Fire damper testing near Capel

Fire damper testing in Capel

Some dampers haven’t been tested since the day they went in. Ceilings have gone up, access panels have been covered or lost, and the records have gone missing. We find what we can, test what we can reach and list anything we can’t get to, so you know where the gaps are. If you have dampers that can’t be reached without an access panel and motorised smoke dampers due for testing, we can put it right.

In rural areas, conversions, country hotels and care homes can have ductwork crossing fire-resisting walls, and the dampers in them are easily forgotten. A first test normally starts with finding them all.

We’ve been trading since 2009, as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.

What your team can do, and what needs us

Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, alongside our reports.

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, and that is where we come in.

What the work involves, part by part

Access panels

If we can’t reach a damper, it goes on the report as inaccessible. We can fit access panels so it’s tested next time.

Fusible link fire dampers

A damaged or painted link can stop a damper doing its job. We check its condition during the test and any problems go on the report.

What we do, step by step

We turn up at the time agreed with you, which is often after service, overnight or at a weekend. Equipment that has to be off is switched off and allowed to cool first, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. On site, it takes a few hours for a single floor, with bigger buildings phased over more than one visit. Seeing the system in pictures first means the trip to Capel can be planned properly.

  1. First we check the schedule and the last set of results.
  2. We locate every damper and note any we cannot reach.
  3. Fire dampers are drop tested, and smoke dampers are tested through their controls.
  4. Dampers that pass are reset, and failures are logged with what we found.
  5. We report the results and offer remedials on failed dampers.

Looking after it afterwards

Think of this as the after-treatment advice, short and simple:

  • Keep an eye out for damp around dampers
  • Keep the damper register up to date after any building work
  • Get remedials done soon after a failed test
  • Store test records alongside the fire risk assessment

After testing, you get a report listing each of the fire and smoke dampers we tested, with where it is and whether it passed. Keep it with the building’s fire safety records so it’s ready when your assessor or insurer asks.

The simplest way to avoid failures is to test on time, every year. A blade that is just starting to stick is easier to deal with than a seized one.

Capel questions

Can fire dampers in schools around Capel be tested in the holidays?

Yes, holiday work suits schools best. Food Standards Agency records list about 2 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of Capel. Send us your term dates when you ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email, and we’ll fit the work in.

Do you work overnight in Capel?

Yes, out-of-hours work is a big part of what we do. The site is handed back ready to open. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote.

Do we lose a day’s trading?

Not usually. We work when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends, so the site can carry on as normal.

Are you fully insured?

Yes, fully. We also hold CHAS and SafeContractor for clients who vet their contractors.

What does TR19 mean?

TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes. We always survey first, from your photos and details, or with a visit where necessary. A fixed quote follows.

Do you test smoke dampers as well?

Yes. We operate each smoke damper from its controls and check it opens and closes fully. Where a controls contractor needs to be involved, we arrange it with you.

Are you accredited?

Our accreditations are CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. The Vent Hygiene Elite scheme is run by BESCA and audited independently.

Fixed quotes for fire damper testing in Capel

A fixed price needs a few facts first. We check:

  • The size of the system
  • Travel, parking and unloading
  • The times the site is available
  • One-off work versus a regular cycle

When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is all affect the cost. Each of those is built into the quote, and the price is fixed before work begins.

Asking for a quote

A few details help us quote accurately. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
  • Wide photos of the system and the area around it
  • Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow

For a fixed quote, call 0345 646 2711, or email photos and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. Photos and the last report, if you have one, make the quote quicker. You will usually have a quote within one working day.

Honest limits

Fire damper testing can’t fix everything, and we’ll tell you before work begins. It will not put right:

  • Control wiring problems outside the damper itself
  • Sign-off of the whole building’s fire safety
  • Fire risk assessments, which need a fire risk assessor

If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we will say what we think.

What the work covers

  • Riser dampers
  • Hospitals and care homes
  • Motorised smoke dampers
  • Fusible link fire dampers
  • Wall and floor dampers
  • Offices and schools

Common problems we fix in Capel

Fusible links and springs do not last for ever. Damaged or painted links and weak springs mean the blade may stop short, which only shows up when the damper is dropped.

These are the problems we see most often:

  • Rusted damper blades and springs
  • Dust or grease build-up on damper blades
  • Fire dampers that haven’t been tested for over a year
  • Blades that jam part-way when released

A school like Capel Primary School can have any dampers tested over half-term without disturbing lessons.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Whether the quote is based on a survey or photos
  • What’s included in the scope, part by part
  • Whether a written report and photos are included
  • Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
