Mill Green: your questions answered

Can you get to a site in Mill Green?

Yes, Mill Green is part of our area, however small the site. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.

Which environmental health team covers Mill Green?

In Mill Green, it’s Brentwood council that carries out food hygiene inspections. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.

Who is the responsible person?

It depends on the building. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, facilities manager or managing agent.

What makes a kitchen extract fan vibrate?

Uneven grease on the impeller often causes it. We clean the fan and tell you if anything else, like worn bearings, is to blame.

What do you do with what you remove?

We contain it and take it with us. Grease, debris and waste water are collected as the work goes on rather than letting it spread.

What does TR19 mean?

BESA’s ventilation hygiene specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark.

Is the fan included in a TR19 clean?

Yes, the fan is part of a full TR19® Grease clean. We clean it alongside the canopy, ductwork and discharge.

Can you look after several sites?

Yes. One number covers all your sites in our area, with visits on a regular schedule.

Extract fan cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Mill Green

Every TR19® Grease clean includes the extract fan, but some fans need cleaning between full cleans, for example when it’s noisy or vibrating. A fan-only clean is recorded as exactly that. Typical jobs include grease around the motor and its mounts and a noisy fan that has got louder over time, on discharge points, fan housings and in-line fans.

Work in a small place like Mill Green starts with a call to agree access and timings, and the clean covers the whole system, as it would anywhere: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.

Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

What the work involves, part by part

Impellers and blades

A clean impeller shows any damage: chips, distortion or wear. We note any concerns.

Inline duct fans

Hidden in a ceiling void, an inline fan is easily missed. The survey makes sure it’s part of the clean.

Between visits

So the system stays in good health:

  • Check the report shows the fan was cleaned
  • Report rattles or humming early
  • Report grease escaping from the fan
  • Keep records of every fan clean

File the photo report with your other extract records. It shows the fan’s condition at the time of the clean, which helps if anything changes later.

Listen to the fan. Rattles, hums or shaking can be early signs of build-up or wear, and catching it early keeps it a cleaning job.

Honest limits

Extract fan cleaning can’t fix everything, and we’ll tell you before we start. It will not put right:

  • A failed motor or worn bearings (that needs a fan repair or replacement)
  • Grease in the canopy and ductwork
  • A cracked or broken impeller (it needs replacing)

If in doubt, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we will say what we think.

Common problems we fix in Mill Green

A fan on a roof or hidden in a ceiling void is easy to forget. If it wasn’t included in past cleans, it may hold years of grease, and the report will show it.

Common reasons sites call us include:

  • A fan left out of previous cleans
  • Grease stains around the discharge
  • A noisy fan that has got louder over time
  • A fan shaking on its mounts

School kitchens, at schools like Ingatestone Infant School for example, are usually cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.

What your quote should include

  • Whether the figure could change on the day
  • Proof of insurance
  • When they can work, and whether that is outside your opening hours
  • Whether they recommend a next date

Questions to ask before booking

What happens if it’s left?

Grease on the fan is grease in the system. TR19® Grease covers the whole extract, fan included, and insurers asking for TR19 cleaning expect the full system. Out of sight is the usual reason a rural system goes too long without attention.

One small site or a whole estate, we price it on the same basis: the work involved, the access and the timing. You’ll have a fixed price before work begins.

How it works

Before we leave, we walk the area with whoever is on site. We point out anything that couldn’t be reached or needs a follow-up, and the same goes into the written report. The visit takes a couple of hours per fan, depending on its size and the build-up. Seeing the system in photos first means the trip to Mill Green can be planned properly.

  1. We find the fan and check how it’s reached and how it’s isolated.
  2. With the fan isolated, the housing is opened.
  3. The impeller and the housing around it are scraped clean.
  4. We degrease the fan and housing, taking care around the motor.
  5. The fan is put back into service, checked and photographed.

How to prepare

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, which is where we come in.

Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.
