fitted
  • Fire-stopping gaps around the duct where it passes through the wall
  • Control wiring problems outside the damper itself

If you are not sure, just phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking.

Common questions in Quarley

Do you cover smaller places like Quarley?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. The journey is planned ahead, so a few details about the route help.

Who is the fire and rescue service for Quarley?

That’s Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. If a fire safety officer audits the building, they may ask for the latest damper test records.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes. If something urgent happens, like a fan failing or damage after a fire, call our 24/7 line and we’ll talk you through the next steps.

What does TR19 mean?

It’s the industry benchmark for cleaning ventilation and kitchen extract systems, written by BESA. It covers how systems are inspected, cleaned and checked and expects a risk-based approach.

What happens if you can’t reach some of it?

We record them on the report, with a note of where it is, and we explain what access is needed, for example new access panels.

Who is responsible for fire damper testing?

It’s the responsible person, under the Fire Safety Order 2005. Annual testing by a competent person, with written records, is a practical way to show the duty is being met.

How often does BESA say fire dampers should be tested?

BESA guidance is that fire dampers are tested on completion of installation and at least annually after that. Spring-operated dampers need annual testing as a minimum.

How much time does a damper test visit need?

Expect it to take a morning or an afternoon for a small number of dampers, longer where there are many. How easily we can reach the dampers makes the most difference, and we’ll give you an idea when we quote.
