Extract fan cleaning for sites in Poyle

About our extract fan cleaning in Poyle

Grease on a fan isn’t spread evenly. Heavier deposits on some blades throw the impeller off balance, leading to vibration, noise and strain on the motor and bearings. A thorough clean removes the cause. The work covers discharge points, centrifugal fans and fan housings, and people most often call us about a motor area thick with grease and a fan left out of previous cleans.

Somewhere as small as Poyle, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease, whatever the size of the place.

We’re CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we’re fully insured. On top of that, we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

Logging matters as much as cleaning. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, next to our reports.

Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Each visit ends with a dated report and photos, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.

Between visits

Good habits slow the build-up between visits. Our tips:

  • Do not store items in front of the fan’s access point
  • Tell us if the extract feels weaker
  • Report grease escaping from the fan
  • Never cook with a filter missing

File the photo report with your other extract records. It gives a dated record of the fan’s condition, which helps if anything changes later.

Do not run the kitchen with the extract off. Air that keeps moving carries vapour out rather than letting it settle, so keeping it running helps keep it clean.

Common problems we fix in Poyle

Fans that are hard to reach are often the ones that get missed. If it wasn’t included in past cleans, it may hold years of grease, and the report will show it.

These are the problems we see most often:

  • A motor area thick with grease
  • A fan that hums, whines or rumbles
  • Weak extraction at the canopy
  • A fan shaking on its mounts

Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Church of St Thomas, or anywhere in Poyle, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.

Questions to ask before booking

Poyle: your questions answered

Which council inspects kitchens in Poyle?

Kitchens in Poyle are inspected by Slough council’s environmental health officers. It helps to keep the extract cleaning records with your food safety paperwork, so they’re ready if asked for.

Do you work at weekends in Poyle?

Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. The work in Poyle can fit around your hours. Your opening times are the first thing we ask for.

How long is a fan clean?

That depends on the fan’s size, its position and how much grease there is. Typically it takes an hour or two for most single fans.

What’s the cleaning interval for an extract fan?

It’s cleaned with the whole extract, from every 3 months for 12 to 16 hours of cooking a day to every 12 months for 2 to 6 hours. Grease readings and the fan’s condition can show it needs more.

Do you work in Poyle?

Yes. We work across Greater London, Surrey, Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex, and that includes Poyle.

Do we need to close while you work?

Not normally. Visits are timed for when the area is closed, such as overnight or at a weekend, so the site can carry on as normal.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes. There’s a 24/7 emergency line for anything that cannot wait until a planned visit. Ring any time and tell us what’s happened.

Is it safe to clean the fan while the kitchen is open?

We always isolate the fan first, so it can’t start while we work. That means the extract is off, so we clean while the kitchen is closed.

When it’s something else

Before booking, it helps to know what’s not included:

  • A cracked or broken impeller (it needs replacing)
  • A fan that is too small for the system (a design question)
  • Grease in the canopy and ductwork

If in doubt, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we’ll say what we think before booking.

Where we work

  • In-line fans
  • Fan housings
  • Centrifugal fans
  • Roof-mounted fans
  • Axial fans
  • Discharge points

The process

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, which is often after service, overnight or at a weekend. Equipment that has to be off is switched off and allowed to cool first, and the area around the work is covered and protected. On site, it takes a couple of hours per fan, depending on its size and the build-up. Seeing the system in pictures first means the trip to Poyle can be planned properly.

  1. The fan is found and its type, access and isolation checked.
  2. We isolate the power before opening the housing.
  3. We scrape the heavy grease from the blades and housing.
  4. Blades, housing and surrounds are degreased with care around the electrics.
  5. It’s closed up, run, checked and photographed for the report.

Preparing for the visit

  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
  • Find the previous report, if there is one
  • Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
