Extract fan cleaning across Sway

Extract fan cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Sway

A fan never collects grease in a neat, even layer. Uneven build-up unbalances the impeller, leading to vibration, noise and strain on the motor and bearings. Cleaning the impeller and housing puts that right. If you have a fan coated in grease inside its housing and weak extraction at the canopy, we can put it right.

Around a smaller place like Sway, kitchen extracts tend to belong to pubs, cafés, takeaways and school or care home kitchens. A kitchen that cooks fewer hours still builds up grease, so cleaning is planned around how much it cooks and what the readings show.

The paperwork matters as much as the work. Each visit is written up with photos, listing what was done, anything we couldn’t reach and when the next visit is due. File it in your maintenance log so it’s ready for an insurer, fire officer or EHO.

When something else is needed

Extract fan cleaning can’t fix everything, and we will tell you before any work starts. It does not solve:

  • A dirty duct upstream of the fan
  • An impeller that is bent or split
  • Wiring faults to the fan

Not sure which it is? You can ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.

Where we work

  • Centrifugal fans
  • Roof-mounted fans
  • Fan housings
  • Discharge points
  • Axial fans
  • In-line fans

Leave it or put it right?

A fan that fails mid-service can stop a kitchen cooking. Many fan problems start with grease, so cleaning the fan helps keep it working. If it does fail, our 24/7 emergency line is there. Systems on quieter sites still build up dirt and wear, just more slowly.

We do not list prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. For a fixed quote, call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line, and we will explain what it covers.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Some jobs should never be done in-house: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.

If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We can diagnose it and quote.

The process

When we arrive, we check the system against the survey or the pictures you sent. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. From there, it takes a couple of hours per fan, depending on its size and the build-up. In a place like Sway, we fit the visit around your hours.

  1. We locate the fan and plan how to reach and isolate it.
  2. It’s isolated so it cannot run while we work.
  3. We scrape the heavy grease from the blades and housing.
  4. Blades, housing and surrounds are degreased with care around the electrics.
  5. It’s closed up, run, checked and photographed for the report.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
  • Clear loose items from the work area

Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in photos, get a survey first. Either way, you get a fixed price before work begins.

Advice

Sway questions

Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Sway?

Fire safety enforcement in Sway is handled by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Records of extract cleaning are a sensible thing to have ready if a fire safety officer carries out an audit.

Can you come to Sway after we close?

Yes, evening, overnight and weekend work is normal for us. The work in Sway can fit around your hours. Let us know the hours you are closed and we will book within them.

Are you insured?

Yes. Duct Doctor is fully insured, and we can share the details when you need them.

What should I send you?

Some photos and a quick description of the system, with the address and opening hours. We’ll ask for anything else we need.

How much notice do you need?

Earlier is better, particularly for night and weekend visits. Quotes typically come back within one working day, and emergencies are covered by our 24/7 line.

What if the fan needs more than a clean?

Fan repair and replacement is part of what we do. If cleaning shows a worn motor, bearings or impeller, we will tell you and quote for the repair.

Do you need to turn the fan off to clean it?

The fan must be isolated, for safety. We clean out of hours, in the evening, overnight or at weekends, so cooking isn’t affected.

What does extract fan cleaning cost?

Every site is different, so each gets its own fixed quote. To get one, call us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and tell us about the site and its opening hours.

Extract fan cleaning in Sway: the local picture

The FSA’s food hygiene register includes about 3 pubs and bars and about 5 hotels and guest houses in Sway and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Any of them serving cooked food has an extract to keep clean, from canopy to discharge. The fire and rescue service for Sway is Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract. Food hygiene inspections in Sway are the job of New Forest council’s environmental health team. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after.

For schools such as St Luke's Church of England Primary School, kitchen extract cleaning is usually booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed. Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Lymington New Forest Hospital (about 2.9 miles south-east), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands. A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near St Luke's Church or elsewhere in Sway, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.

Sway is about 3 miles north-west of Lymington, in Hampshire. Whether your site is in the middle of Sway or further out, we cover extract fan cleaning for every kind of premises, from a single unit to a large public building. Sway is one of 683 towns, villages and districts in Hampshire where we work for commercial clients. Southampton is in our area too, about 13 miles from Sway.

Looking after it afterwards

Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it helps at the next visit:

  • Keep each photo report with the maintenance log
  • Notice when the fan starts to sound different
  • Keep the grease filters clean and in place
  • Note any drop in extraction at the canopy

The area around the fan is left clean, with waste grease removed. Wherever the fan is, the area around it is cleaned down.

Keep the route to the fan clear. Clear access means it’s never left out of a clean, whether it’s on a roof, in a ceiling or on a wall.

What affects the cost of extract fan cleaning

Before we fix a price, we need to know a few things. We check:

  • A single visit or a regular plan
  • The times the site is available
  • What state the system is in
  • Whether we need access equipment or extra panels

Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Call for a fixed quote and we’ll explain each part.

Helping us quote

There’s no need for technical detail. It helps if you can send:

  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
  • The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Add the site type and your opening hours, and we can price many jobs without a visit.

How the job changes from site to site

Inline duct fans

Inline fans can be in tight spaces, so we plan how to reach and clean them. Anything out of reach is recorded.

Fan housings and motors

Inside the casing, grease is thrown onto the walls. We clean it along with the blades.
