Fire damper inspection in Fulmer
Fire damper testing across Fulmer and nearby, timed so the site keeps working and finished with a written report and pictures.
- Dampers that cannot be reached without an access panel
- Corroded dampers in damp risers and plant rooms
- Motorised smoke dampers due for testing
Different parts, different methods
Ceiling voids and risers
Many dampers sit above suspended ceilings. We lift tiles where necessary and put them back as we found them.
Offices and retail
Multi-let buildings may have dampers inside tenant areas. Access to each area is planned with whoever manages the building.
Fire damper testing for kitchens and businesses in Fulmer
Ductwork can carry fire and smoke between compartments, and the damper is what stops it. A damper only does its job if the blade can drop fully. Regular drop testing is how that gets checked in each part of the building. We are often asked to deal with fire dampers that haven’t been tested for over a year and smoke dampers that need testing through their controls, across offices and schools, wall and floor dampers and motorised smoke dampers.
Somewhere as small as Fulmer, fire dampers are typically found in a school, a care home, a hotel or a converted building, wherever there is one. Each damper still needs testing at least once a year.
We’ve been trading since 2009, as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we are fully insured.

Honest limits
To be straight with you, there are a few things this work will not fix:
- Faults in the alarm or building controls that signal smoke dampers
- Fire risk assessments, which need a fire risk assessor
- Ductwork crossing a fire wall with no damper fitted
Not sure which it is? You can ring 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will tell you honestly before you book.
Parts of the system we cover
- Riser dampers
- Motorised smoke dampers
- Fusible link fire dampers
- Hospitals and care homes
- Wall and floor dampers
- Offices and schools
Aftercare tips
After the visit, a few habits help the work last:
- Fix water leaks in plant rooms and risers promptly
- Tell contractors where dampers are before they start work
- Update the register when ductwork changes
- Don’t let anything obstruct a damper’s blade
Failed dampers are set out separately, each with the fault we found, and we can quote for remedials. After a repair, we retest the damper and update the record.
The simplest way to avoid failures is to test on time, every year. Faults caught early are easier to fix.
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, next to our reports.
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that’s where we come in.
When to call us in Fulmer
Links and springs age like any other part. A link can be damaged, painted over or swapped for the wrong one, and a tired spring may not drive the blade home, and that only becomes clear during a drop test.
Signs it’s time to call us include:
- Dampers affected by leaks or condensation
- Dampers hidden with no access panel or hatch
- Dampers clogged with dust or grease
- Dampers overdue for their annual drop test
Hospitals such as Wexham Park Hospital, about 2.2 miles south, are a good example of buildings with dampers on many floors; if you manage a clinic, surgery or care home near Fulmer, the same annual testing applies.
Questions to ask before booking
- Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report
- Whether a survey comes first
- What’s included in the scope, part by part
- What insurance they carry

The process
Your staff do not need to do much on the day. Someone lets us in at the agreed time and shows us where everything is, and the rest is down to us. Before we leave, the area is tidied and the paperwork follows. Somewhere like Fulmer, lanes, gates and parking are worth mentioning in advance.
- We go through the damper schedule and any previous faults.
- We locate every damper and note any we can’t reach.
- Fire dampers are drop tested, and smoke dampers are tested through their controls.
- Passes are reset and any failures recorded with the reason.
- We report the results and offer remedials on failed dampers.
Preparing for the visit
- Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
- Agree a time when the area can be out of use
- Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down

Your questions about fire damper testing in Fulmer
Is Fulmer within the area you cover?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.
Which fire service covers Fulmer?
That’s Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service. Failed dampers on a report should be followed by a record of the repair, so the file shows the problem was closed out.
Who has the legal duty for fire safety?
The Fire Safety Order 2005 calls them the responsible person: normally the employer or whoever controls the premises. Landlords, facilities managers and managing agents can also hold responsibility.
How much notice do you need?
Book as early as you can for planned work, especially if the next clean or test is due soon. Emergencies are different, because our line is open 24/7.
Are you accredited?
We hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. The Vent Hygiene Elite scheme is run by BESCA and audited independently.
What about areas you cannot get to?
Anything we cannot reach goes on the report, with a note of where it is, and we tell you what would make it reachable, such as extra access panels in ductwork.
Can you test motorised smoke dampers?
Yes, as well as drop testing fire dampers. The results go into the same report, so you have one record.
What do you do to protect the area?
By covering it before any work starts. The work is kept contained and leave the area clean.
