Fire damper testing for kitchens and businesses in Mead End

Not every damper relies on heat. A smoke damper is driven by a motor and responds to signals from its controls, so we test them by operating them through those controls and confirming every blade travels fully and comes back. If you are dealing with fire dampers nobody can get to and fire damper items raised by an assessor, we can put it right, from wall and floor dampers, offices and schools and fusible link fire dampers onwards.

Rural buildings that have been converted or extended can have ducts passing through fire-resisting walls, and the dampers in them are easily forgotten. The first visit starts by locating each damper.

The report is your system’s health record: a dated account with pictures of everything we did. Grease extract cleans are also certificated to TR19® Grease through the BESCA VHE portal and sits alongside the report.

How the visit works

At the end of the visit, someone from your team can look over the work with us. Anything we couldn’t reach or that needs attention is pointed out there and then, and it goes on the report too. The visit takes from an hour or two in a small building to several visits on a large estate. In a small place like Mead End, the journey is planned ahead and the visit arranged around the site’s hours.

  1. First we check the schedule and the last set of results.
  2. Each damper is found and checked for access.
  3. Fire dampers are drop tested, and smoke dampers are tested through their controls.
  4. Passes are reset and any failures recorded with the reason.
  5. We report the results and offer remedials on failed dampers.

Before we arrive

Advice

What fire damper testing can’t fix

An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what fire damper testing will not do:

  • Designing the building’s fire compartments
  • Fire-stopping gaps around the duct where it passes through the wall
  • Faults in the alarm or building controls that signal smoke dampers

If in doubt, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll say what we think.

Where we work

  • Motorised smoke dampers
  • Fusible link fire dampers
  • Hospitals and care homes
  • Offices and schools
  • Wall and floor dampers
  • Riser dampers

Looking after it afterwards

Simple habits between visits make a real difference. We recommend:

  • Keep ceiling hatches and duct panels easy to open
  • Report leaks or condensation near ductwork quickly
  • Keep damper test reports with the fire safety log
  • Tell contractors where dampers are before they start work

Dampers we couldn’t reach are listed with the reason, for example a missing panel or a covered hatch. Access panels can be fitted so those dampers are tested on the next visit.

Keeping to at least annual testing stops small faults turning into failed dampers. Faults caught early are easier to fix.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.

Part by part

Offices and retail

Offices and shops often have dampers above ceilings that are rarely opened. Testing can be done outside opening hours to keep disruption down.

Schools, hospitals and care homes

Where residents can’t easily get out, holding fire and smoke back matters even more. Regular damper testing supports that.

Mead End: your questions answered

Do you work in villages like Mead End?

Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Mead End included. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Mead End?

It’s Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, which covers Mead End. If a fire safety officer audits the building, they may ask for the latest damper test records.

What do you do to protect the area?

We cover floors and nearby surfaces with sheeting before any work starts, and anything we remove is contained. Before we leave, we tidy up and clean down.

What if a damper has no access panel?

We don’t leave it off the report; we note it as not reached. With an access panel fitted, it can be tested on a return visit.

Are you insured?

Yes, fully. We also hold CHAS and SafeContractor, for sites that check contractor safety.

What is TR19?

It’s BESA’s specification and the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to. It sets out inspection, cleaning and record keeping, and it takes a risk-based approach.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Regular plans can run on 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycles, to suit the system and how it’s used.

Can you look after several sites?

Yes. You deal with one contact for every site in our area, and visits can be set on a regular cycle.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.

Managing agents often deal with us directly. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements and we’ll come back with a fixed quote.

Fixed quotes for fire damper testing in Mead End

A fixed price needs a few facts first. We look at:

  • Whether several sites go on one quote
  • Site rules, permits and inductions
  • The condition of the system
  • The size of the system

Working hours, access and the scale of the site all affect the cost. Each of those is built into the quote and give you a fixed price before work begins.

What we need to know

We can often survey from photos. Try to include:

  • Any access panels or hatches you can see
  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
  • Wide photos of the system and the area around it
  • The site address and the type of premises

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and we can price many jobs without a visit.
