Fire damper testing for sites in Cheriton

What affects the quote in Cheriton

Every site gets its own quote. These are the things that affect it:

  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
  • Whether several sites go on one quote
  • One-off work versus a regular cycle
  • The condition we find in the survey

Working hours, access and the scale of the site all affect the cost. Each of those is built into the quote, and the price is fixed before we start.

What we need to know

A few details help us quote accurately. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • Any previous report or certificate
  • A few general shots of the system
  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
  • Your opening hours and when the area is out of use

Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work starts.

Fire damper testing in Cheriton, done properly

In a fire, ductwork can act as a shortcut for flame and smoke from one part of a building to the next. That depends entirely on the blade closing all the way. Regular drop testing is how that gets checked in each part of the building. The work covers motorised smoke dampers, hospitals and care homes and wall and floor dampers, and common reasons people get in touch are dampers that can’t be reached without an access panel and motorised smoke dampers due for testing.

Somewhere as small as Cheriton, fire dampers are normally found in a school, a care home, a hotel or a converted building, wherever there is one. Each damper still needs testing at least once a year.

We have been trading since 2009, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.

How the visit works

Before we leave, we walk the area with whoever is on site. Anything we couldn’t reach or that needs attention is pointed out there and then, and it goes on the report too. The visit takes a morning or an afternoon for a small number of dampers, longer where there are many. We agree a date with you, plan the drive to Cheriton and turn up when the site is quiet.

  1. Before the visit, we agree access, timings and any areas with restrictions.
  2. Ceiling tiles and hatches are opened and each damper’s access panel removed.
  3. The blade is released and watched to make sure it closes fully.
  4. The damper is reset and its condition noted.
  5. We close everything up and send the results in a report.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
  • Tell us where we can park and unload
  • Find the previous report, if there is one

Why deal with it now?

A sticking blade caught on an annual test can be a small repair. Years of corrosion and dirt can mean the whole damper needs replacing instead. It’s worth booking a check, because nobody sees inside a duct day to day.

Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Call for a fixed quote and we’ll go through it with you.

Looking after it afterwards

A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. We recommend:

  • Warn anyone working in ceiling voids about the dampers
  • Store test records alongside the fire risk assessment
  • Keep an eye out for damp around dampers
  • Add new dampers to the register as they’re fitted

Make sure trades working in ceilings and risers know where the dampers sit, and ask them not to run cables through or wedge them. Anything they disturb should be checked again.

Good access is half the battle. Where there’s no hatch, an access panel makes testing possible ahead of the next visit.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Some jobs should never be done in-house: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings call for the right kit, training and safe access. That is our job.

Logging matters as much as cleaning. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, next to our reports.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.

Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, the lease normally sets out who maintains what. We can quote either party and send the paperwork to whoever needs it.

Your questions about fire damper testing in Cheriton

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Cheriton?

It’s Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, which covers Cheriton. Keep each damper test report with the fire risk assessment and the building’s log book, ready to show.

Do you work at weekends in Cheriton?

What do you do with what you remove?

Anything we remove is contained as we work and taken away with us, including grease, debris and dirty water. We do not leave it behind.

Is TR19 cleaning required by law?

No, not in itself. Insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to TR19® as the benchmark, and many insurers ask for proof of cleaning to it. The legal duty sits in the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which applies in England and Wales.

What accreditations do you have?

It sits with the building’s responsible person. Depending on the building, that can be the employer, owner, landlord or whoever manages it. Our part is the testing and the records that show it’s been done.

What types of premises do you cover?

Any site with a kitchen or a ventilation system to look after, from a single café to a large school. We work with hotels, schools, care homes, offices, retail and leisure sites.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes, day and night, every day of the year. Our office is open from 8am to 6pm on weekdays, and the emergency line covers the rest.

Do you need fire damper testing in Cheriton?

Dampers are hidden above ceilings, inside risers and behind boxing. Without an access panel nearby, they’re easy to forget, and anything nobody can get to goes untested.

Common reasons sites call us are:

  • Dampers that stick or will not close fully
  • Dirty dampers that may not close
  • Missing or out-of-date damper records
  • Dampers hidden with no access panel or hatch

A school like Cheriton Primary School can have any dampers tested over half-term without disturbing lessons.
