Fire and smoke damper testing in Danbury
Looking for fire damper testing in Danbury? We survey first, send you a fixed quote and work around your opening hours, finishing with a written report and photos.
- Fire dampers with no recent test record
- Dampers that can’t be reached without an access panel
- Smoke dampers that need testing through their controls
Keeping the system healthy
Once we’ve finished, these simple steps help:
- Do not let hatches get painted shut or boarded over
- Add new dampers to the register as they’re fitted
- Get remedials done soon after a failed test
- Keep to at least yearly testing
If we couldn’t get to a damper, the report says so and why, such as no access panel or a blocked hatch. Access panels can be fitted so those dampers are tested on the next visit.
A simple register of every damper helps a great deal: location, type, last test date and result. It means nothing gets forgotten when staff or contractors change.
Fire damper testing for kitchens and businesses in Danbury
A drop test is simple in principle: the blade is released, checked for a full close and reset. We test dampers for sites in Danbury and the rest of Essex, logging each one so the record builds year on year. The work covers riser dampers, fusible link fire dampers and hospitals and care homes, and the jobs we see most are dampers flagged on a fire risk assessment and fire dampers with no recent test record.
In smaller places like Danbury, dampers are often in the ductwork serving kitchens, plant rooms and escape routes. Testing is planned around residents, pupils or guests.
Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a written report, dated and illustrated with photos, plus a certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal when the work is a TR19® Grease clean. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

What affects the cost of fire damper testing
We don’t publish a price list, because sites vary so much. What we look at:
- Where the site is and how we reach it
- Site rules, permits and inductions
- What state the system is in
- How easy every part is to reach
You won’t find a price list here, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. For a fixed quote, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form, and we will talk you through it.
Asking for a quote
The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. With your enquiry, please include:
- Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
- The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
- The times we could work without disrupting the site
- Wide pictures of the system and the area around it
Here’s what helps us quote: where the site is, what it is and its opening hours, pictures of the system and the last certificate or report, if there is one. Once you have those, ring 0345 646 2711, or send details by email.
Danbury: your questions answered
Can you test school fire dampers in Danbury out of term?
Yes. Half-terms and the summer break are the natural time for school work. Around Danbury, the Food Standards Agency lists about 6 schools and colleges with registered kitchens within a mile and a half or so. You can call us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos with the dates the site is empty.
Do you work overnight in Danbury?
Yes, out-of-hours work is a big part of what we do. It means the site in Danbury keeps running as normal. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote.
Do you work with multi-site operators?
Yes. Tell us the addresses and what each needs and you’ll get one fixed quote.
Does the law say we must follow TR19?
No, not in itself. Insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to TR19® as the benchmark, and many insurers ask for proof of cleaning to it. The law behind it is the Fire Safety Order 2005, which applies in England and Wales.
Are you accredited?
We hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, alongside BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. The Vent Hygiene Elite scheme is run by BESCA and audited independently.
What does TR19 mean?
A BESA specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It is not legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.
Will we have to shut during the visit?
Not typically. We work when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends, so the site can carry on as normal.
Whose job is it to make sure fire dampers are tested?
The responsible person under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, who might be the employer, owner, landlord, facilities manager or managing agent. Keeping fire safety systems working, dampers included, is part of their duty.
The process
Night work is normal for us. Evenings, nights and weekends are when much of our work happens, so a kitchen or building can carry on as usual the next day. The visit itself takes from an hour or two in a small building to several visits on a large estate. Visits to a place like Danbury are planned ahead, so we arrive with what the survey says the job needs.
- We start with whatever records exist: registers, drawings or old reports.
- Each damper is located and reached through its access panel.
- Every fire damper is dropped, and every smoke damper is tested through its controls.
- Dampers that close fully are reset and left open.
- You get a report listing each damper, its result and any remedials needed.
Getting ready for the visit
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
- Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
- Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend
Getting a quote
To get a fixed quote, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us with the site type, your trading hours and a short description of the system. A few photos and your last certificate or report help a lot. You’ll usually have a quote within one working day.
Advice
Fire dampers in Danbury buildings
The FSA’s food hygiene register lists about 6 schools, colleges and universities and about 4 care, childcare and hospital premises with registered kitchens or food service in Danbury and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Larger buildings like these are often divided into fire compartments, with dampers where ducts pass between them. Danbury’s nearest hospital, Baddow Hospital, is about 3.5 miles west. A hospital is the kind of building where dampers sit on every floor, and clinics, surgeries and care homes need the same annual testing for any they have. Danbury sits within the area of Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces and other non-domestic buildings, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.
Historic buildings that have had ventilation added later can hide dampers in awkward places; Danbury Place, about 1.3 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the area around Danbury. Site managers at schools such as Danbury Park Community Primary School typically find the summer break the easiest time for ceiling work like damper testing. Hospitals such as Baddow Hospital, about 3.5 miles west, are a good example of buildings with dampers on many floors; if you manage a clinic, surgery or care home near Danbury, the same annual testing applies.
Danbury is about 4 miles west of Maldon, in Essex. Danbury gets the same approach as every site we work on: a survey first, a fixed quote, work timed around your hours and a report with photos. Our area takes in 644 places across Essex, large and small.

Ceiling voids and risers
Many dampers sit above suspended ceilings. We lift tiles where necessary and put them back as we found them.
Offices and retail
Fit-outs and tenant changes are hard on dampers. Testing after a fit-out shows whether anything was disturbed.
Honest limits
Not every problem is solved by fire damper testing, and we’d rather say so up front. It doesn’t solve:
- Dampers that were never installed where they’re needed
- Fire risk assessments, which need a fire risk assessor
- Holes around ductwork in fire-resisting walls
If in doubt, call 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we’ll say what we think.
Where we work
- Fusible link fire dampers
- Motorised smoke dampers
- Riser dampers
- Offices and schools
- Hospitals and care homes
- Wall and floor dampers
What happens if it’s left?
A damper that’s stuck open gives fire and smoke a route straight through a fire-resisting wall. The rest of the compartment can be built perfectly and still be bypassed by the duct. Testing now is how you find out before it matters. A site near Danbury that has to close at short notice is hard to cover for.
What you pay depends on the size of the system, what state it’s in and access to every part of it. We give you a fixed price before any work starts, so there are no surprises.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?
Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.
Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease need training, the right equipment and safe access. Leave those to us.
